For the most reliable result, select the microphone at three levels: Windows Sound settings, Steam Voice settings, and, when your build provides it, CS2 → Settings → Audio. Test the device at each level, then restart CS2 if it keeps using an old or unintended microphone. The detailed paths below are for Windows 10 and 11; labels can differ on Linux and SteamOS.
Quick method
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and open Sound settings.
- Under Input, select the microphone you want CS2 to use. Speak and confirm that the level meter moves.
- Open Steam, open your Friends List, click its gear icon, and select the Voice tab.
- Set Voice Input Device to the same named microphone. Run Steam’s microphone test and adjust input volume or gain if necessary.
- Launch CS2 and open Settings → Audio. If you see Input Device, Voice Input Device, or a microphone selector, choose the same device instead of Default.
- Check your voice mode (push-to-talk or voice activation), verify the push-to-talk key under Settings → Keyboard/Mouse, and test in a bot match, private lobby, or with a trusted teammate.
If CS2 still uses the previous device, close the game, restart Steam, reconnect the intended microphone, and launch CS2 again.
Can you change the microphone directly in CS2?
Check Settings → Audio first. Some current CS2 builds expose an input-device control, while other installations do not show it or do not apply it consistently. Community reports describe both the in-game selector and Steam’s Voice settings as working locations, but the menus are not identical across every build or platform (community reports).
When no selector is present, use Windows and Steam as the control layers. Do not assume that a Steam microphone test proves that CS2 team voice is configured: Steam voice chat and CS2’s in-game transmission are related, but they are separate features.

Change the microphone in Windows 11 (or Windows 10)
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sound settings (or open Settings → System → Sound).
- Under Input, select the intended headset, USB, webcam, controller, or virtual microphone.
- Speak normally and watch the input meter. A moving meter confirms that Windows receives audio, not that CS2 has selected that device.
- Open the microphone’s properties. Make sure it is enabled, not muted, and has a sensible recording level.
- If Steam is set to Default, make this device the Windows default recording device.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone (Windows 11) or Settings → Privacy → Microphone (Windows 10). Enable microphone access and access for desktop applications.

Choose the device in Steam
- Open the Steam client and open the Friends List.
- Click the Friends List gear icon, then open Voice.
- Find Voice Input Device and select the named microphone you tested in Windows.
- Use Steam’s microphone test or voice preview. Raise Input Volume/Gain only as much as needed.
- If speech is clipped, lower or disable the voice-transmission threshold. If background noise triggers transmission, raise the threshold gradually.
Steam states that Default follows the default recording and playback devices configured in Windows. That is convenient when one microphone is always used, but manual selection is more predictable when several devices are active (Steam voice troubleshooting).

While CS2 is running, Shift + Tab opens the Steam overlay. If the overlay exposes Voice settings in your client, it is an alternative route; the Friends List settings are the primary path.
Test the microphone at every layer
- Windows: the Input meter reacts while you speak.
- Steam: the voice test hears the intended microphone.
- CS2: the selected voice mode transmits when you hold push-to-talk or speak. In a low-stakes match, ask whether teammates see your voice icon and hear you.
- Hardware and software: check a physical mute switch, inline button, Windows mixer mute, and the microphone manufacturer’s application.
Seeing a Windows meter move proves only that Windows receives audio. Seeing a CS2 voice icon does not guarantee that teammates hear you.

Fix CS2 selecting the wrong microphone
Multiple active inputs commonly cause a webcam, monitor, controller, VR headset, Bluetooth hands-free profile, or virtual device from streaming and audio software to win selection. Wrong-device reports involving webcams and controllers are documented by SteelSeries support (SteelSeries CS2 microphone guidance).
- Select the intended device by name in Windows and Steam instead of leaving both on Default.
- Temporarily disable unused microphones in Windows Sound settings.
- Disconnect other USB audio devices, reconnect the intended microphone, and relaunch CS2.
- During diagnosis, bypass USB hubs, extension leads, adapters, and docks; try another USB port.
- Restart Steam if its device list is stale. Then restart CS2.
- Close Discord, OBS, virtual mixers, noise-processing tools, and broadcast software temporarily to rule out exclusive access or routing.
Steam recommends trying alternate ports, bypassing adapters, and testing the hardware on another computer when diagnosing voice hardware (Steam voice troubleshooting).

When the microphone works in Discord but not CS2
- Close CS2 completely.
- Choose and test the microphone in Windows.
- Choose that same named device in Steam → Friends List gear → Voice.
- Check Windows microphone permissions and hardware mute controls.
- Launch CS2, inspect Settings → Audio, and verify push-to-talk mode and key.
- Temporarily disable unused inputs and other voice applications, then test with a teammate.
If teammates see your voice icon but hear nothing, check the selected device, input gain, voice-activation threshold, and whether they muted you. Valve also says accounts with communication penalties are muted by default on Valve servers until manually unmuted from the scoreboard; a player who reported you for abusive communication can likewise be muted for that reporting user (Valve communication-penalty guidance).

Too quiet
- Raise Steam’s input volume/gain and Windows’ recording level carefully.
- Check microphone-manufacturer software or audio-interface hardware gain.
- Move the microphone closer before applying heavy software boost.
- Use microphone boost only as a starting experiment; excessive boost adds hiss and distortion.
Speech cuts out
- Lower or disable Steam’s voice-transmission threshold.
- Test with automatic gain control, echo cancellation, and noise suppression reduced or disabled.
- Check for aggressive noise gates in Discord, OBS, SteelSeries Sonar, NVIDIA Broadcast, or similar tools.
- Try another USB port and avoid hubs while testing.
- For Bluetooth headsets, verify that Windows has not switched to an unintended hands-free profile.
Fixed advice such as “100% level” or a particular boost percentage is not universal: microphone sensitivity and room noise differ, so judge the result by the meter and a teammate’s report.

When to contact Steam support
Use Valve’s official CS2 support flow if the microphone fails in Windows, disappears from every application, or remains unusable after resetting device selection, permissions, connections, and voice settings. It is also the appropriate route when you suspect an account communication restriction: Steam CS2 technical support.
Console commands can alter voice behavior or thresholds, but no current, officially documented command established here reliably selects a hardware microphone by name. Device selection through Windows and Steam remains the dependable fix.
