In the Xbox app, select your profile picture or gamertag, open your current presence status, and choose Appear offline. You stay signed in and can usually continue using Xbox features or playing online; the setting changes Xbox presence visibility, not your internet connection.
How to appear offline in the Xbox app
- Open Start, search for Xbox, and launch the Xbox app.
- Check that the displayed gamertag is the Microsoft account you want to hide.
- Select your profile picture or gamertag. Depending on the app build, this profile control or Social entry may be in a different place.
- Select the current presence label, such as Online or Do not disturb.
- Choose Appear offline.
- Wait briefly for the change to synchronize. Reopen the profile menu; the status should indicate offline, or the available choice should now be Appear online.
The Xbox app is the primary Windows interface for this account-level setting. Microsoft describes the app and its sign-in context in its Xbox app for Windows support documentation.
Use Xbox Game Bar instead
If you are already playing, you can change the same Xbox Social presence without opening the full app:
- Press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the Xbox Social widget.
- Select your profile picture or gamertag, then open the current presence status.
- Choose Appear offline.
If Xbox Social is not shown, open Game Bar’s Widget Menu and enable it. Also confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled in Windows and install available Xbox Game Bar updates through Microsoft Store. This is the same profile presence used by the Xbox app, not a separate invisibility system.

What “Appear offline” actually changes
It is a presence setting. It normally changes what Xbox friends see about your live Xbox Social status while leaving your account connected.
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Xbox friends-list presence | Generally shown as offline rather than online. |
| Xbox Social “playing” indicator | Normally hidden from Xbox Social friends. |
| Account identity | Your gamertag, gamerpic and profile do not disappear. |
| Achievements, captures and activity | Visibility remains governed by Xbox privacy settings; appearing offline does not erase past or posted activity. |
| Game lobbies, parties and scoreboards | A game can still list you in a lobby, session, party roster or scoreboard. |
| Other launchers | Steam, Epic, Battle.net, EA, Ubisoft, Riot and other social systems keep their own presence controls. |
Because games and services can publish activity independently, “offline” in Xbox Social is not a guarantee that nobody can see you playing. Current Windows-specific behavior and these exceptions are also documented in this Windows Xbox Social guide.

Appear offline is not Windows offline mode
Appear offline hides (or attempts to hide) your Xbox profile presence while you remain signed in and connected. It does not inherently block messages, party or game invites, multiplayer, cloud gaming or other online activity.
Offline mode is a separate Windows gaming feature for playing eligible installed games without an internet connection. It has different prerequisites and limitations; see Microsoft’s offline-play instructions. Appearing offline does not put the Xbox app, Windows or a game into that mode.

Choose the right presence status
| Status | Use it when | What friends generally infer |
|---|---|---|
| Appear offline | You want to use Xbox privately or avoid a visible online indicator. | You appear unavailable or offline. |
| Do not disturb | You are online but want fewer interruptions. | You are visibly online and do not want notifications. |
| Appear online or Online | You want normal Xbox Social visibility. | Friends can see your presence according to privacy settings. |
To become visible again, repeat the profile-status procedure and select Appear online or Online, depending on the wording in your version.
Verify the change from another view
Your own profile menu confirms the selected setting, but it does not prove that every Xbox client has refreshed. For a reliable check:

Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the gamertag and Microsoft account in the Xbox app, Game Bar and the game itself. Windows users can have different accounts signed into Xbox, Microsoft Store, Game Bar, a console or cloud gaming.
- Set the status to Online, wait a few seconds, then set it back to Appear offline.
- Close and reopen the Xbox app, then check the Xbox Social widget with Windows + G.
- Update the Xbox app, Xbox Game Bar and Gaming Services through Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows and refresh the other person’s friends list.
- Sign out of other Xbox-connected devices or sessions that may be using a different account or reporting activity.
- Check Xbox Support for a service outage if synchronization remains delayed.
- As a last resort, open the Xbox app’s Windows settings and choose Repair. Use Reset only with caution: it can remove local app data and require you to sign in again. The exact Settings path varies by Windows release.
A game-specific lobby, scoreboard or third-party launcher may still show activity even after Xbox Social updates correctly.

Review privacy settings for stronger control
For more than presence concealment, review Xbox privacy and online-safety controls. They separately govern who can see when you are online, game and app history, captures and activity, communications, and invitations. Open Microsoft’s online-presence guidance and privacy and online-safety settings. Option names and available values can vary by account age, region and family-organizer restrictions.
These controls can reduce visibility or communications more broadly, but no single setting guarantees that every game, launcher or public activity surface will hide you.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 availability
The Xbox app and Xbox Game Bar are used on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Microsoft can move profile controls or rename labels in app updates and staged UI rollouts. If you do not see the exact placement described above, open the signed-in profile and look for its current presence status; the account requirement and setting’s scope remain the same.
