For Minecraft Bedrock, you can update to the latest stable release or join an available Beta/Preview build—but there is no official Java-style selector for choosing any older stable version. Use your device’s normal update controls for the latest release, or Minecraft’s official Beta/Preview route to test an in-development build. Back up important worlds before trying a beta.
Choose what you mean by “change version”
| Your goal | Supported route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Use the newest stable Bedrock release | Update Minecraft through your device’s store, launcher, or console update controls. | This is the ordinary release path. Minecraft’s update guide gives platform-specific directions. |
| Try an in-development build | Join the official Beta or Preview where it is available for your platform. | Beta/Preview is for testing upcoming builds, not selecting an arbitrary older stable release. Minecraft’s beta guide explains the supported paths. |
| Install an older stable Bedrock release | No general, officially supported procedure for choosing an arbitrary older Bedrock release is established by Minecraft’s guidance. | Do not treat third-party launchers or archived app packages as Minecraft-supported downgrade steps. |
This differs from Java Edition: Minecraft says Bedrock players can play the latest stable version or Beta/Preview, while the Java Launcher includes a release selector. See Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison.

Update Bedrock to the latest stable release
Use the update mechanism for the platform where you own or play Minecraft. Exact labels can change; Minecraft’s official update instructions are the best reference for console-specific menus.
- Android or iPhone/iPad: Find Minecraft in Google Play or the App Store and check for an update. Minecraft says mobile updates normally happen automatically. To check the installed version, open the game and read the number at the lower-right of the screen, then compare it with the version shown by the store. See Minecraft’s mobile update guide.
- Windows: Open Microsoft Store, go to Library, and check for app updates.
- Xbox: Check the game’s updates under Manage game & add-ons > Updates.
- PlayStation: Updates may install automatically; you can also check from the game’s menu. Consult Minecraft’s guide for the current steps for your console.
Join or leave a Bedrock Beta or Preview
Beta and Preview are in-development builds, and availability and enrollment menus vary by platform. Minecraft calls the Android program Beta; on most other supported platforms, the in-development build is called Preview. Follow the current instructions in Minecraft’s Beta guide and Preview installation guide for your device rather than assuming one platform’s steps apply to another.

Android Beta
On Android, join through Minecraft’s Google Play listing and leave through that same listing. After leaving, the app returns to the regular version. Check the listing and Minecraft’s current Beta guidance for enrollment details.
Preview on supported platforms
Preview uses a separate app or a platform-specific installation route where supported. Console instructions describe installing through the console store or choosing Preview in Settings, depending on the console. Confirm that your platform is currently eligible before following a particular route.

Protect worlds before switching
Make copies of important worlds before entering a beta or Preview build. Minecraft’s October 6, 2021 beta notice warns that worlds played in that beta cannot be opened in previous game versions. That warning is a reason to keep a separate backup; it should not be read as a current list of Preview platforms or as a guarantee that every Preview build behaves identically. The notice is available in Minecraft’s beta release notes.
Why a Bedrock downgrade may not be possible
Minecraft’s official guidance documents updating to the current release and accessing Beta/Preview; it does not provide a general method for installing any older stable Bedrock version. The Java Launcher’s version selector is not a Bedrock feature. If you need an older build for a particular server or device, check with the server operator or Minecraft support for platform-specific options rather than relying on unofficial installers or downloads.

If the version change is for multiplayer
For a connection or version-mismatch problem, first make sure both players are on compatible current releases. Avoid Beta or Preview when your goal is to join friends playing an ordinary stable release; an in-development build may not match it. If the issue persists, use Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide.
