What you are changing
Palworld stores many dedicated-server options in a single configuration assignment named OptionSettings. The server browser uses the ServerName value as the listing name, while ServerDescription supplies the descriptive text associated with the server. These are configuration values, not properties of a particular world save, so changing them does not require creating a new world.

The reliable sequence is always the same: stop the process that owns the file, locate the active configuration, edit the two keys without changing the surrounding syntax, save, and restart. If the old name returns after a restart, a control panel, startup command, or container variable is probably rebuilding the file.
Before you edit the file
Stop the server first
Use the server console, service manager, host panel, or operating-system process controls to shut the server down cleanly. A guide cited for this procedure reports that changes made while the server is running can be overwritten when the process shuts down. That report is based on a single guide, but stopping first avoids the risk and ensures you are editing a file that is no longer being written.

Make a backup
Copy PalWorldSettings.ini to a safe location before changing it. Keep the original filename and extension in the backup so that you can restore it quickly if a typo prevents startup. A name such as PalWorldSettings.ini.before-name-change is sufficient; do not edit the backup by accident.
Confirm which machine and instance you are editing
A host may run several Palworld instances, and a self-hosted machine may contain both a Steam installation and a test installation. The correct file is the one used by the instance you start for players. If changing a file has no effect, check the service’s working directory and startup command rather than assuming the first matching file is active.

Where PalWorldSettings.ini is located on a self-hosted server
For a dedicated server, the configuration is under the game’s Pal/Saved/Config/ directory. The operating-system-specific folder is normally named LinuxServer on Linux and WindowsServer on Windows.

The path is relative to the dedicated-server installation directory. The exact absolute path depends on where you installed SteamCMD or the server files. Search inside the installation directory for Pal, then open Saved, Config, and the folder matching the operating system.
Those folders may not exist until the server has been launched at least once. Start the server, allow it to create its initial files, stop it cleanly, and check the path again if you cannot find the directory.
If PalWorldSettings.ini is missing
Do not create an empty file. Palworld expects the complete OptionSettings=(...) assignment, including the other settings that control the server. Instead, copy the shipped template and rename the copy.

- Stop the dedicated server.
- Open the server’s installation folder and find
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Copy that file into the appropriate
Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/orPal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/folder. - Rename the copied file to
PalWorldSettings.ini. Check that your editor or file manager has not added a second extension such as.txt. - Open the renamed file and edit the existing
OptionSettingsline.
This copy-then-edit pattern is also the one described in Pocketpair’s dedicated-server documentation. If the template is not present, verify that you are looking in the server installation directory rather than in the saved-world directory.
How to edit ServerName and ServerDescription
Use the existing OptionSettings line
Open PalWorldSettings.ini in a plain-text editor. The settings are held in one comma-separated group beginning with OptionSettings=( and ending with ). Find ServerName and ServerDescription. If the template already contains them, replace only the text between their quotation marks.
A minimal example looks like this:
OptionSettings=(ServerName="My Palworld Community",ServerDescription="Co-op survival server for our group")Your file will normally contain many additional options before and after these keys. Keep those options, commas, parentheses, and the one-line structure intact. The example is deliberately short to show the syntax; do not replace a full configuration with this two-key example unless you are certain the rest of your server settings are unnecessary.
Follow the value-format rules
- Use double quotation marks around both text values:
ServerName="..."andServerDescription="...". - Separate each setting with a comma. There should be a comma between
ServerNameandServerDescription, unless another setting is between them. - Keep the complete
OptionSettings=(...)assignment on one line. Do not turn it into a JSON object or an INI section with one key per line. - Preserve the spelling and capitalization of the keys. The documented parameter name is
ServerName; the description key isServerDescription. - Do not add smart quotes, typographic apostrophes, or markdown formatting. A basic text editor is safer than a word processor.
- Boolean settings elsewhere in the same line use
TrueorFalse; do not “correct” those values to JSON-style lowercase unless the template already uses that form.
Choose text that will display correctly
Keep the name recognizable and the description concise enough for the server browser and host panel fields. Avoid putting an unescaped double quote inside either value, because it can terminate the string early and make the remainder of the line invalid. If you need punctuation, use ordinary letters, numbers, spaces, and common punctuation first; add unusual characters only after confirming that the server starts and displays the text correctly.
Restart and verify the change
- Save the file as plain text with the exact filename
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Close the editor so that no unsaved copy remains open.
- Start the dedicated server using the same service, script, or panel that normally launches it.
- Watch the startup log or console for a normal configuration load and a successful server start.
- Join or query the server and check the displayed name and description. If the browser has cached an old listing, refresh the list or reconnect after the server is fully online.
A startup log check is useful because it distinguishes a display-cache delay from a configuration error. If the process fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and then reapply the change with the original punctuation and line structure.
Changing the name on a hosted control panel
Many game-server hosts expose Palworld settings through a web panel rather than expecting you to edit files directly. Some panels write ServerName, maximum player count, passwords, and related values into the configuration every time the server starts. In that setup, a manual edit to PalWorldSettings.ini can appear to work briefly and then be replaced by the panel’s startup configuration.

Use the panel’s authoritative field
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the server’s Startup, Configuration, or similarly named settings page.
- Find the field or startup variable corresponding to the server name. The exact label varies by host.
- Enter the new name and, where provided, the description.
- Save or apply the change, then start the server.
- Check the generated configuration or startup log after boot to confirm that the new value was written.
If the panel offers only a startup command and no description field, inspect the command’s environment variables or generated configuration options. Do not repeatedly edit the file after every boot; that treats the symptom while the panel continues to regenerate its preferred values.
When a panel and file disagree
Change the panel value first, restart, and then inspect PalWorldSettings.ini. If the file now contains the desired value, the panel is the source of truth. If it does not, look for a second startup profile, an advanced-variable section, or an automated deployment script. The relevant question is not which file you edited, but which component writes the final configuration immediately before launch.

Container images can generate the game settings from environment variables. In the johnnyknighten Palworld image, variables beginning with PALWORLD_ are written into the game-settings portion of PalWorldSettings.ini. The mapping is direct: PALWORLD_ServerName maps to the Palworld key ServerName.
For that image, set the variable in the container definition or compose file, then recreate or restart the container according to your deployment process. Conceptually, the relevant environment entry is:
PALWORLD_ServerName=My Palworld CommunityThe exact YAML, command-line, or panel syntax depends on how you run the container. Keep the variable in the persistent deployment definition rather than adding it only to a one-off interactive shell; otherwise the next recreation can lose the setting. After startup, inspect the generated PalWorldSettings.ini or the container log to verify that the variable was applied.
Do not assume every Palworld image uses the same variable names. The PALWORLD_ mapping described above is specific to the named image. For another image, use its documented environment-variable mapping or edit the mounted configuration only if the image does not regenerate it.

Troubleshooting: “My Palworld server name is not changing”
The server was still running during the edit
Stop it, save the change again, and restart. A running process may hold the old values in memory, and a shutdown write can overwrite your manual edit.
You edited the wrong file
Search for every PalWorldSettings.ini under the server installation and identify the one used by the active service. Confirm the service’s working directory, executable path, and instance identifier. Test with a distinctive temporary name, restart, and then change it to the final name once you have found the active file.
The file is in the wrong OS folder
Linux servers use the LinuxServer configuration directory; Windows servers use WindowsServer. A correctly edited file in the other folder will not affect the running instance.
The template was edited instead of the live file
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini is a template used to create the live file. Once PalWorldSettings.ini exists, changing only the default template does not necessarily change the active server. Edit the live file, or recopy the template only when you intentionally want to rebuild the configuration.
A host panel rewrites the value
If the name changes until the next reboot and then reverts, update the panel’s Startup or configuration field. The panel may write the name each time it launches the server, making the file edit temporary.
A Docker entry overwrites the file
Check the container environment and compose definition for a PALWORLD_ServerName entry or an image-specific equivalent. Update that definition and recreate the container so the generated file receives the new value.

The syntax is invalid
Look for a missing comma, unmatched quotation mark, a second OptionSettings assignment, or a line break inserted into the group. Restore the backup if startup fails, then make one small change at a time. Keep the key names exactly as written and use ordinary double quotes.
The browser still shows old information
First confirm the new value in the startup log or the live configuration. If the server has loaded the new text, refresh the server list or reconnect after the restart. A stale listing does not prove that the file edit failed; an unchanged value in the loaded configuration does.

The name and description are separate fields. Changing the description does not rename the server, and changing the name does not automatically rewrite descriptive text elsewhere in a host panel. Treat each key independently when checking the generated file.
A user report claims that a server may appear in the Community Servers search only after it has a unique name and has been restarted. That report is unverified, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed visibility rule. A unique, correctly saved name and a complete restart are still sensible diagnostics when a newly configured server does not appear, but network reachability, listing filters, and server status can also affect discovery.
Version and documentation caveat
The official Pocketpair documentation consulted for the parameter table is marked for version 0.6.8 and points readers to version 1.0.4 as the latest version. The 1.0.4 page was not available in the material used for this guide, so the current key names and directory layout have not been independently confirmed against that latest build. The procedure and names above match the documented pattern, but if a newer server build ships a different template or launcher, follow the keys and paths in that build’s own files.
In practice, the safest compatibility check is to open the freshly generated DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini, look for the exact keys present in that version, and edit the corresponding live PalWorldSettings.ini. Do not paste an older complete configuration over a newer one merely to change two text fields.
