When an SSH account requires a password change at first login, PuTTY does not open a separate password editor. Enable Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication, connect with the assigned username and temporary password, then answer the server’s prompts for a replacement password. Type the new password twice; after the server accepts it, you should receive a shell prompt. If the session closes or reports an error, reconnect using the new password.

What happens during a first login
A first-login password change normally means the SSH account has a temporary password or an expired password. The SSH server accepts that credential only far enough to require a replacement. PuTTY displays and sends the prompts; the server decides whether the old credential is valid, whether a change is mandatory, and whether the replacement satisfies its rules.

PuTTY’s SSH-2 keyboard-interactive method is designed for a sequence of requests and responses. PuTTY documentation specifically identifies it as a method that can ask a user for a new password when the old one has expired. The server controls the exact wording and order of those requests, so two servers can present different text while using the same PuTTY setting.
“PuTTY leaves this option enabled by default, but supplies a switch to turn it off in case you should have trouble with it.”

A successful first-login exchange has separate stages:
- The server receives the username and temporary or expired password.
- The server accepts that credential for the purpose of continuing authentication.
- The server requests a new password and usually asks you to enter it again.
- The server applies its own password rules and records whether the change succeeded or failed.
- Only after the required exchange succeeds does the normal shell session begin.
Do not treat a password prompt as proof that the change has completed. A server can accept the temporary credential and then reject the replacement, or deny the account before a change prompt appears.

Have the connection details supplied by the administrator ready. You need the server address, the SSH port, the assigned username, and the temporary or expired password. You also need to know any password requirements the administrator has provided, because the server—not PuTTY—enforces length, complexity, history, and reuse restrictions.
- Server address: the host name or IP address supplied for the account.
- Port: the SSH port supplied by the administrator. Do not assume that every server uses the same port.
- Username: enter it exactly as issued. A different account name can produce an access denial or an unusable authentication attempt.
- Temporary or expired password: you will enter this first, before choosing the replacement.
- Replacement password: prepare a value that follows the server’s stated rules and is not prohibited by password history or reuse policy.
Before connecting, check the authentication option in PuTTY. In the session configuration tree, open Connection > SSH > Auth and leave Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication enabled. This is the relevant option for an expired-password replacement through SSH-2.
Step-by-step: change the password on the first login
1. Select SSH and enter the connection details
- Open PuTTY.
- In the session screen, select SSH as the connection type.
- Enter the server address in the host field.
- Enter the SSH port supplied by the administrator.
The port and address determine which SSH service receives the connection. If either value is wrong, you may reach a different service or fail to connect before authentication starts.
2. Confirm keyboard-interactive authentication
- In the left-hand category tree, expand Connection.
- Open SSH, then select Auth.
- Make sure Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication is enabled.
Do not disable this option when the account is required to change an expired or temporary password. If it has been turned off, the server may never receive the interaction needed to present the new-password request.

3. Open the SSH session
Return to the session screen and open the connection. PuTTY may display a host-key confirmation or warning depending on the server and your existing configuration. Follow the administrator’s instructions for identifying the server before proceeding. Once the SSH connection reaches authentication, PuTTY presents a terminal-style prompt.
4. Enter the assigned username
At the login as: prompt, type the username supplied for the account and press Enter. Enter it exactly; an incorrect name can cause the server to reject the attempt or associate the session with a different account policy.
5. Enter the temporary or expired password
When the password prompt appears, type the temporary password and press Enter. PuTTY does not display password characters as you type—not even placeholder dots or asterisks—so the blank-looking line is expected. Type carefully rather than relying on visual feedback.
After this entry, the server decides what happens next. If the credential is invalid, expired in a way the server will not accept, or the account is restricted, you may receive an access-denied message without a password-change request. If the credential is accepted for a forced change, the server continues with keyboard-interactive prompts.
6. Enter the new password when requested
When the server asks for a new password, type the replacement and press Enter. The prompt wording is server-specific; it may identify the value as a new, replacement, or changed password. PuTTY is simply carrying the server’s request.
Use a password that satisfies the administrator’s policy. Typical policy checks can include minimum length, required character classes, password history, and prohibitions on reusing an earlier password, but the exact combination belongs to the server. If the server rejects the value, read the explanation shown in the terminal and choose another value that addresses it.

7. Confirm the new password
Most forced-change exchanges ask you to enter the new password a second time. Type exactly the same value and press Enter. Because PuTTY hides all password characters, a mismatch is not visually obvious; retype slowly and check that your keyboard layout is the one you expect.
8. Wait for the shell prompt
A successful exchange normally ends with the regular shell prompt. That prompt indicates that the server has completed the required authentication flow and opened the session. If the terminal reports that the change failed, follow the server’s message and try again only if it permits another attempt.
9. Reconnect if the session closes
Some servers close the session after a forced change, and a connection can also end with an error even though the replacement was accepted. Start a new PuTTY session with the same server address, port, and username, then use the new password instead of the temporary one. If the new password is accepted, the account is ready for normal SSH use.
Password authentication and keyboard-interactive authentication
These methods can look similar in a terminal because both may display a password prompt, but they serve different roles in a forced-change login.
| Authentication method | What the exchange does | Relevance to a first-login change |
|---|---|---|
| Password authentication | Sends a password credential for the server to evaluate. | It may authenticate a normal login, but by itself it does not describe the multi-step request sequence used for an expired-password replacement. |
| SSH-2 keyboard-interactive | Handles a flexible sequence of server requests and user responses. | It is the mechanism PuTTY documentation identifies for asking a user to supply a new password when the old one has expired. |
For this reason, changing a setting in PuTTY cannot create a password-change request on a server that has not required one. The client can answer the interaction; the server must initiate it and decide whether the account is forced to change its password.
PuTTY settings versus server policy
When behavior differs between two accounts, separate the part controlled by PuTTY from the part controlled by the SSH server.

This division explains why identical PuTTY settings can produce different results on different servers. A client-side option does not override an account lock, an expired credential that the server refuses, or a policy that rejects the proposed password.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting a missing or failed password change
No new-password prompt appears
First, open the saved or current session settings and inspect Connection > SSH > Auth. Confirm that Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication is enabled, then reconnect. If the option is enabled and the server still proceeds directly to denial or closes the connection, the server may not be offering a forced-change interaction for that account. PuTTY cannot manufacture the prompt; ask the administrator whether the account is marked for a mandatory change and whether the server permits keyboard-interactive authentication.
Access is denied before the change begins
Recheck the username and temporary password exactly as supplied. An account can be expired, locked, or otherwise restricted under server policy, and PuTTY cannot override those conditions. Do not keep guessing if the server limits attempts; have the administrator verify the account state and issue a new temporary credential if necessary.
The server rejects the new password
Read the server’s response for a policy explanation. The rejection can result from length, complexity, password history, or reuse restrictions. Choose a different value that complies with the administrator’s rules. If the prompt gives no useful explanation, ask the administrator for the exact requirements rather than changing PuTTY settings.
The confirmation does not match
Because PuTTY hides every password character, you cannot compare what was typed on screen. Enter the replacement again carefully, ensuring both entries are identical. If repeated attempts fail, start a fresh session so that you are responding to a new server exchange rather than guessing at the state of the previous one.
The wrong username was entered
Restart the PuTTY session and enter the correct username at the initial login as: prompt. PuTTY documentation warns that, depending on the SSH protocol and server, changing the username after an unsuccessful attempt may not be accepted. Closing the session and starting again is the dependable recovery.

Keyboard-interactive was disabled accidentally
Reopen the session configuration, go to Connection > SSH > Auth, enable Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication, and reconnect. The setting must be active before the authentication exchange begins.
The session closes after the exchange
Reconnect with the replacement password. A server can end the original session after a forced change, and a terminal error does not by itself tell you whether the new value was retained. If the replacement is accepted on the next login, continue normally. If it is rejected, report the exact message to the administrator so the server-side password-change result can be checked.

Use the point at which the connection stopped as a practical diagnostic:
- Before a username prompt: the connection details, SSH service, or network path may be wrong; the password exchange has not started.
- After the username but before a new-password request: check the username, temporary password, account status, and keyboard-interactive setting.
- During the replacement entry: the server is applying its password policy; read the rejection text and correct the value.
- After confirmation or when the shell prompt should appear: reconnect with the new password to determine whether the server completed the change.
This staging matters because “login failed” and “password change failed” are different server outcomes. Treating them as the same can lead you to change a PuTTY option when the actual problem is an account restriction or a password-policy rejection.
First-login checklist
- Use the administrator’s server address and SSH port.
- Select SSH in PuTTY.
- Verify Connection > SSH > Auth > Attempt keyboard-interactive authentication is enabled.
- Enter the assigned username at
login as:. - Enter the temporary or expired password, remembering that PuTTY displays no characters.
- Answer the server’s new-password and confirmation prompts.
- Wait for a shell prompt or reconnect with the new password if the session closes.
- Contact the administrator for account-state or policy questions that PuTTY cannot resolve.
The practical takeaway
To change an SSH password on the first PuTTY login, enable keyboard-interactive authentication, connect with the assigned credentials, and complete the server’s replacement-password prompts. PuTTY supplies the terminal interaction, while the SSH server controls whether the change is required, which password rules apply, and whether the operation succeeds. When the expected prompt is missing or a value is rejected, troubleshoot the client setting first and then the server-side account and policy.
