In Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, use a personality book for a permanent change, or equip a personality-granting accessory for a temporary one. Books are consumed when used; removing an accessory restores the character’s previous personality. Check the character’s Status screen to confirm which personality is active.
Change a personality permanently with a book
- Find a personality book for the personality you want. Books can be found on bookshelves in towns and other buildings, but a complete location list is not established here.
- Check the book’s name and in-game description to verify its effect.
- Use the book on the character whose personality you want to change. The book is consumed, and the change is permanent.
- Open that character’s Status screen to confirm the active personality.
A book does not provide a reversible toggle to the former personality. To change again, use another applicable book or equip an accessory that grants the personality you want temporarily.

Change a personality temporarily with an accessory
Some accessories grant a personality while equipped. Check the item description, then equip the accessory to apply its effect. Rabbit Tail and Garter are examples of accessories that change personality. When you remove the accessory, the character returns to the personality they had before equipping it. Verify the result in the Status screen.

The Hero’s initial personality is determined by responses to the opening quiz, which ends with a scenario. This quiz sets the starting personality; it is separate from changing personality later with books or accessories.

How recruited characters get a starting personality
Characters you create for the party do not use the Hero’s opening quiz. Their personality assignment is tied to vocation, starting stats and their eligibility for particular personalities. Starting stats can also be customized with seeds. After creation, use books or accessories to change personality by the same methods available to the Hero.
What personality changes affect
Personality is a stat-growth modifier, not just a label: it changes the rates at which attributes grow. The six attributes and their described gameplay roles are:

- Agility: influences action order.
- Stamina: affects HP gained on level-up.

Choose a personality with the character’s role and desired stat growth in mind. Different personalities distribute growth differently, so there is no universally best choice for every character or party.

The community-maintained Dragon Quest Wiki lists 45 personality types and a corresponding personality-changing book or accessory for 28 of them. These are counts from that wiki’s listing, not an independently verified publisher statistic. Its examples include The Eureka Moment for Genius, Loving Living: A Grinner’s Guide for Happy camper and The Champion’s Guide for Paragon.
