To give yourself five XP levels, use /experience add @s 5 levels in Java Edition or /xp 5L @s in Bedrock Edition. Commands must be enabled, and you need permission to use them. In Bedrock single-player, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world.
Use the command for your edition
Java and Bedrock use different command syntax. In both examples, @s targets the player running the command.

Java Edition: add, set, or check XP
Java accepts /experience, with /xp as an alias. The command distinguishes raw experience points from levels, so include the unit in the command. The current Java command reference corroborates the syntax; Mojang’s snapshot notes document the command structure historically. If your installed version suggests different syntax, follow its in-game command suggestions.
- Add five levels:
/experience add @s 5 levels - Add 100 raw experience points:

Bedrock Edition: use L to specify levels
Bedrock’s /xp command interprets a number followed by L as levels. Without the suffix, the amount means experience points. For example, /xp 5L @s adds five levels; /xp 100 @s adds 100 points. Microsoft Learn describes the command as one that “Adds or removes player experience.”
The documented syntax accepts a player name or target selector: /xp <amount: int> [player: target] for points, or /xp <amount: int>L [player: target] for levels. See Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock /xp command documentation.

Target another player
Replace @s with a player name or another suitable target selector. For example, in Java you can use /experience add Alex 5 levels; Bedrock’s syntax also accepts a player name or selector. On a multiplayer world, the command only works if your account has enough permission.
Enable commands and check permissions
Java single-player
Enable Allow Commands when creating the world, or later through World Options. Enter commands in chat with a leading slash.

Bedrock single-player
In the world settings, open the Game tab and turn on Allow Cheats. This permanently disables achievements for that world—even if you turn cheats off again later.

Multiplayer
Command access depends on permissions. A world or server owner can grant the necessary access; if you are a player on someone else’s server or Realm, ask its administrator. Mojang’s commands guide explains command entry and permissions.

If the XP command does not work
- Check your edition: Java uses
/experience(or its/xpalias) with units such aslevels; Bedrock uses/xpand anLsuffix for levels. - Check the unit: In Java, write
levelsorpoints. In Bedrock, addLdirectly after the amount when you mean levels. - Check the target: Use
@sfor yourself, or confirm the player name or selector is valid. - Check world settings and permissions: Commands must be enabled, and multiplayer users need adequate access.
