How to Check a Football Club’s Published Accounts and Assess Its Financial Health

A practical guide to finding the right club accounts and assessing cash, debt, transfer exposure and financial resilience without mistaking profit for cash.

To assess a football club’s finances, first identify the legal entity and reporting period behind its accounts. Then read the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement and notes together, comparing several periods where possible. Profit alone is not a measure of cash or financial security, and UEFA’s licensing rules are not a universal set of statutory filing rules for every club.

Find the right accounts before interpreting them

A club’s familiar name or badge may belong to a group of companies rather than to the legal entity named in a filing. Establish which entity published the document and whether it covers that entity alone or a wider group. If the club has multiple related entities, one company’s accounts may not describe the finances of the whole football operation.

In the UK, Companies House provides guidance on company accounts and filing requirements, as well as access to filed documents: Preparing and filing Companies House accounts. Filing obligations and public availability differ by jurisdiction, so use the relevant national company register and local rules for clubs outside the UK.

Before comparing figures, record the reporting period and year-end date. Also check whether the report is audited, which accounting framework it uses, and whether it includes disclosures about events after the year-end. A change in group perimeter or period length can make two apparently similar annual totals hard to compare.

UEFA’s 2026 club-licensing regulations specify annual financial statements and comparative prior-period figures for licence applicants in that licensing context. They do not replace the statutory accounting and filing rules that apply under a club’s local law. See UEFA Article 67 on annual financial statements and UEFA’s 2026 principles.

Read the statements as a set

Each statement answers a different question. UEFA’s 2026 licensing rules specify a set that includes a balance sheet, income statement, cash-flow statement, statement of changes in equity, notes and management financial review for their purposes.

Statement or section What it shows What to look for
Income statement (profit and loss) Income and expenses reported over the accounting period. How recurring operating income and costs compare, and whether the result includes significant player-trading, one-off or non-cash items disclosed in the notes.
Balance sheet Assets, liabilities and equity at the year-end date. Cash and other assets alongside amounts owed, their classification and the club’s net assets or net liabilities.
Cash-flow statement Cash movements during the period. Whether the club generated or used cash, and how operations, investment and financing contributed to the change.
Statement of changes in equity Movements in equity during the period. How the reported result and other transactions changed the club’s net position.
Notes and management financial review Explanations and details behind statement figures, and management’s financial discussion. Accounting policies, timing of obligations, significant risks and events that may not be clear from headline totals.

A reported profit is not the same as cash generated: accounting income and expenses do not necessarily coincide with when money moves. A club can report a loss while receiving cash from funding or asset sales, and it can report a profit without generating strong cash. Use the cash-flow statement to examine movements in cash rather than treating the bottom line as a cash balance.

Check football-specific assets, debts and obligations

Football club accounts can include transfer-related balances and player-registration assets that are easy to miss if you look only at the headline result. UEFA’s 2026 minimum balance-sheet disclosures for its licensing context identify the following items as useful prompts. National filings may not use identical line items or presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cash and cash equivalents.
  • Current and non-current transfer receivables: money due to the club for transfers, classified by timing.
  • Player-registration intangible assets: the reported value of player registrations.
  • Bank overdrafts and loans, including current and non-current amounts where shown.
  • Transfer payables: amounts owed to other clubs for transfers.
  • Amounts payable to employees and tax authorities.
  • Related-party balances, provisions, and net assets or liabilities and equity.

UEFA sets out these disclosures in F.2, Balance sheet. Treat the list as a checklist for the documents available, not as a guarantee that every country requires accounts to show each item in the same way.

Follow headline numbers into the notes

The notes explain what sits behind statement lines. UEFA’s licensing rules call for systematic notes cross-referenced to the statements and relevant explanatory information; see F.5, Notes to the financial statements. For each large or important balance, find the corresponding note and ask:

Finance Record Book for Small Churches
  • Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
  • 5 3/16" x 9"
  • Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements
  • For transfer payables, how much is due and when? For transfer receivables, when is the money expected, and is collectability or impairment discussed?
  • How are player registrations valued and amortised? Which accounting policies or assumptions affect the reported amount?
  • When do loans and overdrafts fall due, and are any amounts owed to owners or other related parties?
  • What does the report disclose about money owed to employees, tax authorities or other creditors?
  • Are guarantees, commitments or security disclosed? Did refinancing, a change in ownership or another significant event occur after the reporting date?

Only draw conclusions the published statements and notes support. If a detail is not disclosed, do not infer the amount, timing or terms from a headline figure.

Assess financial health across several periods

There is no single public ratio or threshold in the sources cited here that independently determines whether a club is financially healthy. Instead, compare the same measures over several reporting periods, using the same group perimeter and accounting presentation where possible. UEFA’s historical figures illustrate why context matters: it reports aggregate net losses of €1.6 billion across Europe’s top-division clubs in 2009 and a €140 million profit by 2018. Those are historical totals across clubs, not a current benchmark or a verdict on any one club. UEFA’s financial sustainability overview provides that historical context.

Liquidity and cash

Look at cash balances and cash generated or used during the period alongside overdrafts, short-term debt and obligations due soon. A positive cash balance at year-end is a snapshot; it does not by itself show whether the club can meet upcoming payments.

Leverage and funding

Identify total borrowings, when they mature and, where disclosed, their interest costs. Consider how much the club depends on refinancing or funding from owners and related parties. The source and timing of funding matter as well as the headline debt total.

Trading and earnings quality

Separate recurring operating income and costs from player trading and other significant items described in the notes. Consider whether the reported result depends on transactions or accounting items that may not recur, and compare it with the cash-flow statement.

Transfer exposure

Compare transfer receivables and payables, their timing and any disclosed collectability concerns. Consider whether operations appear dependent on future player sales, while avoiding assumptions the accounts do not establish.

Solvency and resilience

Review net assets or net liabilities, accumulated losses, the auditor’s report, management’s financial review and subsequent-events disclosures. UEFA’s principles specify a going-concern preparation assumption for licence applicants and licensees in that context. That assumption is not a guarantee that a club will survive; interpret it alongside the liquidity evidence and disclosures in the report.

Comparability

Check for changes that can distort year-on-year comparisons: a different reporting-period length, promotion or relegation, participation in European competition, a changed group structure, accounting-policy changes or outsourcing. A change in revenue or costs may reflect a different period or business perimeter rather than a like-for-like shift in underlying performance.

Turn the review into a clear conclusion

For a supporter or journalist, a useful conclusion separates what the accounts show from what they cannot establish. State which legal entity and reporting period you reviewed; whether the report covers a group; and which indicators are disclosed. Then describe the direction of cash, debt, transfer balances and equity across comparable periods, noting any material changes in reporting scope or accounting presentation.

Avoid collapsing that evidence into a single health score. Profit, cash, debt, transfer exposure and funding tell different parts of the story, while undisclosed terms and future events remain uncertain. Keep UEFA licensing criteria distinct from the local company-law requirements that govern a club’s published accounts.
