What a game-key card includes
A game-key card does not contain the full game. It provides the key needed to download the game data to your Nintendo Switch 2. As Nintendo explains in its Game-Key Card Overview, “The game itself isn’t included on the game-key card, so you’ll have to download it before you can play.”

That means the card’s physical size does not tell you how much storage the game needs. Check the specific game’s stated free-space requirement instead.
Where to find the required free space
Check the package
Look on the game-key card packaging for the required free-space amount. Nintendo says this figure is indicated on the packaging.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Check the digital listing
If you do not have the package, find the same game’s digital version in the Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop and check its required free space. Nintendo identifies both the packaging and digital listing as places to find the requirement. The amount is title-specific, so there is no single download-size figure for all game-key cards.
Compare the requirement with your Switch 2’s available space
Open the console’s Data Management display to see how much space is actually free, then compare that amount with the game’s stated requirement. Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of storage, but some is reserved for system use; the headline capacity is not the amount available for games. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ for storage information.

Switch 2 software can be stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. If you need additional storage, use a microSD Express card: ordinary microSD cards cannot be used to store Switch 2 software. Check the specific game’s packaging or listing for any game-specific storage requirements.

- You need an internet connection to download the game.
- An internet connection is also required the first time you launch it.
- After that first launch, Nintendo says the downloaded game can be started offline.
- The game-key card must be inserted to play, including when launching offline.
These conditions are described in Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview.
