Before you buy, check the rating on the exact game listing or box, then confirm it in the official rating database used in your market. Read the age category, content descriptors and online or spending notices separately: they answer different questions, and the rating symbol alone is not a full content inventory.
How do I check a game’s age rating before buying?
- Confirm the exact product. Check the title, platform and edition on the listing or box you plan to buy. A rating image for another platform or edition may not describe the item in your cart.
- Look at the product page or packaging. Ratings are commonly shown on digital storefronts and game packaging. ESRB explains where its ratings appear at Where to Find Ratings.
- Verify the title with the rating authority for your market. For ESRB-rated releases, use the ESRB lookup options; for PEGI-rated releases, search the PEGI database. Rating systems and symbols are regional, so use the system shown for the release you are considering.
- Read beyond the age category. Check the content descriptors, then any rating summary or consumer advice available. Look separately for notices about online interaction, purchases or other interactive features.
- Check add-ons or a different edition too. Do not assume downloadable content has the same rating as the base game. ESRB says DLC may receive a different rating when its content exceeds that of the core game; its rating process explains the distinction.
What do the age category and content descriptors mean?
The age category is a suitability guide; content descriptors identify content that contributed to a rating or may matter to a player or household. An age label does not list everything in a game, so use the descriptors and any longer explanation to understand the reasons behind it. ESRB outlines how to interpret these elements in its guide to selecting appropriate video games.
Where available, an ESRB Rating Summary provides additional context for many physical games, and can be searched on ESRB’s site or app. PEGI game entries may include consumer advice and specific content explanations. ESRB says IARC-rated digital games do not have ESRB Rating Summaries, so a missing summary does not by itself mean there is no rating detail elsewhere.
Does a game’s rating tell me about online play or in-game purchases?
Not necessarily. ESRB interactive-feature notices flag features such as in-game purchases, random items, user interaction, location sharing or unrestricted internet. ESRB says these notices do not affect its age-rating assignment. Treat them as a separate check: they can help you assess spending or online interaction, but they are not substitutes for the age category and content descriptors. Where can I look up a game’s ESRB or PEGI rating?

These are complementary checks, not competing recommendations: the product page or box helps confirm what is being sold, while the official database can provide a second check and, in some cases, more context. No single interface or database covers every country or storefront; if you are shopping outside an ESRB or PEGI market, follow the classification label and official source used for that release.
Can ratings differ between physical, digital and downloadable versions?
They can. ESRB describes separate processes for physical and digital games. For physical games, publishers submit questionnaires and gameplay footage; at least three trained raters review the footage and recommend a category, descriptors and interactive elements. Digital games rated through IARC use developer-completed questionnaires to assign rating components, with ESRB monitoring assignments and able to correct inaccurate ones. ESRB also says DLC can receive a different rating if its content exceeds the core game’s. When an add-on or edition is what you are buying, look for its own rating rather than relying on the base game’s label.
