Use this five-minute check before you pay
- Find the exact Australian record. Search the National Classification Database for the game’s title, including its subtitle. Match the edition or release shown by the seller.
- Open the decision. Record the category (G, PG, M, MA 15+ or R 18+) and read the “Why this classification?” information and consumer advice.
- Apply the legal rule. Decide whether the category is advisory or legally restricted for the intended player.
- Check the content cues. Compare the listed themes, violence, language, drug use, nudity, sex, online interactivity and purchase features with your family’s boundaries.
- Resolve anything unusual. If the listing says CTC, the title has not been classified yet. If no record appears, verify the precise version with the seller or distributor and check again nearer release.
Australian Classification says ratings and advice should appear on online gaming storefronts, digital downloads and computer-game packaging. Treat those labels as a cross-check, not a substitute for matching the official title record.
For a useful record of your check, note the title, platform, edition, classification date and consumer-advice wording. This is especially helpful when a game has a standard edition, deluxe edition, downloadable expansion or later update with different content. Save the Australian store URL or a screenshot if you are buying as a gift and the listing may change.

What each Australian game rating means
The category answers a legal-access question, not every suitability question. G, PG and M are advisory classifications. MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted.
| Category | What it indicates | Access rule in Australia |
|---|---|---|
| G (General) | Very mild impact. A game can still frighten very young children. | Advisory; access is not legally restricted. |
| PG (Parental Guidance) | Mild impact. Some material may confuse or upset a child. | Advisory; parental guidance is recommended, but the category is not legally restricted. |
| M (Mature) | Moderate impact. It is not recommended for people under 15. | Advisory, not a legal ban. A child under 15 may legally access an M game. |
| MA 15+ (Mature Accompanied) | Strong impact material. | Legally restricted to people aged 15 and over, with the parent or adult guardian accompaniment exception for an under-15 described in official guidance. |
| R 18+ (Restricted) | High-impact adult material. | Legally restricted to adults. Providing access to an under-18 is illegal. |
The practical distinction is “not recommended” versus “legally restricted.” M does not create the same legal prohibition as MA 15+ or R 18+; an MA 15+ or R 18+ label is not merely advice.
The MA 15+ accompaniment rule is not a general exemption from every sales procedure. A retailer, cinema-style venue or platform may still require identification, restrict unattended use or apply its own transaction controls. If an under-15 is involved, check the current Australian guidance and the seller’s process rather than assuming that a parent’s presence automatically completes the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to search the National Classification Database accurately
Start with the title, subtitle and edition
Type the name exactly as it appears on the Australian store page or box. Include a subtitle, punctuation and any edition wording that distinguishes a remake, expansion, collection or remaster. A short or generic search can return several decisions, so inspect the record rather than choosing the first similar result.
Search results can include a game’s original release and a later port under closely related names. If the title is common, add the publisher, developer or platform terms shown in the listing and then confirm those details inside the decision. Do not rely on a search-engine snippet, an influencer’s description or an old screenshot of a rating symbol.
Match the decision to the product you will receive
Check the platform and release information shown in the record against the listing. An Australian classification generally applies across formats when the game is identical, or when changes are exempt from classification. If the content has changed materially, do not assume an older decision covers the new release; verify the particular edition.
Material differences can include a remastered version, an added story chapter, a regional edit, a collection that bundles another title, or a release that introduces new gambling-like mechanics. A cosmetic upgrade or technical port may still be covered by the same decision when the content is identical, but the NCD record and seller should resolve uncertainty.

Read the decision and consumer advice together
The category is a broad impact level. The consumer advice identifies the content that drove the decision and may indicate that it is impactful or frequent. Read the advice before deciding that a game suits a particular child.
Open the full title decision instead of stopping at the category icon. The record’s explanatory information can clarify why a game received its category and whether a warning relates to a central mechanic, a brief scene or repeated content. That context is more useful than treating every symbol as a complete review.
What consumer advice tells you
Australian game advice normally covers six classifiable elements:
- themes
- violence
- coarse language
- drug use
- nudity
- sex
Computer-game records can also flag online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based in-game purchases (such as paid loot boxes) and simulated gambling. These notices are content cues, not a complete prediction of how your child will react.

Online interactivity is a reminder that other players, chat, user-generated material or contact features may form part of the experience. It is not the same as a content category and does not by itself describe moderation quality, voice-chat settings or who can send messages. Check the game’s safety settings and the platform’s family controls separately.
Use two separate questions when buying for a child:
- Is access legally restricted at this age? The category and Australian access rule answer this.
- Is the described material suitable for this child? The consumer advice and your own judgement answer this.
For example, an M game may be legally accessible to a 14-year-old, while its advice about horror themes or drug use may still make it unsuitable for your family. Conversely, a G classification does not guarantee that every scene will be comfortable for a very young child. A child who is sensitive to realistic violence may need a different choice from a child who is mainly affected by frightening imagery, even when both games have the same category.
Gambling-like features: the rule that changed in September 2024
Australian classification rules changed on 22 September 2024 for games on computers, consoles, phones and tablets.
- Paid chance-based in-game purchases, including loot boxes, carry a minimum M classification.
- Simulated gambling carries a minimum R 18+ classification.
Consumer advice may use the phrases “Chance-based in-game purchases,” “High-impact simulated gambling” or “Gambling themes.” “Gambling themes” does not necessarily mean the game meets the threshold for simulated gambling, so read the wording rather than treating every gambling reference as an R 18+ finding.
“Computer games containing simulated gambling have a minimum classification of R 18+.”
Australian Classification rating guidance
The change is relevant even when the core game looks suitable. A child may encounter a random paid item system, casino-style mini-game or another monetisation mechanic after purchase. Search the title and inspect the advice instead of relying on a trailer or a retailer’s short description.
Chance-based purchases and ordinary in-game purchases are different warnings. A game can disclose paid cosmetic items without using randomness, while a loot box warning indicates that the purchaser cannot know the exact reward in advance. Neither warning tells you the total amount a player might spend, so inspect prices, currency bundles, subscription terms and parental payment controls as well.
Recommended Free Tools
As parenting expert Gen Muir put it in Australian Classification’s guidance: “Do your homework beforehand: check the game’s classification and any warnings about gambling.” That advice is useful for both a paid release and a free-to-download mobile game.
What “CTC” means on a trailer or store listing
CTC means “Check the Classification.” It indicates that the game is unclassified at that advertising stage; it is not an age category and does not mean the game is suitable for every age.
Australian Classification recommends checking again closer to release, when the decision should appear on advertising and the product listing. Do not infer a likely rating from an overseas badge, an earlier instalment or the publisher’s marketing language.

Release timing can change, so set a reminder for the week before purchase rather than treating a launch trailer as final evidence. If a retailer still displays CTC after release, ask whether the Australian version has a published decision and whether the page is showing the correct region.
If the NCD has no matching result
Try a more precise search
Search the full title and subtitle, then try the official spelling used by the Australian seller. Remove a platform suffix only if it prevents a match, and inspect similarly named records for the correct edition.
Ask which version is being sold
A missing result can mean the Australian decision has not yet been published, the listing uses a different title, or the seller is offering a version that needs its own check. Ask the retailer or distributor to identify the Australian release and its classification status.
Do not treat absence as permission
Industry processes allow a missing title to proceed to a classification decision through an application, an approved classification tool or an accredited classifier. Those are routes for obtaining a decision. They are not a reason for a buyer to assume an age rating when no Australian record is available.
If a seller cannot explain the missing record, consider waiting rather than relying on a foreign rating or an unverified marketplace listing. Keep the invoice and product details if the delivered edition differs from the advertised one.
How to handle digital storefronts, physical boxes and foreign badges
Digital games
Australian Classification says ratings and consumer advice should be displayed on online gaming storefronts and digital downloads. Open the Australian store region, not a page from another country, and compare its badge with the NCD record.
Mobile and online games may use the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) process to display a local rating. IARC definitions reflect Australian categories, but the Australian title record remains the strongest check when it is available. Confirm that the account’s country, currency and storefront region are Australian before relying on the badge.
Physical games
Check the Australian classification mark and advice on the packaging. If the box and the NCD disagree, pause the purchase and confirm the edition with the seller; the official title decision is the stronger reference.
ESRB and PEGI labels
An ESRB or PEGI number describes a different rating system. It cannot be used as the Australian legal classification. Look for the Australian title record or the local retailer’s Australian classification information.

Put the candidates side by side using the same questions:
| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Australian category | G, PG, M, MA 15+ or R 18+, and whether the category is advisory or restricted. |
| Consumer advice | Specific themes, violence, language, drug use, nudity, sex and their described impact or frequency. |
| Online and spending features | Online interactivity, ordinary in-game purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling. |
| Status | A final Australian decision or CTC/unclassified advertising. |
| Total cost exposure | Up-front price plus subscriptions, optional purchases and any recurring charges disclosed in the terms. |
This prevents a common mistake: choosing the lower symbol without checking whether its advice describes a particular feature your family considers unacceptable.

Also compare how much supervision each game requires. A single-player M title with no purchases may be a better fit for one family than a PG online title with open chat and frequent spending prompts. The classification cannot rank those trade-offs for you; recording them side by side makes the decision explicit.
Rating is not the same as price, privacy or subscription consent
The classification system does not tell you the game’s total cost or how its account and payment systems work. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says online and mobile games are covered by Australian Consumer Law and that developers and retailers must not mislead consumers about descriptions, features, pricing or subscriptions.

The ACCC does not issue age classifications. Use Australian Classification for the rating and consumer advice, then use the store’s terms and the ACCC’s consumer guidance for spending and contract questions.
Check whether a trial converts automatically to a paid subscription, whether virtual currency is sold in bundles, and whether a child can use a stored payment method without a separate approval. These are purchasing decisions, not reasons to change or reinterpret the Australian rating.
Online age assurance and R 18+ games
An eSafety Commissioner FAQ accessed on 13 October 2026 says users will have to complete some form of age assurance to access online games classified R 18+ by the Australian Classification Board. The same guidance says other games do not require those age checks under that guidance.
Age-assurance rules and staged implementation dates can change, and a platform’s checkout may implement them differently. Treat this as a policy-sensitive access issue, not a guarantee about every store’s current purchase flow. Check the platform’s current Australian notice if an R 18+ game is involved.
An age check is not a substitute for reading the classification. It may establish that an account meets an access requirement, but it does not tell a parent whether the content, chat functions or spending model suits a particular teenager.

The practical answer to common buying questions
“Is an M game illegal for my 12-year-old to play?”
No. M is not recommended for under-15s but is advisory rather than legally restricted. You still need to read the consumer advice and decide whether the content suits that child.
“Can I buy an MA 15+ game for a 14-year-old?”
MA 15+ is legally restricted to people aged 15 and over, subject to the parent or adult guardian accompaniment exception described in official guidance. Check the current Australian rule and the retailer’s process before purchase; do not treat MA 15+ as ordinary parental advice.
“What if a game has a PEGI 12 or ESRB Teen badge?”
Those are foreign classifications. They do not establish the Australian category. Verify the Australian NCD record or local Australian storefront label.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
“Does an R 18+ label always mean gambling?”
No. R 18+ can result from different high-impact adult content. Read the specific consumer advice. Simulated gambling has a minimum R 18+ classification, but the symbol alone does not identify the reason.
“Where do I check a digital game’s Australian rating?”
Start with the NCD, then compare the result with the Australian digital storefront listing. The official title record is the strongest check when available.
“What should I do if the store and NCD show different ratings?”
Stop and verify the edition, region and release date. Contact the seller or distributor and use the NCD decision as the authoritative reference. Do not assume the higher or lower symbol is correct simply because it appears on the checkout page.

Bottom line
Before buying, verify the exact Australian title in the National Classification Database, read the complete consumer advice, and apply the correct legal rule. Treat M as advisory, MA 15+ and R 18+ as restricted, and CTC as “not classified yet.” Since 22 September 2024, paid chance-based purchases require at least M and simulated gambling requires R 18+. Check spending, privacy and subscription terms separately because an age rating never tells you the game’s full financial or account implications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check a game’s age rating in Australia?
Search the exact title, subtitle and edition in the Australian Classification Board’s National Classification Database. Open the matching decision, read the category and consumer advice, then compare it with the Australian retailer or storefront label.
Is M the same as a legal under-15 ban?
No. M is advisory and not recommended for under-15s, but a child under 15 may legally access an M game. MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted categories.

What does CTC mean on a game trailer?
CTC means “Check the Classification.” The game is unclassified at that advertising stage. Check the NCD again closer to release rather than guessing from a foreign rating.
Do loot boxes affect a game’s Australian rating?
Since 22 September 2024, paid chance-based in-game purchases such as loot boxes carry a minimum M classification. Simulated gambling carries a minimum R 18+ classification.
Can I rely on an ESRB or PEGI rating in Australia?
No. ESRB and PEGI are foreign systems. Verify the Australian NCD record or the Australian storefront’s local classification information.
Does a classification show the game’s total cost?
No. Check the store’s price, subscriptions, optional purchases, chance-based spending, renewal terms and privacy practices separately. “Free to download” does not necessarily mean free to play.
The Bottom Line
Search the exact Australian title in the NCD, read its consumer advice, and distinguish advisory M from restricted MA 15+ and R 18+. Treat CTC as unclassified, check gambling-related warnings introduced on 22 September 2024, and review spending and subscription terms separately.
