Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore reinstalling or powering on a dropped RTX 4090, shut down the PC, switch off and unplug the power supply, then inspect the card without touching its circuitry or contacts. Do not power it if you find a cracked or bent PCB, damaged PCIe contacts, a damaged power connector or cable, or melted or burnt parts. A visual check—and even a successful boot—cannot rule out hidden impact damage.
Make the PC safe before inspecting the card
- Shut down the computer, switch off the power supply, and unplug the PC from mains power before opening the case or handling the card.
- If you notice smoke, a burning smell, melted plastic, or exposed conductors, do not reconnect power.
- Handle the graphics card by its edges. NVIDIA’s installation guidance says to avoid touching circuitry and the PCIe connector: NVIDIA graphics card installation guidance.
Inspect the card for visible damage
Check the card in good light without disassembling its cooler. Opening the card may cause further damage or complicate support; ask the manufacturer or a qualified technician before doing so.
PCB, backplate, and cooler
Look for a cracked, split, bowed, or visibly bent PCB; a deformed backplate; a shifted shroud; or loose-looking screws. MSI lists a deformed backplate and cracked PCB as examples of physical damage: MSI graphics-card warranty information. These are examples, not a definitive self-diagnosis; the service center makes the actual assessment.
Fans
Check for broken blades, a visibly tilted fan, or debris that could stop a fan from turning freely. Do not force a fan to move. Broken fan blades are another damage example listed by MSI.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
PCIe edge connector
Inspect the gold contacts and the material around them for cracks, deep scratches, missing plating, bent areas, or exposed underlying material. ASUS identifies PCB breakage affecting internal traces and damaged gold plating on gold fingers as structural damage from external force: ASUS guidance on physical damage to graphics cards. ASUS notes that its examples are not exhaustive. Do not insert a card with visibly damaged contacts into the motherboard.
Power socket, adapter, and cable
Check for a cracked or distorted plug, looseness, exposed wire, discoloration, melted plastic, or a cable pulled at an angle. The reference RTX 4090 supports either the supplied adapter with three PCIe 8-pin cables or a PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 450 W or greater; partner cards and their supplied components may differ. Confirm the exact card’s requirements in NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications.

If the plug, socket, adapter, or cable appears damaged, leave the card unpowered. In a November 18, 2022 update about RTX 4090 power-connector reports, NVIDIA said its findings suggested a common issue was connectors not being fully plugged in. That statement concerns connector seating; it does not establish that impact caused a connector problem or provide a post-impact test. Read the NVIDIA connector update.
Decide whether to reinstall or seek service
Do not power the card if you see obvious damage
Leave it unpowered if the PCB or structure is cracked or bent, contacts are visibly damaged, the power connection or cable is damaged, or parts are burnt or melted. Contact the card maker or a qualified repair service for an assessment rather than trying repeated power-ups.

If you find no visible damage
A minor bump with no visible damage or new symptoms may leave cautious reinstallation as an option for someone comfortable working inside a PC. Follow the card maker’s handling and installation guidance, and stop if the card does not seat normally. The sources do not establish a test that can rule out hidden impact damage, so a clean visual inspection is not a guarantee.
Stop if new symptoms appear
Do not keep testing the card if a fan rubs, the display shows artifacts or goes black, the PC crashes, or you notice an unusual electrical smell or another new fault. Power the system down and arrange a professional assessment. Do not treat a successful boot, image, or benchmark as proof that the card is undamaged.

Contact the right support provider
For a Founders Edition, NVIDIA says to contact NVIDIA support; a partner-made GeForce card is supported by its add-in-board partner. Identify the exact model and check the seller, purchase date, region, and applicable warranty terms. NVIDIA’s warranty terms list damage related to misuse or negligence among exclusions, while partner terms and repair options vary. Start with NVIDIA warranty information and the support channel for the card’s maker. MSI and ASUS damage examples do not decide whether a particular card is covered.
RTX 4090 specifications are not a damage test
NVIDIA’s reference RTX 4090 specifications list a length of 304 mm, width of 137 mm, and three-slot thickness of 61 mm. Partner cards can differ, so use the exact model when checking fit or discussing parts and service. NVIDIA also lists 450 W total graphics power and 850 W required system power for the reference product; those figures describe specifications, not whether a card survived an impact.

NVIDIA reported about 50 cases globally during its 2022 power-connector investigation. That historical figure refers to cases NVIDIA said it was aware of in that investigation; it is not an estimate of drop-related damage or a statistic about all RTX 4090 cards.
