Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore buying an Xbox game, open the exact Xbox Store listing and compare what each edition includes: the base game, named DLC or a season pass, supported consoles, and any stated upgrade entitlement. Then check the add-on listings and requirements separately. Edition names alone—and the presence of an Xbox One version—do not prove that specific content or a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade is included.
Start with the exact game listing
Search the Xbox Store for the game you intend to buy, then open its product page and edition selector. Make sure you are comparing the same title and the relevant platform versions. Microsoft describes Store bundles as collections of games and/or add-ons sold as one product, while publishers configure the products and their contents. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Publishing Guide and Microsoft Learn guidance on bundles.

Use the listing’s itemized contents, not labels such as “Deluxe,” “Gold,” or “Ultimate,” to determine what you will receive. Record the base game, named expansions or other DLC, season pass, bonuses, and any stated exclusions. A season pass or add-on bundle can package multiple products, but its name alone does not establish which ones.

Look for the exact console platforms supported and an explicit statement about Smart Delivery or an upgrade. Smart Delivery is a product configuration, not a blanket promise attached to every Xbox One purchase. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Publishing Guide describes it as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S being configured as one product, so a buyer can purchase once and have the native package for the device installed.

That description does not establish the upgrade terms for every game. For example, Xbox Wire’s Gears 5 discussion quoted Xbox’s Jason Ronald saying that people who had purchased Gears 5—or had access through Game Pass—would get the Xbox Series X version without another purchase. That is a Gears 5 example, not a universal entitlement. Check the current listing for the game you are considering rather than extrapolating from another title.
Also distinguish an included upgrade from a separately sold upgrade product. The Xbox Store has, for example, listed a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Standard to Ultimate Upgrade that names the content it unlocks and warns against buying a new edition separately. That is a title-specific illustration, not a general Xbox rule; check the current page and its terms before relying on it.

Verify DLC and add-on requirements
Open the individual Store page for each add-on you want. Confirm that it is for the correct game and platform, whether the edition or bundle already includes it, and any stated access or installation requirements. Microsoft’s GDK guidance says players should be able to see access to add-ons or consumables and be told if the game must finish installing before they can use them: Microsoft guidance on add-on packaging.

- Check whether the edition includes that specific add-on; do not assume that a season pass includes every past or future item unless the listing says so.
- Read compatibility, installation, and access requirements shown on the add-on page.
- If you rely on a subscription, disc, or existing base-game license, verify the listing’s stated requirements. There is no universal DLC ownership or subscription rule established for every product.
Compare the editions by the content you actually want
When a game has multiple editions, compare the same details for each one. A higher tier is not automatically better value if its extras are not content you want.
