Back up your saves and record your active mod list before testing. A mod appearing in the manager is not, by itself, proof that it supports the latest patch.
What you need to verify
Mod compatibility is specific to the game build, platform, mod version, dependencies, and sometimes other installed mods. There is no universal compatibility list that can confirm every third-party mod for every setup, so check the information for each mod you use.
- Game build and platform: Note the version shown by the launcher or game, and whether you play on PC, Mac, PlayStation, or Xbox.
- Mod status: Look for an author statement or release update that names your game patch or build.
- Requirements and conflicts: Confirm required mods, load order, and any declared conflicts.
- Multiplayer eligibility: If you play with others, check that everyone can use the same mod versions on their platform.
Check mods safely, step by step
- Record your setup. Before removing or changing mods, copy important saves and capture or write down your active mod list and load order. Larian’s official modding documentation points to best practices covering backups, versioning, and conflicts.
- Check each mod’s source. Open its official Mod Manager page or the original author’s page. Look for an update or compatibility statement for your installed game build, the date of the update, required dependencies, and known conflicts. If there is no clear statement, compatibility is unconfirmed; do not infer it from an old download page or the mod’s presence in a browser.
- Inspect the in-game Mod Manager and verification flow. For supported mods, check the Mod Verification window for missing, mismatched, or update-needed entries. Larian describes this check in its Patch 8 announcement. Unsupported local mods may not receive embedded update checking, so verify those directly with their author or original source; Larian also notes that unsupported mods do not receive the same update checking, multiplayer syncing, or full technical support as mods in its supported mod.io pipeline (Community Update #27).
- Check dependencies and conflicts before changing load order. In the official Toolkit documentation, dependencies identify required mods and ensure they load first; conflict declarations can let the game disable a known conflicting mod (Getting Started: Publishing a Mod). These checks help with mod-to-mod relationships, but they do not establish that a mod supports a new game patch. Do not disable a mod without checking whether other mods depend on it.
- Test cautiously. If the game reports an issue or shows a symptom such as a blank hotbar or missing icons, first test whether the problem persists with mods disabled. If it goes away, re-enable mods in small groups, keeping dependencies together, until the issue returns. This can narrow down a cause but cannot guarantee that every interaction will be found. Larian’s support site has troubleshooting areas for mod issues and blank hotbars; its Hotfix #27 notes advise contacting support if the issue remains after troubleshooting with all mods removed.
What the Mod Verification window can—and cannot—tell you
The in-game verification flow is useful for supported mods: it can flag missing, mismatched, or update-needed entries, particularly when setting up cross-play. Treat those prompts as actionable checks, not as a complete compatibility verdict. The window cannot replace an author’s patch-specific status, and a clean result does not prove that every interaction in your setup is safe.
For unsupported local mods, the automatic checks may not be available. Check their author’s release notes and verify them through cautious testing instead. Larian says unsupported local mods can be managed in the in-game load order, but may not receive embedded update checks or multiplayer syncing and may not receive full technical support for crashes (Community Update #27).

What to do if a mod has not been updated
Do not assume an unupdated mod still works, or that it is permanently broken. Look for a clear statement from its author about your game build; if none exists, treat its compatibility as unknown and avoid risking a valuable save while testing. Larian advised players after Patch 8 that some mods may not work immediately and that authors may need time to update them (Patch 8 announcement). If you want to play while concerned about an existing modded save, Larian suggested starting a new playthrough.

Everyone joining a cross-play lobby must have the same versions of the mods installed. Compare the full mod lists and resolve the specific Mod Verification prompts before joining. For cross-play involving console or Mac, PC players creating the lobby can browse for mods tagged “Available on Console & Mac” (Patch 8 announcement).

Platform support differs: third-party mods cannot be used on consoles, and Larian’s Patch 8 announcement states a console mod limit of 100. That cap is console-specific, not a general PC limit (Patch 8 announcement).
