Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse ffprobe to inspect a video stream’s codec, reported bitrate and frame-rate fields; use FFmpeg’s encoder statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health to assess an active broadcast over time. Do not treat r_frame_rate or a configured bitrate as definitive proof of what viewers are receiving: compare the fields with timestamps, encoder output and receiver-side data.
Check a file or probeable input with ffprobe
Run this command on a local media file or an input URL that your FFmpeg build can probe:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of default=noprint_wrappers=1 INPUT
Replace INPUT with the file path or probeable URL. -select_streams v:0 selects the first video stream, while -show_entries limits the output to the requested fields. The reported bit_rate may be unavailable or may not describe a changing live transmission reliably.
Use JSON when you need to parse the result
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of json INPUT
To inspect every stream, omit -select_streams v:0. That can be useful because the total live bitrate includes audio as well as video. FFprobe also offers -show_packets for packet-level inspection and -show_frames for decoded-frame information; see the FFprobe documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Read the frame-rate fields correctly
avg_frame_rate is the average frame rate. FFmpeg describes r_frame_rate as a guessed base rate: it is the lowest rate at which timestamps can be represented accurately, and may reflect timestamp representation rather than the intended playback rate. FFmpeg’s reference warns, “This value is just a guess!” A higher r_frame_rate therefore does not by itself mean the video plays at that rate. See the FFmpeg AVStream reference (8.1).
When the numbers disagree
- Compare
avg_frame_ratewith the encoder’s configured frame rate and the actual frame timestamps. - For constant-frame-rate encoding, FFmpeg documentation describes a time base of
1 / frame_rateand identical timestamp increments of 1. If metadata remains ambiguous, inspect frames and timestamps rather than choosing one field as definitive. - Do not infer smooth playback or a particular display rate from
r_frame_ratealone.
Measure a live stream over time, not from one metadata field
A file probe or stream’s bit_rate is not automatically a reliable measurement of a changing live transmission. The configured target is not proof of the bitrate YouTube receives. For a running broadcast, compare FFmpeg’s output or encoder reporting with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health information over a useful interval. The appropriate observation method depends on the input, output protocol, FFmpeg build and whether the live endpoint can be probed; there is no single universal command for every RTMP or RTMPS setup.

Use FFmpeg encoder statistics as one signal
For an encode you can monitor, enable FFmpeg’s periodic progress output or use its documented -vstats output. In those statistics, br is bitrate and avg_br is average bitrate, in Kbits/s. They describe encoder reporting, not a guarantee that every short interval of a variable stream matches the target. The FFmpeg documentation explains its encoding statistics.
Include the whole stream in the comparison
When comparing total upload or received bitrate, account for audio as well as video. If you probe only v:0, that result concerns the first video stream, not the complete audiovisual transmission. Packet-level inspection and encoder statistics can help diagnose output, but interpret them alongside receiver-side health data rather than as interchangeable measurements.

Compare your encode with YouTube’s live-ingest guidance
YouTube’s English live encoder settings page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that must not exceed 4 seconds. Choose the bitrate row matching the ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. These are live-ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular encoder achieved them. YouTube may change its guidance, so check its live encoder settings and bitrate table before a broadcast.
| Ingest format | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Do not compare values across different codec, resolution or frame-rate rows as if they were equivalent. YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings concern uploaded videos, not live ingest.

Check bandwidth and stream health before and during the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. The total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth; where a primary and backup stream apply, account for both plus headroom.
- Match codec, ingest resolution, frame rate and target bitrate to the corresponding live guidance row.
- Check the actual encoder output and stream-health feedback during a representative test, rather than relying only on settings or a short file probe.
- If the stream is unstable, check total bitrate against available upload bandwidth and preserve the recommended headroom.
Common diagnostic mistakes
r_frame_rateis higher than expected: it is a guessed base rate and can reflect timestamp representation. Compare average rate, configured rate and frame timestamps.bit_rateis blank or implausible: a stream field is not necessarily a dependable live-throughput measurement. Check encoder reporting and receiver-side stream health over time.- The configured target matches YouTube’s recommendation, but the stream is unhealthy: a target does not prove delivery. Run a realistic test, check output and monitor YouTube’s health messages.
- Upload bandwidth seems sufficient for video alone: total bitrate includes audio, and YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; include a backup stream where applicable.
- A bitrate recommendation appears inconsistent: verify you are reading the live-ingest table and the row for the correct codec, resolution and frame rate—not YouTube’s upload-video recommendations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is keeping uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
