1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor consistent orientation on YouTube Live, inspect each playlist clip and rotate its decoded video frames before encoding. FFmpeg’s -c copy stream-copy mode cannot apply a rotation filter, and output rotation metadata is not guaranteed to survive every muxer and ingest path. Test the exact playlist and output route with a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.
Why playlist clips can appear sideways
A video can look upright in a media player because its rotation is stored as display metadata, even though the encoded pixels are sideways. FFmpeg handles rotation as per-stream display-transform metadata; its -display_rotation input option overrides existing transform metadata. With transcoding and autorotation enabled, FFmpeg applies the rotation during filtering. Otherwise, output metadata is written only when the output muxer supports it. FFmpeg documents these options and conditions.
A playlist may combine clips with different dimensions and transforms. A single assumed rotation or output geometry may therefore be wrong for some items. Inspect each source and choose a consistent intended presentation rather than relying on one clip’s metadata.
Choose between baking rotation into frames and passing metadata
| Approach | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bake in rotation | FFmpeg decodes the video, applies the appropriate video filter, then encodes the rotated frames. | The displayed orientation does not depend on the receiver honoring a rotation tag, but video must be re-encoded. |
| Pass rotation metadata | The output carries a display transform if the output muxer supports it, and the downstream path must honor it. | Avoids rotating pixels, but compatibility across the muxer, live protocol, YouTube ingest, and playback is not established for every setup. |
For a live ingest where consistent display matters, baking rotation into the frames is the more dependable choice: it avoids reliance on downstream interpretation of metadata. This is a practical recommendation, not a guarantee for every source or FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s documentation distinguishes filtering from muxer-dependent metadata output.

Stream copy is not a way to rotate. It skips decoding, filtering, and encoding, so it cannot apply a transpose filter; it can also fail if the output container cannot carry the required information. See FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation.
Inspect every playlist item before choosing a filter
- Probe the source. Run
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width,height:stream_side_data=rotation -of json input.mp4for each file, replacinginput.mp4with the clip path. Check the output for dimensions and any reported rotation side data. If the display transform is not clear from this output, inspect the FFmpeg input log or use a probing method appropriate to your FFmpeg version and source format. - Decide the intended presentation. Determine whether each clip should display portrait, landscape, or another orientation in the final stream. Do not apply the same angle blindly: sources can have different transforms.
- Choose output geometry. Plan a consistent output width, height, and aspect-ratio policy for all playlist items. Rotating a portrait clip changes its displayed geometry; scale or pad as needed only after deciding how you want different aspect ratios to appear.
- Test one representative clip. Transcode a short sample using the transform indicated by that clip’s metadata, then inspect the encoded result in a player and through the intended YouTube Live path.
- Apply the verified per-clip handling to the playlist. Confirm that every segment enters the output with the intended orientation and compatible geometry. A playlist mechanism does not make differing source transforms uniform by itself.
Transcode to bake in the rotation
Use the appropriate transpose or related video filter after inspecting the source transform. The exact filter direction depends on the clip; a fixed angle cannot be prescribed safely for an unknown playlist. A schematic command is:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "<rotation-and-geometry-filters>" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.ts
This is an example structure, not a universal command: replace the filter expression and encoding settings to suit the source, output dimensions, frame rate, hardware, and chosen YouTube ingest configuration. Use an output format and protocol compatible with your FFmpeg build and streaming setup. The key requirement is that the video is decoded and filtered before encoding; do not substitute -c:v copy when applying a video filter.

Audio can be copied only when its codec and container are compatible with the output path. Otherwise, encode audio to a format accepted by that path. If clips differ in frame rate, dimensions, audio layout, or duration, decide how the playlist should normalize those properties and verify transitions between items.
Metadata-only handling has limits
FFmpeg’s -display_rotation[:stream_specifier] rotation is an input option; the angle is expressed in degrees counter-clockwise before display and overrides stored display-transform metadata. With transcoding, -autorotate applies the transform at the filtering stage. In other cases, the output muxer must support the metadata for it to be written. These behaviors do not establish that every live output format or YouTube ingest path will preserve and apply rotation.

For H.264, FFmpeg also documents the h264_metadata bitstream filter’s display_orientation modes: pass, insert, remove, and extract. Insert mode supports rotation and flip data; extract mode attaches the display matrix as packet side data. This is H.264 bitstream signaling, not a guarantee that a container, live protocol, YouTube, or a viewer will honor it. FFmpeg’s H.264 metadata filter documentation describes these operations.
Match YouTube Live’s encoder settings
Rotation is separate from ingest compatibility. YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. Its current H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; bitrate affects picture quality and connection requirements, not orientation. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring a stream, since guidance can change.

Verify the actual playlist-to-YouTube path
- Create a short private or unlisted test stream and send representative clips, including each different orientation and a playlist transition.
- Check YouTube’s preview for sideways, cropped, stretched, or inconsistent footage. Also inspect the resulting playback where practical; preview alone may not reveal every downstream behavior.
- Monitor stream health and confirm audio, motion, frame rate, and connection stability. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video movement and monitoring health. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Change one variable at a time—filter direction, output geometry, codec settings, or metadata handling—then repeat the test. Record the working configuration for the exact source types, FFmpeg build, playlist method, and output route.
The exact combination of source format, playlist method, FFmpeg build, output muxer or protocol, and YouTube ingestion path determines whether a rotation matrix passes through. Official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not promise end-to-end preservation for every combination, so an exact-path test is necessary.
Troubleshooting sideways or inconsistent output
- Video remains sideways after adding a filter: Recheck the source’s reported transform and the filter direction. A filter chosen for another clip may rotate in the wrong direction.
- One playlist item is correct but another is not: Probe each item individually. The clips may carry different rotation metadata or dimensions; use per-input handling that produces the same intended output geometry.
- The command rejects a filter with stream copy: Remove
-c:v copyand encode the filtered video. Stream copy cannot decode frames to rotate them. - Metadata works in a local player but not in the live stream: The output muxer or a downstream component may not carry or honor the display transform. Bake rotation into frames and retest.
- The output looks correct locally but not in YouTube preview: Test the exact ingest protocol and encoded output with a private or unlisted broadcast; local playback does not verify YouTube’s handling of that path.
- Rotation appears correct but stream health is poor: Treat this as an encoding or connection issue, not a rotation problem. Check bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, protocol, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators against its current encoder guidance.
