On PS5, check for an update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose Update System Software if one is available. To confirm what is installed, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information; Sony says the status “Up to date” means the latest system software is installed.

You can also review automatic update options in the same system software settings area. Sony’s PS5 system software support page has the current update information; the available version can change, so check there rather than relying on a version number in a static guide.
How do I confirm which version is installed?

What should I do if my PS5 update is stuck?
- Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads from the control center.
- Highlight the system software update and choose View Error Info.
- Select Try Again.
If downloads continue to fail, Sony directs users to update using a PC or Mac and a USB drive. If the console cannot reach the home screen, use the Safe Mode route described below. Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions also note that a console that has been offline for a prolonged period or has experienced a failed update may need a manual update.
How do I update my PS5 from USB?
Use this documented fallback when the online update repeatedly fails or the console cannot reach its normal menus. You will need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a DualSense controller connected by USB cable for Safe Mode navigation if needed. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the normal update file.

- On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then create a folder inside it named UPDATE.
- On a PC or Mac, download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s system software page.
- Save the file in the UPDATE folder and name it exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Turn off the PS5. Press and hold the power button, releasing it after the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller by USB if prompted, then choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console does not recognize the update file, verify that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that both folder names and the filename are spelled exactly as shown, in uppercase. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode guidance rather than using a file from another source.

A normal update installs current system software while following the update procedure above. Reinstallation is a separate recovery operation, not another routine way to update: Sony says reinstalling system software deletes all data on the PS5 and describes it as a factory or hard reset. Before considering it, consult Sony’s backup guidance linked from its system software support page, and make sure you are following the reinstallation instructions rather than the normal update steps.
