PS5 system updates can add features, improve usability and deliver security updates, but not every release brings a visible change or a specific game-performance improvement. To see what a release actually includes, read Sony’s current update notes, check whether a feature applies to your console and games, then confirm the version installed on your PS5.
What changed in the latest PS5 system update?
Sony’s Latest system software update for PS5 consoles page is the place to check for current release notes. The available dated example here is Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement; it is not confirmation of the latest release as of October 7, 2026.
In that March 16 announcement, Sony said an update introduced broad support for an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Sony described this as a PS5 Pro capability rolling out in phases, with availability dependent on supported games and results potentially varying by title. Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman said the upgrade was intended to improve image stability, fine-detail clarity and consistency of performance across supported titles. That is Sony’s description of the update, not an independent test result.
More generally, system updates may add features, improve usability or address security. Sony says updates, including security updates, are issued from time to time and are necessary for proper console functioning; some apps or content may also require an update. A general note about stability or usability does not establish that a particular game will run better.

How to read PS5 release notes
Read the release notes for the scope and conditions of each change, not just the headline. For any feature, check whether Sony specifies a console model, a phased rollout, or supported games. Treat a feature announcement as applicable to your setup only when those details match your console and the game you play.
- Check the date: Release notes describe a particular update, not necessarily the current release.
- Check the model: A feature may be limited to PS5 Pro or another specified model.
- Check rollout and game support: A feature may arrive in phases or work only in supported titles.
- Keep general notes in perspective: Stability or usability language does not promise a specific change to a particular game.
How to check your PS5 system software version
On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony says that if the version status reads “Up to date,” the latest version is installed.

Automatic and USB update routes
Online updating is the straightforward route for most owners. Sony also documents a manual USB method, which can be useful if an update download repeatedly fails. These routes have different prerequisites; Sony does not establish that USB updating is faster or safer.

| Route | What you need | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic in Rest Mode | Internet access and automatic update settings enabled | The PS5 can download and install updates while in Rest Mode. |
| Manual USB update | A PC or Mac, an FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, and Sony’s official update file | Place the file in the required folder structure, then install it through Safe Mode. |
Enable automatic updates in Rest Mode
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically.
- Keep the console connected to the internet for Rest Mode updating.
Install an update from USB
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create the folders
PS5/UPDATE. - Download the official PS5 update file from Sony and save it in the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file; this is not a fixed size for every update. - Start the console in Safe Mode and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Use only Sony’s official update file and documented methods. Do not turn off the console during installation: Sony warns that interrupting it can damage the console. Sony also warns that unofficial update sources or methods can affect operation and warranty or repair service. A USB drive is only relevant if you choose this manual fallback; it is not required for an ordinary online update.
