Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To check available space, look at the storage drive or console device; to check a game’s installed footprint, look for that game in your installed-app or game-management tools. Those are different measurements: free space on a device does not tell you how large an installed game is, or exactly how much space an uninstalled game will need.
Check storage on a Windows PC
See overall and per-drive usage
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the categories, which can include Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved.
- To inspect another drive, open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives, select the drive, and review its usage breakdown. Windows also lists drive capacity and current use under Disks & volumes.
These Windows storage views show how space is being used on a drive; they are not necessarily an exact measurement of one game’s folder. Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows documentation covers category usage, other drives, drive details, and where new apps and content are saved. If a game is not using the drive you expected, check the configured save location.
Find installed apps in Windows 11
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps and locate the game or launcher. This is a way to find installed programs, not a guarantee that Windows displays the exact size of every game installed through every launcher. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows 11 guide to checking whether an app or program is installed.
Find a particular game’s installed size
Where available, use the game launcher’s own manage or install view to check its size. If that does not provide a clear figure, Windows’ storage breakdown can help you identify which drive is in use, but it may not isolate the game’s exact footprint. There is no single launcher-independent procedure established here for measuring every Windows game.

See how much storage is left on Xbox
An Xbox Insider release note from August 31, 2022, described this route for viewing capacity and available space by storage device: My games & apps > Manage > Storage devices. The note refers to a preview build, so menu names may differ on your console; use the equivalent Storage or Manage controls shown by its current software. The route answers how much room a device has available, not how large a particular installed game is.

For an installed title, look for the game’s management options, such as Manage game and add-ons where available. Xbox’s 2022 Insider release note documents game-management controls, but it is not a current menu guarantee for every Xbox version.

Do not treat the free-space figure as the game’s future install requirement. An installed game’s footprint, a device’s remaining capacity, and the space required to download and install an uninstalled game are separate quantities. The official Xbox material cited here establishes a way to check device capacity and free space, but not a universal, reliable Xbox Store method for seeing the full future install size of any uninstalled title. Microsoft’s Microsoft Store guidance explains how to find games in your library, not a prospective size lookup.

On a PC, a launcher may show an install-size or disk-space estimate during setup, but availability and wording depend on the launcher and game. Check the selected install drive and the estimate shown in that specific installer rather than assuming the game’s advertised download size equals the space needed after installation.

Which storage number should you check?
| What you want to know | Where to look | What the number tells you |
|---|---|---|
| How Windows storage is being used | Settings > System > Storage | Category usage for the selected drive or system view. |
| How much room is available on another PC drive | Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives | Usage breakdown for that drive; it is not necessarily a game-only measurement. |
| Whether a program appears installed in Windows 11 | Settings > Apps > Installed apps | Installed-app listing; exact per-game size is not guaranteed for every launcher. |
| How much Xbox storage is available | My games & apps > Manage > Storage devices, as documented in a 2022 Insider preview | Capacity and free space by device in that preview; current labels can vary. |
| How much space an uninstalled Xbox game will need | No universal method established by the cited official material | Device free space alone does not establish a title’s full install requirement. |
