Read server-port in server.properties, start the server, forward that port and protocol to the host computer, allow it through the host firewall, then probe your public WAN IPv4 address with an external port checker. An “open” result means the probe reached a listening service at that moment; “closed” or “timed out” means the connection did not complete and one of the configuration steps still needs attention.

What an open Minecraft port actually means
A port is not permanently open simply because a router rule exists. A successful check requires a complete path:

- The router receives traffic on its public address and forwards the same port to the server computer’s current private address.
- The forwarding rule uses the protocol required by the edition.
- The operating-system firewall or security suite permits the inbound traffic.
- Your internet connection accepts unsolicited inbound connections.
An external checker tests that path from the internet. It does not prove that every player can connect indefinitely, nor does it test a query, RCON or administration port unless that is also the game server’s listening port. The result describes the service’s reachability at the instant of the probe.
Find the port your server is really using
Read server.properties
Open the server.properties file in the server’s installation folder and locate the line server-port. The number on that line is the value to test and forward. Java Edition commonly uses server-port=25565, but a changed value overrides the default. Never assume 25565 when the file specifies something else.

PaperMC’s reference also shows server-port=25565 and leaves server-ip blank so the server can bind to all available interfaces. Unless you have a specific reason to bind to one local address, do not replace a blank server-ip with a guessed address; an incorrect binding can prevent outside connections even when the router rule is correct.
Distinguish the game port from management ports
Some servers have separate query, RCON or control ports. Those are not automatically the port players use to join. Test the port associated with the game server’s listening setting, not a management value shown in another configuration section.

Java and Bedrock use different defaults
Choose the row for the edition and configuration you actually run. A custom setting always takes precedence over a default.

The protocol matters in the router and firewall. A Java TCP rule will not substitute for a Bedrock UDP rule, and a Bedrock UDP test does not verify a Java TCP listener.
Start the server before you run a port check
An online checker can only observe a service that is listening. Start the server normally and wait until startup has finished before probing it. Checking while the process is stopped is a common reason for a “closed” result, even when the port-forwarding rule is otherwise correct.

Keep the server running throughout the test. If you stop it, restart it, or change server.properties, repeat the check after the process is listening again. A checker’s “open” result is a snapshot, not a reservation of the port for future sessions.
Forward the port to the server computer
Port forwarding tells the router which device should receive an incoming connection. Minecraft Help notes that the port in server.properties must be forwarded and that the exact procedure varies by router manufacturer. The labels below therefore describe the information to enter, not a universal menu path.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface using the router’s own support instructions.
- Open the section labelled something like Port Forwarding, Virtual Server or NAT. The wording depends on the model.
- Create a rule whose external or public port is the exact
server-portvalue. - Set the internal or destination port to the same value unless your server is intentionally listening on a different internal port.
- Enter the current private IPv4 address of the computer running Minecraft as the destination. Typical private addresses include
192.168.x.xand10.x.x.x; this address is for the router rule only, not for friends connecting over the internet. - Select the correct protocol: TCP for the Java default, UDP for the Bedrock Dedicated Server default. If your router offers a combined TCP/UDP option and your server documentation requires both, use the documented choice rather than guessing.
- Save or apply the rule, then verify that the destination address still belongs to the server computer.
The host’s private address can change after a lease renewal or reboot. If the rule still points to an old address, the router will forward traffic to the wrong device. Recheck the address immediately before testing and update the rule when necessary.
Allow inbound traffic through the host firewall
Forwarding reaches the correct computer only if that computer accepts the connection. Minecraft’s official server guidance warns that self-hosting may require network and firewall configuration. Review the operating-system firewall and any separate security suite for an inbound allow rule covering the server process, the configured port and the required protocol.
- For Java, the rule must allow inbound TCP traffic on the configured game port.
- For Bedrock Dedicated Server, the rule must allow inbound UDP traffic on the configured game port.
- Make sure the rule applies to the network profile in use by the host computer.
- If a security suite has its own network filter, check it as well as the operating-system firewall.
After changing a firewall rule, leave the server running and test again from an outside network. A local firewall change does not alter the router’s destination address or the public address you must enter in the checker.

Run the external test correctly
Use the public address, not a private address
Find the connection’s public WAN IPv4 address or use a hostname that resolves to it. Enter that public address and the exact configured port in an external checker such as the checker described by MCState, which tests whether a port is reachable from the internet.
Do not enter the server computer’s private address, such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Those addresses work only inside the local network and cannot identify your home network to an internet-based probe.
Test from a genuinely external network
Testing a public address from inside the same home network can be misleading because some routers do not support, or do not consistently support, hairpin NAT. Use a phone hotspot with Wi-Fi disabled on the home connection, a friend’s connection, or another network that is not behind your router. Keep the Minecraft server running while the external checker makes its request.
Enter the exact value and protocol context
If server-port says 25565, test 25565. If you changed it to another number, test that number instead. For a Bedrock server, verify the configured UDP game port rather than automatically entering Java’s 25565. A checker that probes the wrong port or protocol cannot tell you whether the real game listener is reachable.
How to interpret the result

Troubleshoot a closed or timed-out port
1. Confirm that the server has finished starting
Look at the server process and its startup output. A process that is still loading, has stopped with an error, or was closed after launch is not listening for the checker. Start it again, wait for normal completion, and repeat the external test.

2. Re-read server-port
Open server.properties again rather than relying on memory. Test the exact number shown there. A changed port is the most direct explanation for a check of 25565 failing when the server is configured for another value. Confirm that the file was saved and that you restarted the server when the configuration requires it.
3. Check the router’s destination and protocol
Compare the forwarding rule with the host computer’s current private IPv4 address. Correct an address that changed after a reboot or lease renewal. Then verify that the rule’s protocol matches the edition: Java’s default is TCP; Bedrock’s documented default IPv4 game port is UDP. Confirm both the external and internal port fields rather than assuming one was copied correctly.

Inspect inbound rules for the Minecraft server process and the configured port. A router can forward a packet successfully while the host silently discards it. Make sure the rule covers the active network profile and the correct protocol. If third-party security software filters network traffic, review its inbound permissions too.
5. Verify the address used by the checker
Use the current public WAN IPv4 address or its hostname. A private address such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x is not reachable from the public internet. If your public address changed, update the hostname or checker entry and run the test again.
6. Check for an upstream router
If your home connection has more than one routing device, the first device may be forwarding traffic to a second router instead of directly to the Minecraft host. The rule must cover the path from the public WAN address to the server computer. The exact arrangement and menu names depend on your equipment; consult the relevant router documentation when the public address belongs to one device but the server is behind another.

7. Ask whether the ISP blocks inbound connections or uses CGNAT
When the server is running, the port and protocol are correct, the firewall allows traffic, and the router points to the current host, the internet provider may still prevent unsolicited inbound connections. MCState lists ISP blocking as a possible cause and specifically advises considering carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). Ask the ISP whether inbound connections are filtered and whether the connection uses CGNAT. If the public address shown by the router is not directly assigned to your connection, ordinary port forwarding may not be sufficient.
8. Retest after every change
Change one layer at a time and repeat the probe from a phone hotspot, a friend’s connection or another truly external network. This keeps a successful result tied to the change that fixed the path instead of mixing several edits and losing track of the cause.

A player on the same home network can sometimes connect using the server computer’s private address even while an internet checker reports the public port as closed. That outcome shows that the server is reachable locally; it does not prove that forwarding, the public address, the host firewall and the ISP path are correct.
The reverse situation can also occur when a local test uses a stale private address or the wrong port. For a meaningful internet test, keep the server online, use the public WAN address, enter the configured game port, and connect from a network that does not share the router being tested.
A repeatable check-list
- Configured value:
server.propertiesshows the port you will test. - Edition and protocol: Java uses TCP by default; Bedrock Dedicated Server uses UDP by default for IPv4, with custom settings possible.
- Running service: The server has finished starting and remains running during the probe.
- Forwarding: The router sends the same port to the host computer’s current private IPv4 address.
- Firewall: The host and any security suite allow inbound traffic for the server and protocol.
- Public target: The checker uses the current WAN IPv4 address or a hostname resolving to it, never a private address.
- External vantage point: The test comes from a phone hotspot, friend or other network outside the home LAN.
- Provider path: If all local settings are correct, the ISP has confirmed that inbound traffic is not blocked and CGNAT is not preventing the connection.
What to tell friends once the port is open
Give players the public WAN IPv4 address or the hostname that resolves to it, plus the game port when it is not the edition’s default. They should use the edition and protocol that match the server. Do not give internet players the private address used as the router’s forwarding destination; that address is meaningful only inside your home network.

If you later change the server port, public address or forwarding destination, the connection details change too. Recheck the new value externally before asking players to try again.
When self-hosting is not practical
Port forwarding requires control of the router, the host firewall and the internet connection. A household connection behind CGNAT, an ISP that blocks inbound traffic, or a router you cannot administer may prevent a direct setup even when the Minecraft files are configured correctly. In that case, ask the ISP what inbound options are available or use managed Minecraft hosting instead of exposing a home network. The choice is about network control and reachability, not about changing the game port’s default.
