To check whether your connection can carry a 24/7 YouTube livestream, compare its stable upload speed with the encoder’s total bitrate, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and then test the complete setup with a representative stream. A speed-test result is only a snapshot: it cannot guarantee that your connection will stay available around the clock.
1. Work out how much upload bandwidth your stream needs
Start with the encoder settings you actually plan to use: resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, not its separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (up to four seconds maximum), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its ingest system.
These are selected H.264 examples from YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. They are encoder bitrates, not internet-plan guarantees:
| Output setting | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube’s table also includes other resolutions, frame rates and codecs; AV1 and H.265 recommendations can differ from H.264. Check the current table for your chosen output rather than treating these examples as universal targets.

Include headroom and any concurrent backup stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload capacity and calculating for the primary stream plus any backup stream sent at the same time. Use this planning estimate:
Required measured upload capacity ≈ (primary bitrate + simultaneously sent backup bitrate) × 1.20

For example, a 10 Mbps primary and a concurrently transmitted 10 Mbps backup call for about 24 Mbps of measured upload capacity under this rule: (10 + 10) × 1.20. The estimate is a planning floor, not a promise of uninterrupted service. Other uploads, congestion, outages, Wi-Fi interference, routing problems and changing upstream capacity can still cause interruptions. YouTube does not specify a universal latency, jitter or packet-loss threshold that guarantees a 24/7 ingest connection.
2. Measure upload on the connection you will actually stream from
Run a speed test from the computer and location that will send the broadcast, on the internet connection you intend to use. Pay attention to upload, not just download: YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound, and that other people sharing the network can reduce what is available to your stream. Test at more than one time of day and during typical household or workplace network use as a practical check; YouTube does not prescribe a number of tests or a schedule.

- Compare the upload result with the total bitrate calculation, including headroom and any simultaneous backup.
- Check whether other devices or services are uploading during your test or planned broadcast.
- Prefer wired Ethernet for a computer encoder where practical. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming, and OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable may be useful if the computer and router or switch have compatible ports and you need a wired connection. Check the required length and available ports first. A cable can improve the local link’s consistency, but it cannot increase your ISP plan’s upload capacity or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
3. Test the complete broadcast path
A speed test checks capacity at one moment; a representative test stream checks more of the actual workflow. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, reviewing stream health, and monitoring the feed.

- Set up the encoder: enter the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, and use the recommended CBR and keyframe settings.
- Send a test with representative content: include the kind of audio and motion the continuous stream will contain rather than testing only a static screen.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages: confirm that the stream is accessible from the channel’s watch page and on mobile, and inspect audio and video.
- Observe it under realistic network use: for a continuous operation, run the test long enough to encounter likely usage patterns and check any local recording process. This is a practical operational precaution, not a YouTube-specified duration or guarantee.
- Monitor during operation: watch encoder dropped-frame counts and YouTube stream health; a good initial test does not rule out later congestion or an outage.
4. Test backup and failover separately
Having a backup encoder or connection is not the same as proving that it will take over. YouTube’s encoder setup tips recommend testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that playback rolls over to the backup. Verify the actual player switches; do not assume a backup configuration works just because it is present.
If the backup encoder sends video to YouTube at the same time as the primary, include its bitrate in the upload calculation. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance explicitly accounts for primary plus backup plus 20%.

5. Diagnose dropped frames and stream interruptions
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, lists several possible causes. Use the symptom as a starting point, not as proof of a single fault.
| What you notice | What to check and try |
|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Compare configured bitrate with stable available upload capacity. Reduce bitrate if capacity is insufficient or variable; include any concurrent backup load. |
| Problems while using Wi-Fi | Try wired Ethernet from the encoder computer to the router or switch. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer livestreaming, and OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible issue. |
| Connection worsens when others are online | Check for competing uploads on the shared network and retest under typical use. YouTube notes that other network users can limit the stream’s available bandwidth. |
| Unexplained connection instability | Review whether a VPN or network-optimization tool is interfering, and check network drivers and modem/router connectivity. OBS lists these among possible troubleshooting areas. |
| Encoder preview appears healthy but YouTube reports a poor feed | Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance: test outbound internet and contact your ISP if the connection test finds a problem. |
Change one factor at a time where possible, then repeat the test. That makes it easier to tell whether a bitrate adjustment, wired connection or network change actually helped.
6. Account for YouTube’s long-stream limits
Archives may not be captured for streams over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preserving a full recording matters, plan and verify local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive for a continuous stream. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable
YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may not be able to pause or rewind a continuous broadcast as they would a shorter stream. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving an encoder computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
