To stream through Wowza Video, first confirm the cloud service is available to your account, then create a live stream, connect a compatible camera or encoder, choose how Wowza processes the video, and share a hosted page or embed. One important caveat: Wowza’s documentation index currently describes the cloud-hosted service as legacy, so check account availability and regional support before planning a new deployment.
Check availability before building a workflow
Wowza’s documentation still describes how to configure Wowza Video, but its current documentation index labels the cloud-hosted service legacy. That does not establish that every account is unavailable; it does mean you should verify that your account can create a stream and that your intended region and features are supported before buying equipment or committing to an event. Wowza documentation index.
Create a live stream in Wowza Video
- Open Live streams. Choose Add new, then Go Live Now in the quick-start workflow.
- Name the stream. Use a title that will help you identify the event in the account.
- Choose a processing region. Select one near the physical source. Wowza recommends a nearby region to reduce network distance and latency; check that the features you need are available there.
- Select the input type. The setup documentation lists RTMP, RTSP, SRT, browser WebRTC, stream from file, UDP, IP camera, and Wowza Streaming Engine. Named encoders and cameras may use specialized connection steps.
- Decide whether you need a hosted page. If you want a Wowza-hosted viewing page, enable it during setup. Wowza’s setup guide says this option cannot be added after the live stream is created.
- Save the stream and retrieve its connection details. For protocol inputs such as RTMP, SRT, RTSP, or WebRTC, use the generated information shown in the stream details page. Follow the specific connection method for a named device.
These interface labels come from Wowza’s quick-start documentation, updated 2025-02-24. The detailed setup page was updated 2024-02-08; labels or account behavior may differ if the service has changed.
Connect your camera or encoder
RTMP, SRT, and other protocol inputs
Copy the generated server or connection details from the Wowza stream page into the matching destination fields in your encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone with valid connection credentials may be able to send video to that stream. Check the encoder’s documentation for where it expects the server URL, key, and any authentication information.

Wowza’s 2024-02-08 setup guide lists TCP port 1935 as the RTMP default and TCP port 554 as the RTSP default. If a source URL uses a non-default port, include it in the URL. Treat these as documented defaults, not a guarantee that a network, firewall, or current account accepts them; verify the actual connection details and firewall rules for your setup.
IP cameras
For the documented IP-camera workflow, the camera must support RTSP and H.264. Enter the camera’s source URL in Wowza, using the syntax supplied by the camera manufacturer; URL formats and any credentials vary by device. The guide does not recommend a particular camera model.

Test the feed before the event
- Confirm the camera or encoder is sending to the exact stream and region you configured.
- Check that the source codec and protocol match the selected input.
- Preview the output and confirm audio, framing, and playback before sharing the viewer link.
- If the source is behind a firewall or uses a non-default port, verify that the necessary traffic is permitted by your network policy.
Choose adaptive bitrate or passthrough
| Mode | What viewers receive | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive bitrate (ABR) | Wowza transcodes the source into multiple renditions at different sizes and bitrates, allowing playback to adapt to a viewer’s device and available bandwidth. | Rendition counts in the setup guide are configuration examples, not performance guarantees. For instance, Wowza’s 2024-02-08 guide specifies six bitrate renditions for a 1920 × 1080, 16:9 source and seven for a source up to 3840 × 2160. |
| Passthrough | A single output rendition retains the source characteristics without transcoding. | Wowza’s passthrough documentation says it requires a qualifying 24×7 subscription, is available only in selected regions, and does not support 4K. Confirm eligibility for the specific account and region. |
Choose ABR when viewers may have varied devices or network conditions and multiple playback renditions matter. Consider passthrough only when a single source rendition is appropriate and your subscription and region qualify. Neither mode removes the need to configure a compatible input and test the result.
Wowza describes SRT as “an open-source video transport protocol that is designed to deliver secure, high-quality, low-latency live streams over unpredictable network conditions.” This is the wording of its setup documentation, updated 2024-02-08, rather than an independent performance guarantee.

Share the stream with viewers
- Wowza-hosted page: Copy the hosted page URL and share it directly. This is the simplest option when viewers do not need to watch inside your own site.
- JavaScript embed: Copy the provided JavaScript embed code into the page where you want the player to appear.
- iFrame embed: Use the supplied iFrame code to place the player on your site through an embedded frame.
Wowza’s quick-start guide presents these three viewing choices. Plan for the hosted page before creating the stream, because the setup guide says it cannot be added afterward.
Stop the stream after the event
Wowza’s getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue for a started stream even when no source is actively sending video. It says idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes and recommends stopping the stream promptly when the event ends. The 20-minute figure is the guide’s stated behavior, not a substitute for checking current account terms. Do not assume an idle stream is free, and do not rely on automatic stopping as your normal shutdown procedure.

Use the REST API for an automated workflow
If you need code-driven stream creation and control rather than the dashboard workflow, Wowza’s developer quick start describes creating a WebRTC live stream with the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API, connecting a source, delivering to a Wowza-hosted player page, and starting and stopping the stream programmatically. This is an optional integration path; it is not required for a basic UI setup. Wowza Video 2.0 REST API WebRTC quick start.

The encoder cannot connect
- Recheck that the server URL and stream key were copied from the correct stream’s details page.
- Confirm that the encoder is configured for the input protocol selected in Wowza.
- For RTMP or RTSP, check the documented default ports (TCP 1935 and TCP 554 respectively), and include a non-default port in the source URL where applicable.
- Check firewall and network rules, as well as any authentication required by the source.
An IP camera feed is rejected or unavailable
- Confirm the camera supports both RTSP and H.264 for this workflow.
- Check the camera manual for the correct RTSP URL syntax, path, port, and credentials.
- Verify that the camera is reachable from the relevant network and that its stream is active.
The stream starts, but playback is not adapting as expected
- Check whether you selected ABR or passthrough. ABR generates multiple renditions; passthrough sends one source rendition.
- Verify the selected mode’s eligibility and feature availability for your account and region. Passthrough is not available everywhere and does not support 4K.
- Test playback on the intended devices and network conditions before the event.
You cannot find the hosted page option
Check whether the stream was created without enabling the hosted page. Wowza’s setup documentation says this option cannot be added after creation; confirm current account options with Wowza before relying on that workflow.

Unexpected transcoding charges continue after the source stops
Stop the stream in Wowza Video when the event is over. Wowza’s guide says a started stream may accrue transcoding charges without an active source, even though it also describes automatic stopping after 20 minutes of idleness.
When a YouTube channel needs to stay live between events
Wowza Video’s documented workflow is for configuring a live source, processing it, and delivering playback. For a different use case—keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded recordings in the cloud—StreamNeo is a separate option. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only; it is not a camera-broadcast service.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start a free day.
