Before you pay, verify the card’s identity, ask for photos of the actual copy, inspect both sides under bright light, and check the seller’s return terms. Bright-light translucency can flag a counterfeit, but no single visual test proves a card is genuine. For a graded card, verify the certification with the grading company and compare the record with the physical card and holder.
Confirm the card’s identity first
Search the official Pokémon card database using the card name and expansion, then compare the artwork, rarity, and printed details with the listing. Make sure you are checking the same version or printing: similar names and artwork can appear across different releases.
Ask for clear, current photos of the actual card’s front and back. A stock image can help identify the card, but it tells you nothing about the condition of the copy being sold. If the seller will not provide useful images, treat that as a reason to pause or walk away.
Screen for possible counterfeits
Hold the card to bright light
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to bright light, and recommends this as a way to identify a fake. Use it as a warning screen, not a definitive authentication test: translucency alone cannot establish whether a card is genuine. If you remain unsure, Pokémon recommends asking a nearby trading-card specialty shop to evaluate it. Read Pokémon Support’s guidance.

Weigh the listing context
Price and seller context can raise or lower concern, but neither proves authenticity. Pokémon warns that a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail price is a near-certain counterfeit warning and says flea markets account for its highest reported instances of counterfeit sales. That guidance concerns packs and reported counterfeit sales; it is not a risk estimate for an individual card.
Compare the asking price with recent sales for the same card, version, and condition using a separate market source. Pokémon says it does not track secondary-market prices or maintain a reseller list, so its card database is for identity—not price validation.

Inspect condition on both sides
Use bright, angled light and examine the front and back. Check for defects that photographs can hide, and request close-ups if a detail is unclear.
- Corners: look for whitening, rounding, bends, or damage.
- Edges: check for whitening, chips, wear, or uneven cuts.
- Surface: look for scratches, dents, creases, stains, print defects, and loss of gloss.
- Centering: compare the borders around the artwork and printed area; uneven borders may affect a grading assessment.
PSA’s grading standards consider factors including centering, scratches, dents, paper condition, and print quality. eBay’s condition guidance likewise organizes visible wear around corners, edges, and surface; its labels apply to that marketplace and should not be treated as universal grading definitions. A photo can conceal flaws, so do not infer a precise grade from a listing image.

Do not treat a visual check as a professional grade
A pre-purchase inspection can help you describe visible condition, but it cannot promise how a grader will score the card. PSA describes a PSA 10 as virtually perfect, with four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus, and full original gloss; its stated centering tolerance for that grade is approximately 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. Those are PSA-specific standards, not a universal definition of “near mint” or a guarantee of a future grade.
PSA also notes that eye appeal and some borderline judgments can be subjective. Centering alone does not determine a grade. Its standards identify suspected trimming, recoloring, restoration, tampering, or questionable authenticity as reasons a card may not receive an ordinary numeric grade. See PSA’s grading standards.

For a graded card, verify the certification and holder
- Find the grading company’s official certification lookup; for PSA, use its certification verification tool.
- Compare the lookup’s card details and grade with the label and card in the listing photos.
- Inspect the holder and label for cracks, damage, or signs of possible tampering. Ask for clear photos from multiple angles if needed.
- Review the grading company’s guarantee terms and the seller’s return policy before paying.
A matching lookup is useful evidence, not proof that a physical holder could not have been altered. PSA’s guarantee applies to PSA-graded cards under PSA’s stated terms; it is not a blanket guarantee for every slab or transaction. Read PSA’s guarantee terms.

- Proceed cautiously when the card identity matches, the seller provides actual-card photos, condition is visible, and the price and return terms make sense.
- Seek another check when authenticity remains uncertain or the purchase is high-value. Pokémon recommends a specialty card shop; marketplace authentication may also be available for eligible listings.
- Walk away if the seller refuses reasonable photos, key details do not match, the holder appears damaged or altered, or you cannot resolve a concern before payment.
eBay says its authentication service checks eligible ungraded cards for authenticity and whether they match the listing description. Availability depends on the specific listing and current program terms, so verify eligibility on the transaction rather than assuming every card is covered. After inspection, store the card in a sleeve to reduce handling and surface wear. Pokémon Organized Play recommends opaque-backed sleeves because clear sleeves may expose imperfections on the card back; sleeve choice does not authenticate a card or establish its grade.
