How to Check Pokémon Card Prices Before Buying or Selling

Check a Pokémon card's set, number, printing, language, and condition, then compare recent completed sales for equivalent copies.

To estimate what a Pokémon card is worth, identify the exact printing and condition, then compare recent completed sales for equivalent copies. Active listings show what sellers are asking—not what buyers have paid—and no single price guide establishes a universal value.

What details identify the exact card?

A card name alone is not enough. Before checking prices, note:

  • Card name and collector number.
  • Set and language.
  • Printing or foil variant, such as holo or reverse holo.
  • Whether the card is raw (not professionally graded) or graded; for a graded card, record the grading company and grade.

Match these details when searching. A standard holo and reverse holo, or a raw card and graded card, are different comparisons. eBay says its Price Guide matches an identified card and, where available, its grade; TCGplayer’s product page prices depend on selected printing and condition filters. eBay Price Guide; TCGplayer price-point definitions.

How should you check a raw card’s condition?

Inspect the front and back in clear light. Look for edgewear, whitening, creases, scratches, dents, and other surface wear. Use a condition-filtered price only when the card reasonably matches that condition category; a market figure for one condition does not establish the value of every copy.

TCGplayer’s condition guide says a crease makes a card Moderately Played at best and explains how edgewear and surface wear factor into condition. TCGplayer’s card-condition guide.

Where can you find prices buyers actually paid?

TCGplayer Market Price and Most Recent Sale

TCGplayer Market Price is compiled from recent completed sales on its marketplace and updates as transactions complete. Its Most Recent Sale figure reflects the selected product-page filters, including condition and card version. These are useful references for matching copies, but they represent TCGplayer activity—not every marketplace or regional market. TCGplayer Market Price; TCGplayer price-point definitions.

eBay completed sales and Price Guide

eBay’s Price Guide uses completed eBay sales, matches the card and available grade, and accounts for accepted Best Offer prices rather than relying only on the original asking amount. Its FAQ says data updates every 24 hours, so prices may not reflect real-time changes. The guide offers up to two years of completed transaction history and is currently available only in the US. eBay Price Guide and FAQ.

Active listings are asking prices

TCGplayer’s Listed Median is based on current listings, while Market Price is based on completed sales. The two can differ because a seller’s ask does not prove that a buyer will pay that amount. If you cite an active listing, describe it as an asking price, not a sale price. TCGplayer price-point definitions.

How do you compare prices fairly?

When enough sales exist, use at least two relevant views—for example, a condition-filtered marketplace metric and matched eBay sold comparables. Align the following before drawing a conclusion:

  • Card name, number, set, printing, and language.
  • Raw or graded status; for graded cards, the same grading company and grade where possible.
  • Condition for raw copies.
  • Sale period, marketplace, currency, and shipping context.
  • Number of comparable transactions. A single unusual sale is weaker evidence than a pattern of similar sales.

TCGplayer’s 30-day price-volatility metric uses sales volume and price dispersion, and may be indeterminate when volume is insufficient. Sparse sales are a reason to describe uncertainty, not to claim a precise market value. TCGplayer price-point definitions.

How should you state an estimate before buying or selling?

Describe a recent range or central tendency from comparable completed sales, and say how many comparables you used and when you checked them. Name the marketplace and currency, and specify the card’s printing and condition or grade. That makes clear what the estimate does—and does not—apply to.

There is no universal official Pokémon card price established by these tools: eBay and TCGplayer report figures from their own transaction datasets and filters. For a purchase or sale outside the US, use a suitable local marketplace and currency; eBay says its Price Guide is US-only, and a regional alternative should be verified before relying on it. eBay Price Guide and FAQ; TCGplayer Market Price; TCGplayer price-point definitions.
