How to Check Proton Compatibility Before Installing a Steam Game

Check Valve’s Steam Deck badge, then compare recent ProtonDB reports for your platform, hardware, Proton version, and any required fixes.

Before downloading a Steam game for Steam Deck or Linux, check its Steam Deck compatibility details, then compare recent player reports on ProtonDB. Valve’s badge describes the expected experience on Steam Deck; ProtonDB reports show how specific games have worked for other Linux and Deck players. Neither is a universal guarantee for every PC or configuration.

Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility badge

  1. Find the exact Steam game entry. Search the title in the Steam Store or Library and make sure you have the right game or edition. Different entries may have different builds and player reports.
  2. Read the compatibility label. On Steam Deck, look on the game’s Store page or Library entry. Open its compatibility details to see the reasons behind the result when they are available. Valve uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page explains the program.

What the labels mean

  • Verified: The game met Valve’s review criteria for Steam Deck.
  • Playable: The game can be played, but caveats may apply. Check the details for issues or configuration steps.
  • Unsupported: Valve found that the game does not meet the expected Steam Deck experience.
  • Unknown: Valve has not tested the game for compatibility. This is not evidence that it fails.

Valve’s review considers input and controller behavior, display and legibility, how seamless the experience is, and system support. For games that use Proton, the criteria also include support for the game and its middleware through Proton. A label therefore says more than whether the game launches, and it describes the Deck experience—not a verdict on every desktop Linux setup. See Steam Support’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide for more detail.

Check recent ProtonDB reports for real-world experience

Search the game on ProtonDB, a community site collecting Linux and Steam Deck experiences with Proton. You can also go directly to a game’s page using its Steam app ID in this format: https://www.protondb.com/app/<appid>, a URL pattern documented in the Proton community compatibility reports wiki.

Read individual reports rather than relying only on an aggregate rating. Give more weight to reports that are recent and describe the setup, Proton version, whether the game launched and played normally, and any workaround. An older successful report may no longer match the game after updates.

  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Compare reports that match your setup

When reports disagree, compare the details that can explain the difference:

  • Platform: Separate Steam Deck results from desktop Linux results. Hardware and Linux distribution can matter.
  • Recency: Check when the report was filed and whether the game has had a meaningful update since then.
  • Compatibility tool: Look for the Proton version or other tool used.
  • Severity: Distinguish a game that will not launch from one with a broken online feature or a minor visual or input issue.
  • Work required: Note whether it worked by default or needed settings, launch options, or another workaround—and whether you are willing to use that fix.

These are practical ways to judge player reports, not official ProtonDB scoring criteria. A community result is evidence about one configuration, not a promise that the same result will occur on yours.

What to do if you need to try a different Proton version

Steam’s per-game compatibility setting is a troubleshooting option for an installed game, not a compatibility certification. In Steam, open Library > select the game > Properties > Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose a listed tool. Steam Support notes that forcing a tool can make Steam download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed, so check which build Steam selects.

How much confidence should you place in a result?

Use the Steam badge for Valve’s assessed Steam Deck experience and ProtonDB for reports from players using particular systems. If the title is Unknown on Steam, ProtonDB may still have useful community observations. If it is Playable, inspect the caveats rather than assuming it will work exactly as you want. Results can change as games, middleware, Proton, and SteamOS are updated; Valve describes ongoing work to improve the device and keep ratings current, but does not establish a fixed re-review schedule on the cited pages.
