Check the LED above the Steam button. Its color shows the connection route, while a breathing or pulsing pattern indicates charging. Valve’s official guidance documents charging and low-battery warnings, but not a precise battery-percentage display.
How to tell whether your Steam Controller is charging
Look at the LED above the Steam button and check both its color and pattern. Valve maps the colors to connection routes: white for the Steam Controller Puck, blue for Bluetooth, and green for USB. A breathing or pulsing light in one of those colors means the controller is charging through that route. A solid white, blue, or green light indicates the connection is working, but the controller is not charging.

| Green breathing or pulsing | Charging over USB. |
| Orange breathing or pulsing | The controller is not communicating for input, but is charging and is not yet full. Charging may be through USB or the Puck. |
| Solid white, blue, or green | The corresponding connection is working; the controller is not charging. |
| Dark red, solid | Low-battery warning: less than one hour of battery remains. |
| Dark red, double pulse | The battery is too low to power on. |

How to check how much battery is left
The documented indicator gives a low-battery warning, not a numeric charge level. Valve says a solid dark-red LED means less than one hour remains; a dark-red double pulse means the battery is too low for the controller to power on. The official references cited here do not document an exact percentage display or a universal on-screen location for one, so do not treat LED color or brightness as a battery gauge.

What orange means
An orange breathing or pulsing light means the controller is disconnected for input but is still charging; it is not yet full. A localized official Steam reference also describes solid orange when the controller is off and fully charged, but that state is not in the English LED reference cited above. Treat that particular interpretation as unconfirmed for the current English documentation.
