The 2026 Steam Controller charges magnetically through the Steam Controller Puck, which also works as a wireless transmitter. Connect the puck to your PC by USB-C, open Steam with no game running, and place the controller on the puck to charge and manually pair it. If you have the original 2015 Steam Controller, its included dock is for extending the wireless dongle—not for charging.
First, identify which Steam Controller you have
Valve’s current 2026 Steam Controller has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and uses the magnetic Steam Controller Puck as its charging interface. The original 2015 Steam Controller instead uses two AA batteries and came with a wireless pairing dongle and a dock that extends that dongle’s connection. The two accessories have different jobs, so check the controller generation before following setup steps.

How to connect the Steam Controller Puck and charge
- Connect the puck to your PC with a USB-C cable.
- Make sure Steam is open and no game is running.
- Place the controller on the puck. This is Valve’s manual-pairing procedure, and the puck also provides the magnetic charging connection. Follow the Valve Steam Support setup guide if you need its on-screen instructions.
Valve describes USB-C tethered play as another connection option. Its current product page lists an 8.39 Wh battery and 35+ hours of gameplay, with a note that some specifications may change ahead of availability; it does not establish a charging-time figure. Valve product page

How to tell whether the controller is charging
- Breathing white LED: When connected to the puck, this indicates the controller is charging.
- Breathing orange LED: The controller is not connected but is charging. Valve says this indication turns off when charging is complete.
These indicators are described in Valve’s support reference.

Use the original 2015 dongle dock only with the older controller
The 2015 dock is an extension for the controller’s wireless pairing dongle. The quick-start guide shows connecting that adapter directly to a host or placing it in the dock, and separately shows installing the controller’s AA batteries. It is not a charging stand. Use the 2015 Steam Controller quick-start guide only for that model.
Charging puck safety and care
- Keep metallic objects away from both the puck and controller before connecting them; each contains a magnet.
- Do not charge or use the controller if it gets wet. Valve says the controller is not water resistant.
- Do not use damaged cables or components. The puck is designed to separate from the controller if pulled hard enough; do not try to prevent that separation.
- Keep the controller within Valve’s stated operating range of 32°F–95°F (0°C–35°C) and storage range of -4°F–140°F (-20°C–60°C).
