Open Steam, select the game in your Library, and read the accumulated hours shown on its title page. You can also open your profile’s Games list. Before requesting a refund, record those hours, verify the purchase date in your account history or receipt, and then use Steam Support’s purchase flow. Steam evaluates the recorded total for the account, including online, offline, and shared-library playtime.
What Steam playtime tells you before a refund request
The hours displayed by Steam are the playtime associated with your account for that title. They are the figure you should check before submitting a refund request, not a stopwatch reading from your latest session. Steam’s standard refund test considers two separate facts:

- How long ago the purchase was made.
- How much recorded playtime the title has accumulated.
Both matter. A game with a low hour count can still fall outside the normal window if it was purchased too long ago. Conversely, a recent purchase can lose the standard eligibility guarantee once the recorded total reaches the limit.

Method 1: Check hours from the Steam Library
The Library view is usually the fastest option because it keeps the game and its accumulated time together.
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Choose the game you may want to return.
- On the game’s title page, look near the game controls and ownership information for the account’s accumulated playtime.
- Write down the displayed hours before starting the game, downloading additional content, or opening it through a shortcut.
The number is a total for that Steam account and title. It is not limited to the current computer or the current installation. If you have played on another computer, the relevant account history is still the figure to consider.
Method 2: Check the profile’s Games list
Your profile provides a second route that is useful when you are already reviewing several games or cannot immediately find the title in the Library layout.
- Open your Steam profile.
- Select Games to view the titles associated with the account.
- Find the game in the list and read the playtime shown beside it.
- Record the value without launching the title.
This view is still account-specific, so it should be read as a record of the same Steam account rather than as a per-device measurement. If the profile is private or the game list is filtered, return to the Library page and use that display instead.
Which checking method should you use?

Neither screen replaces the other refund requirement. The hours answer only the playtime part of the decision; you still need the purchase date.
Verify the purchase date
Check the date against Steam’s transaction record rather than relying on when you first installed the game. Installation, first launch, and purchase are different events.

- Open your Steam account’s purchase history or locate the receipt email for the transaction.
- Identify the exact game and the date attached to that purchase.
- Use the original purchase date when judging the standard refund window. A later installation or reinstall does not restart it.
If the game was acquired in a bundle, through a gift, or from a shared library, make sure you are looking at the transaction connected with the account that would submit the request. Keep the receipt available if Steam asks you to identify the purchase.
Steam’s standard refund conditions
Valve states that it will issue a refund when a title is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than two hours. The two-hour figure includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime. Offline use does not create a separate counter that can be excluded from the calculation.

“Less than two hours” means the displayed total must remain below two hours. Treat the boundary conservatively: if Steam shows two hours or more, do not assume the standard guarantee still applies.
Submit the request through Steam Support
Once you have recorded the hours and confirmed the transaction date, submit the request through Steam’s support site:
- Go to help.steampowered.com and sign in to the account that owns the purchase.
- Open the purchase-support flow and select the relevant transaction or game.
- Choose the refund option offered for that purchase.
- Select the available refund destination and briefly explain why you are requesting the refund.
- Review the details and submit the request.
A short, accurate explanation is sufficient when the request is within the normal conditions. If the title is outside the time or playtime limits, describe the circumstances clearly and ask Steam to review it manually rather than presenting the request as automatically eligible.

You can still submit a request when either standard condition is missed. Steam may review exceptional circumstances, but the normal eligibility guarantee no longer applies, so no outcome should be promised.

Over the playtime limit
State why the recorded total does not represent ordinary use if that is the case. For example, explain an extended troubleshooting session, a launcher that kept the game running, or another specific circumstance. Do not omit the displayed total or claim that offline or shared-library time should be ignored; Steam counts those categories.
Outside the purchase window
Give the purchase date and explain the reason for the late request. A manual review is discretionary, and submitting a request does not extend the standard 14-day period.
Over both limits
Provide the clearest factual account you can, including the transaction and the recorded hours. Steam Support decides whether the circumstances justify an exception.

How shared, offline, and multi-device play affects the number
Shared-library play
Steam includes shared-library playtime in the two-hour total. If someone used your library, or you played a title shared by another account, that time can affect the refund assessment connected with the purchase. Check which account made the purchase and which account’s hours are displayed before submitting anything.
Offline play
Playing while offline does not create a second, exempt counter. Offline use is part of the playtime Steam considers. Do not subtract offline sessions from the displayed total when deciding whether you are below two hours.
Different computers
Moving between a desktop, laptop, or another supported computer does not make each installation a separate refund allowance. The relevant question is the account’s accumulated record for the title.

If the displayed hours seem wrong
First, stop launching the game and capture the information you currently see. Then check the following before contacting support:

- Compare the Library title page with the profile Games list.
- Consider whether another person used the title through library sharing.
- Include offline sessions in your own estimate instead of treating them as separate.
- Check the receipt or purchase history for the exact transaction and date.
If the two Steam views or your transaction record do not appear to line up, explain the discrepancy in the support request and ask Steam to review the account record. Do not create a second purchase or repeatedly launch the game as a way to test the counter.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- Game title matches the purchase you intend to return.
- Playtime was recorded before your latest session, with no extra launch afterward.
- Displayed hours are noted from the Library page or profile Games list.
- Online, offline, and shared-library sessions have all been considered.
- Purchase date comes from Steam purchase history or the receipt.
- The request is being filed from the purchasing account.
- Your explanation is factual, especially if either standard condition is missed.
EU and UK consumer rights
Steam’s 14-day and two-hour test is its standard voluntary refund policy. Readers in the European Union or United Kingdom may also have statutory consumer rights under local law. The result can depend on the country, the transaction, the type of digital content, and what happened when access began. Those rights are separate from Steam’s ordinary policy, so a reader who believes local law applies should describe that basis to Steam Support and obtain independent consumer-law advice where necessary.

Checking only the hours
A low playtime number does not by itself establish eligibility. Always pair it with the transaction date.
Launching the game to check one last thing
That session can increase the recorded total. Gather screenshots, settings, or other evidence without opening the title again whenever possible.

Steam’s stated rule includes offline play. Treat it as part of the total.

Assuming a manual review is an entitlement
Steam can review requests outside the standard conditions, but approval is discretionary. Explain the facts without promising yourself a particular result.
Using the wrong account
The support flow must identify the purchase connected to the account submitting the request. Sign in first and verify the transaction before choosing a game.
Examples of how to interpret your result
Recent purchase with 45 minutes recorded
The purchase is within the standard time window and the displayed total is below two hours. Submit the request through Steam Support while avoiding any additional play.
Recent purchase with 2 hours 10 minutes recorded
The title is outside the standard playtime condition. You may still submit a request and explain the circumstances, but Steam’s automatic guarantee does not apply.
Old purchase with 30 minutes recorded
The low total does not restore the expired time window. A request can be submitted for review, but approval is discretionary.
Shared title with a short personal session
Your own session is not the only figure that matters if the title was used through library sharing. Shared-library playtime is included in Steam’s total.
Bottom line for checking before you click “Request a refund”
Read the title’s recorded hours in Steam, verify the original purchase date, and stop playing before you submit. If both standard conditions appear satisfied, use the purchase-support flow at help.steampowered.com. If either condition is missed, you can still ask Steam to review the case, but the result is not guaranteed.
