If Steam reports no broad service issue, narrow the cause by checking whether the problem affects one game server or all Steam connections, then test your network path, firewall, other software and any network restrictions.
Check whether Steam is having a broader outage
Open Steam Support’s network troubleshooting guide and follow its link to the Steam Server Status page. The status page is a snapshot: check it when the problem occurs, and check again later if Steam services appear unavailable. Steam says timeouts when accessing its sites can indicate a system-wide issue; if so, local settings changes may not help until Steam resolves it.

If you see “The Steam Servers are currently unavailable. Please try again later” or “The Steam Servers are too busy,” Steam’s support article for these errors also directs users to check the network status page.

Find out whether the problem is one game server or all of Steam
“Error: Server Verification Failed” on one server
Try connecting to several other game servers. Steam says that if another server works, the server that reported the error is the likely source of the problem.

No game servers work
Check the Steam status page, confirm that the client is not set to Offline, and see whether Steam Friends reports a lost connection. Steam’s game-server connection guidance recommends checking more than one server before treating the issue as a client-wide or network problem.
Test your local network connection
Restart the modem and router
Power-cycle your modem and router, then reopen Steam and test again. If the modem and router are separate, Steam recommends closing the client and connecting the computer directly to the modem, bypassing the router. Confirm that internet access works, restart Steam, and test. If the direct connection works but the router connection does not, router configuration or compatibility is a likely factor; this test does not by itself identify the exact setting.

Compare Wi-Fi or powerline with Ethernet
When possible, test Steam over a wired Ethernet connection. Steam Support puts it simply: “If possible, test Steam with a direct wired connection to determine if this is a problem.” Wi-Fi and powerline connections can fail intermittently because of interference, so a wired test helps isolate the network link rather than proving Steam is at fault.
On Steam Deck, Steam’s network and download troubleshooting guide suggests trying another available Wi-Fi band—6 GHz, 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz—and checking for router channel congestion. A USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter may be needed to test a wired connection; check compatibility with your device. If you have changed DNS settings, reverting those custom settings is another diagnostic step for poor download speeds.

Check firewall permissions and interfering software
A firewall may block Steam after a first installation or a client update, even if Steam previously connected. Steam’s firewall troubleshooting instructions recommend refreshing the permissions for Steam executables so the firewall can apply current rules. Restart Steam after updating the permissions.
Turning off a firewall briefly can help isolate whether it is involved, but use that only as a diagnostic test: turn it back on immediately and correct the rules. Do not leave your firewall disabled. If connection trouble continues, review background applications and other software that could interfere; follow the security software maker’s instructions rather than removing security tools indiscriminately. Steam also recommends considering malware or spyware when network troubleshooting has not resolved the issue.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Account for required ports and restricted networks
Steam publishes separate TCP and UDP port requirements for sign-in, downloads, gameplay, Remote Play, dedicated servers, and Steamworks peer-to-peer and voice features in its network and firewall guidance. School, university and workplace networks, as well as proxies, may block ports Steam needs. If you are on a managed network, ask its administrator whether Steam connections are allowed. Steam notes that these requirements cannot simply be moved to HTTP or an arbitrary custom port range.
Fix “The Steam Servers are too busy” and related messages
For “The Steam Servers are currently unavailable” or “The Steam Servers are too busy,” try a different Download Region that is still relatively close to you. Steam provides the steps and further troubleshooting in its support article for server availability errors.
If changing the region does not help, Steam lists possible causes including interfering programs, corrupted Steam files, firewall or antivirus settings, router or internet problems, and a Steam network issue. Its file-repair instructions differ between Windows and macOS, and removing files can affect mods or custom content, so follow the current platform-specific instructions on the support page rather than deleting files based on a generic recipe.
Tell a slow download from a slow internet connection
A low speed shown during a Steam download does not, by itself, prove that your internet connection is slow. Steam says installing a game can use substantial CPU and disk resources, and the client may throttle the download to match the system’s installation work. Storage write speed—including an SD card’s write speed—can also affect how long the full download-and-install process takes. If the network itself seems unreliable, test Steam on another connection or compare a wired link with Wi-Fi.
Quick Recap
Use the timing and location of the failure to decide what to do next
- It happens only at certain hours: Steam says ISP blocking or traffic shaping is possible. Test at other times; if the pattern persists, contact your internet provider.
- Steam works on another network: The router, ISP, proxy or managed-network policy on the original connection becomes more likely than a general Steam outage.
- Only one game server fails: Try other servers before changing firewall or router settings; the affected server may be the issue.
- Only downloads seem slow: Consider installation load and storage write speed as well as the network connection.
