Use vnStat when you need a dated history of bandwidth usage, including the current month and previous months. For an immediate cumulative snapshot, use the Linux kernel counters exposed by ip:
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
ip -s -s link show dev <interface>
That command reports received (RX) and transmitted (TX) bytes for one network interface. Add RX and TX to get the guest-interface total. This is not automatically the same as a hosting provider’s billable transfer: providers can use different reset dates, direction rules, overhead treatment or exclusions. Use the provider’s current bandwidth policy and dashboard as the billing authority, and use the VPS measurements to diagnose and explain traffic.

What “total bandwidth” means on a VPS
There are two useful meanings of total usage:
- Guest-interface total: RX (bytes received by the VPS) plus TX (bytes transmitted by the VPS), as reported by Linux or vnStat.
- Billable transfer: the amount a hosting provider counts under its own bandwidth policy and billing period.
Linux can show the traffic seen by an interface, but it cannot tell you which packets a provider excludes, how the provider handles protocol overhead, or when the provider’s accounting period resets. A local total is therefore excellent for capacity planning, investigating a spike and checking whether a service is unusually busy. It is not a promise that your invoice or provider dashboard will contain the same number.
Before comparing numbers, write down the period you are comparing, the interface, whether you are adding RX and TX, and the unit displayed. A monthly provider figure may cover a different date range from the calendar month shown by vnStat.

Choose the right measurement method

Current cumulative RX and TX byte counters | A quick snapshot or a before-and-after measurement | It is a raw counter view, not a dated monthly history |
vnstat |
Stored five-minute, hourly, daily, monthly and yearly traffic buckets, with RX, TX and total fields | Checking this month’s usage and retaining history | History starts only after vnStat has been installed and initialized for the interface |
vnstat -tr |
A short real-time sample with traffic rates and packet counts | Finding what is generating traffic right now | It is a live sample and does not replace historical accounting |
| Provider dashboard | The provider’s own accounting result | Checking an allowance, limit or bill | Its definitions and reset period may differ from guest-interface counters |
Step 1: Find the VPS network interface
Commands must target the interface that carries the VPS’s traffic. Names vary by image and provider; common examples include eth0, ens3 and ens4, but your server may use another name.
List the interfaces with the networking tools already installed on the system. On systems using iproute2, this displays the local link list:
ip link show
Look for the interface that is up and carries the server’s normal network connection. Do not assume that the first name you remember from another VPS is valid here. If the machine has several interfaces, check each candidate rather than silently measuring an unused or internal link.
Once you know the name, substitute it for every occurrence of <interface> below. For example, if the actual name is ens3, the immediate-counter command becomes:
ip -s -s link show dev ens3
Step 2: Read the Linux cumulative counters
Run:
ip -s -s link show dev <interface>
The statistics section contains separate byte counts for received traffic (RX) and transmitted traffic (TX). RX represents traffic arriving at the VPS through that interface; TX represents traffic leaving it. Add the two byte values when you need a guest-interface total.
Taking a useful snapshot
- Record the date and time.
- Record the interface name.
- Copy the RX byte count and the TX byte count exactly as displayed.
- Add RX and TX if you need one combined total, or retain both values when upload and download must be reported separately.
- Repeat the command later and compare the two snapshots to estimate traffic between the measurements.
These counters are cumulative interface statistics. They are useful for a current state, but the command does not label traffic by calendar month and does not create a historical database for you. For recurring monthly checks, use vnStat instead.

Step 3: Install and initialize vnStat
Install vnStat with the package manager supplied by your VPS distribution. Package names, service activation and initialization behavior differ between distributions, so follow the package’s instructions for your operating system rather than copying a command intended for a different release.
- Install the vnStat package using the distribution’s normal package-management process.
- Make sure the vnStat service or collection process is enabled according to that distribution’s instructions.
- Initialize monitoring for the interface you identified. If the package asks you to select an interface, choose the one carrying normal VPS traffic.
- Allow the collector to gather data before treating its history as a complete month. Data cannot be reconstructed for the period before collection began.
vnStat reads Linux proc or sys interface statistics and stores the observations for later queries. It is designed to use light resources while retaining multiple time resolutions. If your installation exposes a status or database command, use it to confirm that the selected interface is being collected before relying on the monthly line.
Step 4: Query vnStat history
Default summary
Run:
vnstat
This requests the historical summary for vnStat’s selected interface. When no interface is specified, vnStat can default to the interface with the highest total traffic. That convenience is not always what you want on a multi-interface VPS, so verify the interface shown in the output.
Explicit interface
For an unambiguous result, name the interface:
vnstat -i <interface>
An explicit interface prevents a busy private, tunnel or secondary link from being mistaken for the public interface whose usage you intended to check.
Script-friendly one-line output
Where supported by the installed vnStat version, use:
vnstat --oneline
The documented one-line fields include today’s RX, TX and total; the current month’s RX, TX and total; and all-time RX, TX and total. This format is useful when a monitoring script needs stable, compact fields, but always confirm the exact field order in the version installed on your VPS before parsing it automatically.

How to read the monthly total
vnStat separates received, transmitted and combined values. In the monthly section:
- RX is inbound traffic recorded for the interface.
- TX is outbound traffic recorded for the interface.
- Total is the combined RX and TX value reported by vnStat.
Use the row for the current month when the question is “How much have I used this month?” Check the month and year printed beside the row; do not copy a number without confirming that it belongs to the period you intend to report. The current-month number grows as new traffic is collected, while a completed month remains a historical bucket.

Use the daily view to locate the date of a spike, the hourly view to narrow its time, and the five-minute view when you need a fine-grained sequence around an event. Yearly history helps reveal seasonal or campaign-related changes without reducing everything to one all-time counter.
See traffic as it happens
When a total rises unexpectedly, run:
vnstat -tr
vnStat’s real-time mode samples current traffic and reports rates and packet counts. It works without relying on the historical database, so it can still help when you are investigating an immediate burst before the stored history has been reviewed.
Use the live sample as a diagnostic
- Start
vnstat -trwhile the spike is occurring. - Note whether the rate is predominantly RX, TX or balanced.
- Compare the observed direction with the services active on the VPS, such as downloads, uploads, backups or game-server traffic.
- After the event, use vnStat’s daily or hourly history to establish when the increase occurred and how much it contributed to the period total.
The live command tells you what is moving during its sample. It does not rewrite earlier buckets or establish the provider’s billable amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet a monthly threshold
vnStat supports comparing RX, TX, total or estimated usage with limits. Threshold units include MiB, GiB and TiB. A threshold is useful when you want an early warning before approaching an allowance, but configure it around the provider’s documented accounting definition and reset date.

Choose the value to monitor
- Choose total when the allowance counts both directions together.
- Choose RX when the relevant limit is inbound traffic only.
- Choose TX when the relevant limit is outbound traffic only.
- Use an estimated value only when you understand how vnStat derives the estimate and how that estimate relates to your allowance.
Match the unit to the policy. A limit stated in GiB should not be entered or interpreted as if it were decimal GB. Also match the calendar or provider reset date; a threshold tied to the first day of each calendar month can give a misleading warning if the provider starts its period on another date.
Why local and provider numbers can differ
A provider may count traffic using rules that are not visible inside the guest. Differences can arise from the provider’s reset period, whether it counts one direction or both, how it treats overhead, and which traffic classes it excludes. The VPS can therefore show a technically correct interface total while the dashboard shows a different billable figure.
When numbers disagree, compare the following items in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Period: confirm the exact start and end timestamps for both readings.
- Interface: verify that vnStat and
ipmeasured the interface carrying the traffic represented by the provider report. - Directions: compare RX, TX and total separately instead of comparing one combined number immediately.
- Units: check whether each display uses bytes, MiB, GiB or another unit convention.
- Policy: read the provider’s current bandwidth definition for exclusions, overhead and reset rules.
Do not change the local measurement to force a match. Keep the guest-interface figures as diagnostic evidence and use the provider’s policy and dashboard for allowance or billing decisions.

The interface name does not work
If ip -s -s link show dev <interface> reports that the device is missing, run ip link show again and copy the exact name, including letters and numbers. Provider-assigned names can differ between images or after a migration.
vnStat shows no useful history
Check that vnStat was installed, its collection process was activated, and the correct interface was initialized. A new database cannot contain traffic from before collection began. Wait for observations to accumulate, then query the explicitly named interface with vnstat -i <interface>.

The default vnStat result is for the wrong link
Omitting -i allows vnStat to select the interface with the highest total traffic. On a VPS with several links, specify the intended interface every time and verify the interface label in the output.

The monthly number looks lower than expected
Check whether collection started partway through the month, whether the traffic used another interface, and whether you are reading RX, TX or total. Then compare the same period and direction with the provider’s dashboard.
A spike is visible but its cause is unclear
Run vnstat -tr during the event to see the current direction and rate. Use daily, hourly and five-minute history to establish the time window, then inspect the applications or transfers active on the VPS during that window.
A repeatable monthly workflow
- Identify the public traffic interface with
ip link show. - Take an immediate baseline with
ip -s -s link show dev <interface>, recording RX and TX. - Query
vnstat -i <interface>and confirm that the database is collecting the same interface. - At the reporting date, read the current-month RX, TX and total fields.
- Record the period, interface, directions and units alongside the values.
- Compare the result with the provider’s allowance period and accounting definition.
- If the result is unexpected, use daily, hourly, five-minute and real-time views to investigate rather than relying on one all-time counter.
This workflow gives you both kinds of evidence: a kernel-level snapshot for the current state and a persistent vnStat history for period-based analysis.
Practical interpretation for uploads and downloads
If you need separate upload and download totals, report TX and RX independently. In ordinary interface terminology, RX is traffic received by the VPS and TX is traffic transmitted by it. For a combined figure, use vnStat’s total field or add the two byte counters from ip.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor example, a download-heavy workload should appear primarily in RX, while a server sending large files, backups or streams should increase TX. A game server, API or proxy can increase both directions, so looking only at one side can understate activity. Keep the directional values in your notes even when an allowance is expressed as one combined number; they make later troubleshooting much easier.
What each command can and cannot answer
| Question | Command or source | Answer you can trust it for | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| What are the interface counters right now? | ip -s -s link show dev <interface> |
Current cumulative RX and TX bytes | A calendar-month total or provider bill |
| How much has this interface used this month? | vnstat -i <interface> |
Stored monthly RX, TX and total for the collected period | Traffic from before vnStat began collecting |
| Which direction is busy now? | vnstat -tr |
Sampled rates and packet counts during the live run | The cause of the traffic or the final monthly amount |
| What amount is subject to an allowance or charge? | Provider dashboard and policy | The provider’s own accounting result | That its definitions match guest-interface totals |
Keeping measurements defensible
Use the same interface and method for successive comparisons. Preserve the raw RX and TX values, not only a rounded combined number. Note whether a value came from the current-month row, an all-time row, a live sample or a kernel snapshot. When sharing a report, include the command, interface, timestamp and unit so another administrator can reproduce the reading.
For automated checks, vnstat --oneline can provide compact daily, monthly and all-time fields where that option is supported by the installed version. Validate the field order before putting it into a parser, and keep the provider’s reset date separate from the operating system’s calendar-based output.
