Check YouTube’s Live Streaming API first: for the stream bound to your broadcast, status.streamStatus=active means YouTube reports receiving encoder data. Then inspect stream health, the broadcast’s separate status, the VPS encoder and logs, and public playback. No single one of those checks proves all the others: an active feed does not guarantee viewers see changing frames, and a running VPS process does not prove YouTube received its output.
Check YouTube’s receipt status first
A YouTube liveStream represents the incoming audio-video feed. Its status.streamStatus is the clearest documented signal for whether YouTube is receiving data from the encoder. Find the stream bound to the broadcast, then inspect this field in the YouTube Live Streaming API under the Google Account that owns the channel. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide explicitly says to confirm that the bound stream’s status is active before transitioning a broadcast to live.
active: YouTube reports receiving data through the stream.inactive: YouTube reports it is not receiving data through the stream.ready: valid CDN settings are configured; this does not mean video is currently arriving.createdorerror: these are other documented states. If you see an error, inspect the reported status and investigate the encoder destination, stream key, and network path.
These definitions are documented in the LiveStreams API reference. Treat active as evidence of YouTube receipt, not proof that every viewer gets playback or that the picture is changing.
Read stream health and configuration issues
While checking the stream resource, inspect status.healthStatus and any configurationIssues. YouTube reports issue type, severity, reason, and description where applicable; use those details to direct troubleshooting instead of relying only on the overall label.

good: no configuration issue has warning severity or worse.ok: no configuration issue has error severity.bad: the stream has an error-severity issue.noData: YouTube’s backend has no health information for the stream. This alone does not show that the encoder stopped.
The status definitions are in Google’s LiveStreams documentation. A healthy status and receipt status answer different questions: record both, including any listed issue descriptions.
Confirm that the broadcast itself is live
A liveBroadcast is the event or video viewers watch; a liveStream is the feed sent into it. An active stream can therefore coexist with a broadcast that has not yet been made live. The API resources expose these different states, as explained in YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams.

- Identify the intended broadcast and the stream bound to it using the channel owner’s authorized account.
- Confirm the bound stream’s
status.streamStatusisactive. - Read the broadcast’s own
status. If it is not live, check whether it is awaiting a manual transition, configured for auto-start, or still changing state. - If a transition was just requested, poll the broadcast status while it completes. YouTube says transitions typically take 5–10 seconds and can take up to a minute; they are not instantaneous.
The transition guidance is in Life of a Broadcast. Do not treat a live feed as proof that the broadcast has completed its transition.
Corroborate the API result on the VPS and as a viewer
Use the VPS and public video as independent checks. Their results help narrow down a fault, but neither substitutes for the API receipt status.

Check the process and its recent logs using the controls for the encoder and operating system you actually run. There is no universal command for an unspecified VPS setup. If the process is absent or its output has stopped updating, investigate that encoder. If it appears to be producing output but YouTube reports inactive, check its configured destination and stream key, then the VPS network path. These are operational troubleshooting steps, not guarantees about what a particular API status means.
If the API says active but viewers report a frozen or stale picture, inspect the public broadcast separately. The receipt status does not establish that the video content is changing, and there is no universal API field documented here that proves frames are visually fresh.

If you cannot access the API
Live Streaming API requests must be authorized by the Google Account that owns the channel. If you do not have that access, ask an authorized channel operator to check, or use the current YouTube Studio live control room for a UI-level check. The API’s owner-account authorization requirements are described in the YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
