For a digital Xbox 360 or original Xbox title that Xbox supports through backward compatibility, look in Ready to Install on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Then check compatibility, edition, and whether you own a digital entitlement or a disc. These are separate questions: a game can be owned but unsupported on your console, or delisted yet still downloadable by its previous owner.
What “delisted” means on Xbox
“Delisted” describes a storefront status: the title is no longer offered for new purchase in that store. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a particular Microsoft account owns the game, whether an installed copy will continue to launch, or whether a newer Xbox console can run it.

This separation is especially important for older Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Store availability, account ownership, backward compatibility, and server support can change independently.

Step 1: Sign in to the account that acquired the game
Start with the Microsoft/Xbox account that may have purchased, redeemed, or otherwise received the game. A library check can only show entitlements attached to the account currently signed in. A different gamertag or Microsoft account may have made the original transaction, even if several people use the same console.
- Sign out any account that is not the suspected purchaser.
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft/Xbox account that bought or redeemed the title.
- Open the console’s game library and view owned titles. Use the title search if the library provides one.
- Check the complete game name and edition, including bundles, deluxe versions, regional editions, and titles that share a similar name.
Do not infer ownership from a game appearing in a console’s installed list. An installed game may have been placed there by another account, copied from a disc, or installed through a subscription or temporary licence. The account that acquired the entitlement is the account whose library matters for a digital ownership check.
Step 2: Check Ready to Install for backward-compatible digital games
Xbox says owned digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles in its backward-compatibility catalogue automatically appear in Ready to Install on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. If the delisted game is one of those supported titles, this is the most useful place to look after signing in with the purchasing account.
- On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, open the game library for the signed-in account.
- Select Ready to Install.
- Search or browse for the exact Xbox 360 or original Xbox title and edition.
- If it appears, select it to begin downloading. The listing indicates that the account’s digital entitlement is available for that supported title; it does not mean every version or platform edition is included.
Menu wording and library presentation can differ by console generation, account region, and software updates. The reliable test is the account’s owned-game listing and, for supported older games, the presence of the title under Ready to Install, rather than a single universal menu path.
If the title is absent, do not conclude immediately that the purchase vanished. First verify the account and edition, then perform the compatibility and entitlement checks below.

Step 3: Confirm that the exact title and edition match
Older Xbox catalogues often contain similarly named releases. A backward-compatible Xbox 360 version, an original Xbox version, a remaster, a bundle, and downloadable content can have different entitlements. Search for the complete title and compare the edition shown in your purchase records, game library, packaging, or disc label.
- Base game versus DLC: owning an expansion does not necessarily grant the base game.
- Bundle versus standalone release: a bundle may appear under its own name rather than the individual game title.
- Regional or special editions: a release tied to a different market can have separate availability or licensing.
- Disc copy versus digital purchase: a disc entitlement will not necessarily appear as a digital item in Ready to Install.
If another household member bought the game, repeat the library check while signed in to that person’s account. The absence of a title from your account proves only that the current account does not show that entitlement; it cannot verify what another account owns.
Step 4: Check compatibility with the console you plan to use
Ownership and compatibility are independent. Xbox supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, not the entire historical catalogue. A game can remain attached to an account but be unavailable on a particular modern console because it is not in the supported catalogue.
Check the title against Xbox’s current backward-compatibility catalogue for the console you intend to use. Confirm the exact release, because compatibility applies to the supported title and version, not automatically to every game with a similar name.

For a compatible disc game, installation does not convert the disc into a permanent digital entitlement. Xbox requires the disc to remain in the drive to play, because the disc acts as the licence check. If the target machine has no disc drive, use a digital entitlement only; Xbox Series S is digital-only.

Step 5: Understand what the Xbox 360 Store closure changed
Xbox stopped new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. That retirement ended new storefront transactions for the affected store; it did not erase previously purchased Xbox 360 games or downloadable content from owners’ accounts.

Xbox’s closure guidance states that previously purchased games and DLC remain playable and re-downloadable. Xbox also answered the practical case directly: “If you’ve deleted a game that you have purchased, but you want to play again, you’ll still be able to re-download it.” Its current Xbox 360 information similarly says that customers can no longer purchase Xbox 360 games but can still play the catalogue they own.
That protection is specific to prior purchases covered by Xbox’s guidance. Do not generalize the 360-store policy into a guarantee for every delisting, licensing dispute, region, or account problem. A title removed from a different storefront, a game obtained through another licence, or an account with a billing or access issue may require a separate determination.
Step 6: Check online-service status separately
Finding the game in your library answers an ownership question, not an online-play question. Xbox said that online play for previously purchased Xbox 360 games continues only while the publisher supports the game’s servers.
Before relying on multiplayer, check the specific game’s current service status and the publisher’s support information. A game can download and launch normally while matchmaking, leaderboards, or other network features no longer operate. Conversely, a server outage does not by itself prove that your account lost the game.

- Library listing present, servers retired: the account still owns the game, but affected online modes are unavailable.
- Library listing absent: resolve account, edition, and compatibility questions before diagnosing network service.
Why a delisted game may not appear
The wrong Microsoft account is signed in
This is the most common account-level explanation. Check every Microsoft/Xbox account that may have made the purchase or redemption, including an account used by another family member. A console profile with a familiar gamertag is not proof that it is the account that paid for the title.
The game is disc-based
A disc copy may not appear as a digital library entitlement. On a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with a disc drive, insert the original disc to trigger installation and leave it inserted to play. A digital-only Xbox Series S cannot use this route.
The title is not backward compatible
An account can own an Xbox 360 or original Xbox game that Xbox has not enabled on newer hardware. In that case, its absence from Ready to Install on Xbox One or Series X|S reflects compatibility, not necessarily loss of ownership.
The edition does not match
Search for the exact release, bundle, or add-on. A similarly named remaster or a different regional edition may be a separate product.

The game was removed under a different licence or storefront policy
The Xbox 360 Store closure guarantees described above concern previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC. They should not be treated as a universal rule for every delisted Xbox title. Licensing terms, region, platform, and the original purchase channel can affect what remains available.

A temporary account or service issue is hiding the listing
If the suspected account, exact edition, and compatibility status all check out but the title still does not appear, record the account identifier, title, edition, and original purchase or redemption details. Contact Xbox Support with those specifics. The available guidance does not establish one order-history or menu path that works across all Xbox generations and regions, so support is the appropriate next step when the entitlement cannot be resolved in the library.
A practical decision path
Use this sequence to avoid buying a replacement copy before you know what is missing:
- Identify the account: sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that may have acquired the game.
- Identify the copy: decide whether the original entitlement was digital, disc-based, a bundle, or downloadable content.
- Search the library: look for the exact title and edition; for supported digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on Xbox One or Series X|S, check Ready to Install.
- Verify compatibility: confirm that Xbox lists that title for the console you want to use.
- Apply the disc rule: if it is a compatible disc release, insert the disc and keep it in the drive; this cannot be done on Series S.
- Check online features: verify that the publisher still operates the relevant servers.
- Escalate with evidence: if the game remains absent, contact Xbox Support with the account and exact title or edition details.
The result should be stated precisely. “The account shows an owned digital entitlement” is different from “the game is for sale,” “the game runs on this console,” and “multiplayer still works.” Keeping those conclusions separate prevents a delisting from being mistaken for account loss or guaranteed compatibility.

You do not need to buy a new console, controller, storage drive, replacement disc, or printed guide merely to determine whether an account owns a delisted digital game. The initial check is account-based: sign in, inspect the owned-game library, and confirm compatibility. A physical copy becomes relevant only when the title is a supported disc release and you are intentionally using disc-based ownership on a console with a drive.
