Check the exact product and edition named in the offer, then open the official store listing and read its included-content and eligibility details. “Free” describes the price under the offer’s terms; it does not tell you whether you are getting the remaster, the base game, an upgrade, or a bundle with extras.
How to verify what the offer grants
- Start with the offer itself. Note the full product name, storefront, platform, country or region, and claim dates. An offer for one platform or region may not apply to another.
- Open the official product listing. Follow the offer’s link where possible, and match the listing’s exact title and edition. Look for labels such as “Base Game,” “Remastered,” “Upgrade,” “Deluxe,” or “Complete.” A title containing “Remastered” does not establish that the offer includes every edition or add-on.
- Read the included-content list. Check whether the remastered game itself, expansions, DLC, digital extras, or platform bonuses are named. If editions or add-ons are listed separately, open those entries rather than assuming they come with the offer.
- Check the eligibility terms. Look for whether the offer is open to new claimants or only existing owners, and whether entitlement depends on a particular store account, platform, version, or digital-versus-disc license.
- Resolve unclear or conflicting wording before claiming or paying. If the offer and listing do not agree, consult the publisher’s or storefront’s current terms or support information. Until the entitlement is explicit, treat it as unresolved.
What to compare when editions differ
Compare the exact product granted, not just the game name. If the store offers multiple editions or an upgrade, check each of these details:
- Which game version the offer grants: base game, remaster, or upgrade.
- Whether the entitlement is for a new claimant or an existing owner.
- Which platform, storefront account, and region qualify.
- Whether a digital copy or a physical disc is required.
- Which expansions, DLC, and edition-specific extras are explicitly included.
Examples of why the wording matters
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered
In a September 29, 2026 announcement, CD PROJEKT RED describes the remaster as a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It gives original Nintendo Switch owners a distinct Nintendo Switch 2 route. The announcement says the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions are included even for people who owned only the base version, and that the remaster replaces the Complete Edition on supported platforms. It also describes separate purchase availability on Battle.net and Microsoft Store as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. These are rules for this game and its named platforms, not a template for other offers. Read CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered
The Epic Games Store listing labels the product “Base Game” and separately lists a “Deluxe Edition Upgrade.” That distinction shows why the offer’s product type and separate entries matter as much as the title. Check the Epic Games Store listing.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE
Square Enix’s edition page distinguishes Standard, Deluxe, Twin Pack, and other configurations, and identifies the game, Episode INTERmission, digital extras, and platform bonuses associated with them. Compare the listed items rather than relying on an edition label alone. See Square Enix’s edition details.
Alan Wake Remastered
The PlayStation Store page says the product grants digital PS4 and PS5 versions and explains the conditions for an existing PS4 owner to obtain the PS5 version. It also says PS4 disc owners using a disc-free PS5 cannot claim that version at no extra cost. This is a platform- and license-specific example, not a general upgrade rule. Check the PlayStation Store listing.

How to read “free upgrade” versus “free game”
A free upgrade for current owners is different from an offer that lets any eligible account claim a remaster. Read the offer’s verbs and conditions closely: “owners” and “upgrade” indicate an ownership-based route; “claim” or “includes” may describe a broader offer, but the listing and terms still determine who qualifies and what content is granted. Do not transfer one publisher’s upgrade rules to another game.
