It depends on the specific game, platform, edition, account, and what its servers do. A shutdown might remove only multiplayer, leave the campaign and local play intact, or make the whole game inaccessible. Check the publisher’s title-specific notice, identify every server-dependent feature, and test the version you own while services are still running.
How to check a specific game
- Find the official shutdown notice. Search the publisher or platform support site for the exact game name plus “server shutdown,” “online services,” or “service update.” Confirm the platform, edition, and region match yours. Check when the notice was updated and revisit it near the shutdown date: 2K says retirement dates can change and updates its status page when plans are confirmed. Check 2K’s online services status.
- List the features you care about. Check launch and authentication, campaign progression, multiplayer, local co-op, saves, DLC, stores and currency, user-created content, leaderboards, and social features separately. A shutdown notice may retain some and remove others.
- Look for authentication and check-in requirements. Search the game’s documentation and notice for “always online,” “internet connection required,” launcher sign-in, account linking, license validation, periodic check-in, or a required companion app. A game can have an offline campaign yet still depend on a server to launch or validate access. An Electronic Frontier Foundation filing hosted by the U.S. Copyright Office discusses how authentication-server failure can make games unplayable, including games designed with offline modes. - Test the game while its services still work. Install available updates and follow the publisher’s instructions for offline mode. Disconnect the network, close the game, try a fresh launch, load a local save, and test each mode you need. Record the edition, platform, software version, account state, and what worked. A successful test describes that setup at that time; it does not prove that later patches, periodic check-ins, or authentication services will not change the result.
- Check what will be retained or transferred. Find out whether saves are local or cloud-only, whether DLC is downloaded, whether creations are stored on your device, and whether there is a migration tool or deadline. Treat announced transition features as plans until the publisher confirms they are available.
- Keep the notice and back up local saves. Save a copy or note of the official notice, relevant dates, and test results. Use your platform’s supported save-backup method where available. A backup cannot restore server-hosted gameplay, online inventory, or authentication.
What a shutdown can mean for play
“Servers are shutting down” does not say which parts of a game will remain available. Official notices show several different outcomes:
- Some features disappear, but the campaign remains. PlayStation says the inFAMOUS 2 and Festival of Blood campaigns remain playable after their user-generated-content servers close, while online user-created missions become unavailable. For Gran Turismo Sport, online services and features end, but offline portions and purchased add-ons remain playable. See PlayStation’s game server status page.
- The game becomes unplayable. PlayStation says GUNS UP! requires online access and will no longer be playable after service termination. Epic’s December 14, 2022 notice likewise said most affected older games would remain playable offline, while some would not; it named Battle Breakers as becoming inaccessible. - An offline successor may be planned. On September 28, 2026, Bandai Namco announced that SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada’s online service would end after May 2027 and that a standalone offline version was in development with some online functions removed. The company said some save data and designated purchased items were expected to transfer; how and when remained to be announced. Local-save transfer was scheduled for December 2026. These were plans, not completed features, so check the notice for updates. Read Bandai Namco’s notice.
Check saves, purchases, and virtual items separately
A game remaining playable does not mean every item or feature survives. Saves may be local, cloud-only, or tied to online progression; DLC may already be installed or require a store or server; user creations may live only on publisher servers. Virtual currency and inventory can have different rules from the game itself. EA says that whether currency or inventory remains usable depends on the particular game and retired service. Check EA’s service updates.
For each item you want to keep, look for its storage location, any export or transfer option, and deadlines for migration or use. Preserve local saves through the platform’s supported method, but do not assume a save copy includes server-hosted content or account entitlements.

Why a disc or downloaded copy may not be enough
A physical disc or installed download preserves the game files, not necessarily the services those files require. If startup authentication, license validation, periodic check-ins, or core gameplay depend on a publisher’s server, the game may fail even with all files on your device. Likewise, a downloaded installer does not preserve an online store, multiplayer matchmaking, or server-hosted progression.

Shutdown dates and transition details are title-specific and can change. 2K’s status page, for example, listed NBA 2K27 services as scheduled through December 31, 2028 in its September 14, 2026 update, alongside named offline modes; 2K cautioned that dates could be extended or brought forward. Treat such dates as the publisher’s current schedule, not a guarantee, and consult the live notice before relying on one. View 2K’s current status page.

EA says older games’ player numbers typically fall below 1% of peak online players across all EA titles before the company considers online service no longer feasible to maintain. That is EA’s stated rationale, not an independent industry-wide shutdown statistic, and it does not predict whether a particular game will remain playable offline. Read EA’s service updates.
