Check those against the mod author’s requirements before copying files. “GTA 5” by itself is not a sufficient version number, and a game update can make a previously working script unusable.
What “compatible” means for a GTA 5 mod
Compatibility is not just a question of whether the game launches after installation. A mod can load but fail to display its menu, crash when a feature is activated, or silently do nothing because its script library does not support your executable. Treat compatibility as a chain of matching requirements:

- Edition: the mod must target the PC edition you own, such as Legacy or Enhanced when the author distinguishes them.
- Executable build: the mod and its dependencies must support the file version of your installed
GTA5.exe. - Dependencies: required loaders and frameworks, such as Script Hook V or ScriptHookVDotNet, must also support that build and mod type.
If any link in that chain is unsupported, installation may produce an error, a crash, or no visible effect. The reliable process is to identify your edition and executable version first, then read the mod’s complete requirements and verify every dependency.
Why a matching name is not enough
Two installations can both be labeled “GTA V” while using different editions or executable builds. A launcher label does not tell you whether a particular ASI plugin has been updated for your file version, and a script that worked before a patch may stop working when the executable changes. Compatibility therefore means matching the values and requirements in the installation instructions, not matching a general product name.

Identify whether you have GTA 5 Legacy or Enhanced
Many PC mod instructions now separate GTA 5 Legacy and GTA 5 Enhanced. They are distinct targets, so files made for one edition should not be assumed to work in the other. The edition name shown in a launcher, shortcut, or store library is more useful than the shared “GTA 5” name, but the mod’s own installation notes remain the final authority.
Where to confirm the edition
- Open the launcher or store library where you start the game and note whether the entry is labeled Legacy or Enhanced.
- Check the mod page for an explicit edition statement. Look for wording such as “Legacy only,” “Enhanced support,” or separate download instructions.
- Read the requirements and comments for edition-specific limitations rather than relying on screenshots or the upload title.
- If you keep more than one installation, open the folder for the shortcut you actually use and verify that its
GTA5.exebelongs to that edition.
If the author does not state an edition, treat compatibility as unconfirmed. Do not install a Legacy archive into Enhanced, or vice versa, simply because both versions are called GTA 5. An explicit statement that only one edition is supported overrides assumptions based on the mod’s age, popularity, or download count.
Find your GTA5.exe version in Windows
The version used for compatibility checks is the executable’s Windows file version, not the version shown for GTA Online. Version-dependent tools and scripts use the build of the installed executable.

- Open File Explorer and locate the GTA 5 installation folder—the folder that contains
GTA5.exe. - Right-click
GTA5.exeand select Properties. - Open the Details tab.
- Read the value labeled File version and record it exactly, including all number groups.
- Compare that value with the mod author’s supported-version notes and with the release information for each required loader.
Do not substitute a GTA Online version, launcher version, or a number copied from an old forum post. The displayed value can change after a patch, and an old example build in a guide is not evidence of current support.
File version versus online version
Readers often search for “what version am I running?” and “how to check which version of the gta5.exe.” The answer for mod compatibility is the Windows File version field on the executable. It is the value you should quote when asking an author for help. If a support page lists a different numbering scheme, do not guess that the values are equivalent; ask which executable build the author means.
Read the mod page beyond the download button
Open the complete description, requirements, installation section, and any compatibility or changelog notes. Record the following before downloading:

How to interpret vague claims
“Works with the latest version” is time-sensitive. Compare the date and wording with your own executable value and with the loader’s current release notes. “All versions” is not a substitute for an edition and build statement, especially when the author lists a separate Enhanced or Legacy download. A changelog that names a patch or dependency update is stronger evidence than a screenshot, a file name, or a comment saying that the mod worked for someone else.
Check loaders and frameworks separately
Script mods do not all use the same loading system. The installation guide may require one library for an ASI plugin and another for a .NET script. A mod’s name or file extension is not enough to determine whether your current setup is complete.
Script Hook V for ASI-based mods
ASI-based modifications commonly require Script Hook V. Confirm that the release you install supports your edition and the exact executable build shown in GTA5.exe Properties. Script Hook V must match the game version; when the game updates, dependent ASI scripts can stop working until a compatible Script Hook V build is available.
ScriptHookVDotNet for .NET scripts
.NET scripts generally require ScriptHookVDotNet rather than only Script Hook V. Check the mod’s required ScriptHookVDotNet version and its supported game and edition combinations. Installing Script Hook V alone does not satisfy a .NET dependency.
Archive mods and OpenIV components
Mods that replace or add archived game assets may require OpenIV and, in some cases, OpenIV.ASI or an ASI Loader. Follow the individual archive’s path instructions; a script loader cannot make an incorrectly placed archive work.
Do not rely on a third-party table of Script Hook V builds as definitive current support. Exact loader availability changes, so check the project maintainer’s current release information and compare it with your executable before choosing a file.
Build a dependency chain
Write the chain in order: edition, executable file version, mod format, primary loader, and any secondary framework. Then verify each link independently. For example, an ASI mod may have a supported game build but still fail because Script Hook V has not yet been updated. A .NET mod may have a current Script Hook V while requiring a separate ScriptHookVDotNet release. An archive replacement may have no script dependency at all but still need OpenIV.ASI to be enabled. The mod page and each dependency’s release notes must agree.

Use a compatibility worksheet before installing
Writing the values down prevents a common mistake: matching the mod to the game while forgetting that its loader has a different requirement.

A single “no” means you should pause instead of forcing the installation. Wait for an updated dependency, choose a build explicitly supporting your version, or ask the mod author for clarification. Save the worksheet with the mod’s download so you can repeat the check after a patch.
Install archive changes in a separate mods folder
OpenIV’s published instructions describe a safer arrangement for archive-based modifications: create a separate mods folder and mirror the original archive paths inside it. The game reads the modified copies while the original files remain available for rollback.
- Open the GTA 5 installation in OpenIV and enable the mode required by its instructions.
- Create or use the
modsfolder at the game’s installation level. - Copy the original archive or folder path into
mods, preserving the same structure. - Apply the modification to the copy inside
mods, not to the original archive. - Keep a note of every file changed and retain the unmodified originals.
If a change causes trouble, disabling OpenIV.ASI or the ASI Loader can return the game to its original files for testing. This separation does not make an incompatible script compatible, but it limits the damage and makes removal practical.
Why the folder arrangement matters
Editing the original archives makes it harder to determine whether a crash comes from the mod or from a damaged base file. A separate folder gives you a controlled rollback: disable the relevant loader or remove the copied archive, then test the untouched game. It also lets you document which archive path belongs to which mod when several replacements are installed.
Test compatibility without risking your main setup
Install one mod or one dependency change at a time and test in Story Mode. Follow the mod’s own activation instructions; a successful launch only proves that the game started, not that the feature works.
- Start the game with the required loader installed and verify that it reaches Story Mode.
- Use the mod’s documented hotkey, menu, or command to confirm that the script actually loads.
- Exercise the feature that matters to you instead of stopping at the title screen.
- Quit and repeat after each additional mod so a failure can be attributed to the latest change.
- Keep a short test log: executable version, dependency versions, files changed, and the observed result.
Avoid testing an unverified mod first in GTA Online. Compatibility instructions for this workflow concern the PC game and Story Mode; online use also raises separate account and policy risks that are outside this version check.

There is no single universal checker that can establish compatibility for every GTA V mod. Manual comparison of the edition, executable build, mod requirements, and dependency release notes remains necessary.
What to do after a GTA 5 update
Recheck compatibility whenever the game updates, even if you did not change any mod files. The update can replace GTA5.exe with a new build while the installed mod remains unchanged.

- Read the new

- Check the current release information for Script Hook V, ScriptHookVDotNet, and any other required framework.
- Look for an explicit update or a temporary incompatibility notice before replacing working files.
- If no compatible loader exists, disable the affected mod and wait rather than mixing files from unrelated versions.
Do not infer that a loader is current because its filename or folder has not changed. Support is tied to the executable build, not to how recently you downloaded the archive. Reinstalling the same old loader will not solve a build mismatch.
Troubleshoot a mod that does not work
The game crashes on startup
- Remove or disable the most recently installed mod or loader.
- Temporarily disable OpenIV.ASI or the ASI Loader when testing archive changes.
- Restore the original files from outside the
modsfolder if the crash disappears. - Recheck the edition and
GTA5.exeversion before reinstalling anything.
The game starts but the mod is missing
- Confirm that the mod’s required loader is installed in the location specified by its instructions.
- Check whether the file is an ASI plugin or a .NET script and install the corresponding library.
- Verify the activation key or menu procedure documented by the author.
- Compare the executable build with the mod and loader support statements.
The mod worked until a patch
- Record the new executable File version.
- Check for a compatible loader release before blaming the mod itself.
- Read the mod’s changelog and comments for a patch-specific notice.
- Disable the mod until all required dependencies support the new build.
Only one feature fails
Confirm that the feature is included in your edition and that optional files were installed. Then test with other recent changes disabled. A partial failure can indicate a missing framework or an obsolete configuration file rather than a complete game-version mismatch.
You cannot prove compatibility
If the page does not identify an edition, executable build, or dependency, do not convert uncertainty into a yes. Keep the mod disabled, contact the author with your exact File version, or select a candidate whose support statement is explicit. This is safer than combining files from several unrelated releases.

A mod with narrower but explicit support is usually a safer choice than one claiming universal compatibility without a build or dependency list. Compare the date of the last update with the date of your game patch, but do not use age alone as proof of failure: the decisive evidence is the author’s stated support and the dependency chain.
