How to Check Whether a Mac Game Runs Natively on Apple Silicon or Through Rosetta

Finder’s Get Info panel tells you whether a Mac game is Apple-silicon native, Universal or Intel-only. Learn how to check the game app, verify Rosetta mode and account for launchers, plug-ins and future macOS support.

Use Finder’s built-in Get Info panel on the game’s own .app bundle. The Kind field identifies it as Application (Apple silicon), Application (Universal) or Application (Intel). Intel-only games require Rosetta on Apple silicon; Universal games normally use their native Apple-silicon code unless you deliberately enable Open using Rosetta.

That check answers the architecture of the app bundle you selected. It does not, by itself, certify every launcher, updater, plug-in, anti-cheat module or helper that the game may start. For a dependable answer, check the actual game app, verify the launch setting, and then consider the rest of the game’s software chain.

The quickest way to tell

On an Apple-silicon Mac, locate the installed game application in Finder, select it, and press Command-I (or choose File > Get Info). Read the Kind field:

Finder label What is inside the app What happens on Apple silicon
Application (Apple silicon) Code compiled for Apple silicon (arm64). Runs natively; Rosetta is not needed for that app.
Application (Universal) Both Apple-silicon and Intel (x86_64) code slices. macOS normally chooses the arm64 slice. Rosetta is used only if you force it or another Intel-only component requires it.
Application (Intel) Intel code only. Runs translated by Rosetta, provided the installed macOS and the game’s dependencies still support it.

These labels describe the application bundle, not a guarantee that every launcher, plug-in, anti-cheat module or helper process used by the game is compatible. A game can have a native main executable and still fail because a bundled component is Intel-only or otherwise incompatible.

In practical terms, the answer is usually immediate: Apple silicon means native, Intel means translated, and Universal means both choices are available. The important extra question for a Universal title is which slice macOS has been told to use for this particular copy.

Check the game’s actual app bundle

Storefront clients and launchers are separate applications from the games they install. Checking the storefront app can therefore give you the wrong answer. Inspect the game itself.

  1. Open Finder and browse to the folder containing the installed game. For a game in Applications, use the copy in Applications; for a launcher-managed title, open the launcher’s installation folder.
  2. Find the file whose name ends in .app and represents the game, not just the launcher, updater or crash reporter.
  3. Click the game app once and press Command-I, or select File > Get Info.
  4. Read Kind and classify the build using the table above.

If Finder shows several similarly named applications, inspect the one that actually starts the game. Some launchers contain a small launcher app plus a separate game app; each can have a different architecture. An updater or crash reporter can also be a separate app and is not a substitute for checking the executable that renders the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rely on the name of a download, a store listing or a game’s marketing page alone. The installed bundle is the version you will actually run, and a later update can change its architecture or add a helper. If you keep more than one copy of a game, such as a backup and an active installation, check each copy separately.

What each architecture means

Application (Apple silicon)

This is an arm64 build intended for Apple-silicon Macs. The app’s primary executable does not need translation. That removes Rosetta as a requirement for the application itself, but it does not certify that every embedded helper, plug-in or anti-cheat service is native or compatible.

Native also does not mean “guaranteed to perform well.” It tells you how the executable is built. Graphics APIs, game-engine bugs, drivers, memory requirements, controller support and online services can still determine whether the title is usable.

Application (Intel)

An Intel label means the app was built for x86_64 Macs. On Apple silicon, macOS uses Rosetta to translate Intel instructions while the game runs. Rosetta is an operating-system translation environment, not a separate game mode that you launch manually. If Rosetta is missing, macOS normally offers to install it when an Intel app is opened; installation and continued support depend on the macOS release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing Rosetta does not convert the game into an arm64 build. It supplies the translation layer needed by the Intel executable. An old framework, driver-like helper, plug-in or anti-cheat component can still prevent launch even after Rosetta is installed.

Application (Universal)

Apple defines a Universal binary as one containing executable code for both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs. On an Apple-silicon Mac, macOS prefers the arm64 slice, so a Universal game normally runs natively. Universal describes what code is available, not which slice was selected for every launch.

The two slices are packaged together, but they are distinct compiled versions. An update can replace a Universal build with an Intel-only build, or a launcher can update the game while leaving its own app at a different architecture. Recheck after major updates if the architecture matters to your setup.

Check whether a Universal game has been forced through Rosetta

A Universal app can be configured to launch using its Intel slice. In the same Finder information window, look for Open using Rosetta.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the game’s .app and open Get Info.
  2. If Open using Rosetta is present, note whether its checkbox is selected.
  3. Checked means macOS is configured to launch the Universal app translated through Rosetta.
  4. Clear the checkbox to let macOS select the native arm64 slice, then close the window and relaunch the game.

The checkbox may not appear for an Apple-silicon-only or Intel-only app. An Intel-only app cannot become native by changing a setting, and an Apple-silicon-only app has no Intel slice to force.

If you change the setting while the game is open, quit the game and its launcher first, then relaunch. Otherwise, you may continue observing an already-running process and mistakenly conclude that the setting had no effect. If a launcher opens the game, make sure you changed the setting on the game app that the launcher starts, not merely on the launcher itself.

There are legitimate reasons to force Rosetta on a Universal game. A legacy plug-in, mod or Intel-only helper may work only when the main process is also running under translation. Conversely, forcing Rosetta can hide a native-slice bug or reduce the usefulness of a native compatibility test. Record the setting when reporting a problem so another person can reproduce the same launch mode.

Build architecture versus what is running right now

Get Info is the clearest built-in check of the app bundle and its Universal launch preference. It is not a complete audit of every process started by a game. A launcher may start a separate executable, and a game may load helpers, plug-ins or services after launch.

When the question is specifically “is this running natively right now?”, use a current macOS process-architecture indicator if available in your release. An optional Mac App Store utility called Silicon Info describes showing whether a running application is native or translated. Treat such utilities as supplementary: the app’s architecture label and Rosetta checkbox remain the authoritative first check, while a process viewer can reveal what a particular running process selected.

Do not infer the architecture of every child process from the parent label. A Universal parent can launch an Intel helper, and a launcher can run separately from the game. Apple also documents that code of different architectures cannot be mixed within one process, which is why an incompatible plug-in or helper can prevent an otherwise Universal game from starting correctly.

A runtime indicator is especially useful when a title uses several processes: a launcher, a game process, a crash reporter, an updater and an anti-cheat service may all appear separately. Check the process whose behavior you are investigating. Seeing one native process does not prove that every related process is native, and seeing an Intel helper does not necessarily mean the main game executable is Intel-only.

Why a native label does not guarantee that a game will work

  • Launchers and games differ: the storefront client, patcher and game executable may be separate apps with different architectures.
  • Plug-ins and mods: an Intel-only plug-in cannot simply be loaded into an arm64 process. The game may need a native version, a Universal plug-in or a different launch configuration.
  • Anti-cheat and helper services: a game can include background components whose compatibility determines whether startup succeeds.
  • Scripts and unusual bundles: Apple documents special handling for script-only apps, which may be run under Rosetta as a precaution. A package-level label therefore cannot describe every component’s runtime behavior.
  • Architecture is not a frame-rate test: native code can be optimized for Apple silicon, and Apple notes that translated apps often have no noticeable performance difference in typical use. Those general statements do not predict the frame rate, crashes or graphics compatibility of an individual game.

Apple’s architecture rule also explains some confusing error messages: one process cannot freely combine arm64 and x86_64 code. A plug-in compiled only for Intel cannot be inserted into a native arm64 game process simply because the main app is Universal. The developer may need to ship a matching native plug-in, run the entire process through Rosetta, or remove the plug-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility can change without the Finder label changing. A game may remain Universal while an online service retires an old client, an anti-cheat vendor drops a framework, or a mod stops receiving updates. Treat architecture as one diagnostic dimension, not a complete compatibility score.

If the game will not launch, use the architecture result to troubleshoot

Finder says Application (Intel)

Confirm that Rosetta is installed by opening the game. If macOS presents an installation prompt, accept it, allow the installation to finish, then try the game again. If no prompt appears and the game fails, install current macOS updates, restart, and check the game developer’s support notes for Intel-only requirements, old frameworks or anti-cheat restrictions. Rosetta can translate the executable; it cannot repair an unsupported dependency.

Do not assume that reinstalling the game will make it Universal. Only the developer can supply a different build. If the title is distributed through a launcher, check whether the launcher offers an updated Apple-silicon or Universal game version and whether the installed copy actually changed after the update.

Finder says Application (Universal), but it fails natively

Open Get Info and check whether Open using Rosetta is selected. If it is selected, clear it and relaunch to test the arm64 slice. If it is already clear, test the game with the developer’s current updates and temporarily remove incompatible plug-ins or mods. A Universal main app can still depend on a non-Universal helper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a record of which test worked. If Rosetta mode succeeds but native mode fails, that points toward a native-slice or dependency issue, but it does not identify the faulty component by itself. Report the game version, macOS version, launch mode and any third-party additions to the developer.

Finder says Application (Apple silicon), but a launcher or helper fails

Inspect the launcher and any separately installed helper apps in the same way. The game may be native while its updater, anti-cheat service or mod manager is not. Follow the game’s own support instructions before deleting components, because removing a helper can break updates or online play.

If the game starts when launched directly but not from the storefront, compare the two paths. The storefront may add a launcher, overlay or authentication process that changes the dependency chain. That behavior does not change the game app’s Kind label, but it can explain why a direct test and a normal launch produce different results.

The game starts but behaves differently

Record the architecture label, the state of Open using Rosetta, the macOS version and the game version. Then check the developer’s release notes for that exact combination. Architecture alone does not establish graphics API support, controller support, online-service compatibility or expected performance.

For a meaningful comparison, repeat the test with the same settings, save files, display resolution and add-ons. A change in frame rate or stability may come from a game update or configuration change rather than from native versus translated execution.

Comparing two Mac games

If you are choosing between titles rather than checking one installation, compare the whole launch chain, not just the headline label.

Comparison question Evidence to collect Why it matters
What is the game build? Get Info: Apple silicon, Universal or Intel. Shows whether the main app can execute arm64 code or requires translation.
What launch mode is configured? For Universal apps, the Open using Rosetta checkbox. A Universal game can be deliberately run translated.
What else launches? Separate launcher, updater, plug-ins, anti-cheat and helper apps. One incompatible component can block startup or features.
How long will translation remain available? The current macOS Rosetta policy and the developer’s support statement. An Intel-only game may become harder to run on future macOS versions.
What does the developer document? Release notes and support pages for the exact game version. Architecture labels do not certify compatibility or performance.

There is no reliable percentage showing how many Mac games are native; available Apple documentation explains architectures and Rosetta rather than publishing a game-compatibility survey. Treat per-game evidence as more useful than a general statistic.

For a purchase decision, prefer a current Apple-silicon or Universal build when all other factors are equal, because it avoids depending on translation. That preference is about future flexibility, not a promise of higher frame rates. A well-maintained Intel game can be more reliable today than a poorly maintained native port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rosetta’s changing macOS support

Apple’s current support guidance says Rosetta remains generally available through macOS 27. Apple says that under macOS 28, Rosetta is expected to remain only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. This is an operating-system policy, not a promise that any particular Intel game will continue to launch.

If a game is Intel-only, check Apple’s current support page and the game developer’s release notes before upgrading macOS, especially as macOS 28 approaches. A Universal or Apple-silicon build is the more durable architecture choice, but it still needs compatible helpers, plug-ins and online services.

Do not treat the stated policy as a guarantee for a specific title. “Older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks” is a limited category, and a game can fail for another reason even while Rosetta is available. Recheck the policy close to an operating-system upgrade rather than relying on an old forum post or a previous installation.

A practical decision rule

  • Best case: Application (Apple silicon), with compatible dependencies. It does not require Rosetta.
  • Usually native: Application (Universal), with Open using Rosetta unchecked. macOS selects arm64.
  • Translated: Application (Intel), or Universal with Open using Rosetta checked. Rosetta is part of the launch path.
  • Uncertain: Any label where a launcher, plug-in, anti-cheat component or helper has not been checked. Verify those components and consult current game-specific notes.

Apple’s concise definition is that “a universal binary runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers, because it contains executable code for both architectures.” On an Apple-silicon Mac, the Finder label plus the Universal-app Rosetta checkbox gives you the fastest reliable answer about the game’s intended launch architecture; the rest of the compatibility picture comes from its bundled components and current support status.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Intel game always need Rosetta?

Yes, an Intel-only app needs Rosetta to translate its x86_64 code on an Apple-silicon Mac, assuming the current macOS still supports that app and its dependencies. Rosetta is provided by macOS; you do not launch it separately.

Does “Universal” mean the game is running natively?

Not automatically. A Universal app contains both slices, and macOS normally selects arm64 on Apple silicon. However, Open using Rosetta can force the Intel slice, and separate helpers can run with different architectures.

Why can’t I find Open using Rosetta?

The option is generally relevant to a Universal app. It may not appear for an Apple-silicon-only or Intel-only app, because there is no alternate slice to select in those cases.

Should I check Steam or another launcher?

Check the game’s own .app bundle first. A storefront client or launcher is a separate app and may be Universal, Intel or Apple silicon independently of the game it starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Rosetta make an Intel plug-in work in a native game?

Not when the plug-in is loaded into an arm64 process. Apple’s architecture rules do not allow different architecture code to be mixed within one process. The game may need to run as a whole through Rosetta, or the plug-in must be updated or removed.

Will native Apple-silicon code give me more frames per second?

Not necessarily. Native code can be optimized for Apple silicon, while Apple notes that translated apps often have no noticeable performance difference in typical use. Actual results depend on the individual game, engine, graphics settings and dependencies.

Is there a built-in way to see the architecture of every running game process?

Get Info is the built-in starting point for the app bundle and its launch preference. For a live process, use a current macOS process-architecture indicator if your release provides one. Silicon Info is an optional Mac App Store utility that describes this function, but third-party indicators should supplement rather than replace the Finder check.

Will an Intel game keep working on future macOS releases?

That cannot be promised. Apple’s current guidance says Rosetta is generally available through macOS 27 and is expected to have a narrower role in macOS 28 for certain older, unmaintained games using Intel frameworks. Check Apple and the developer before upgrading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to check a Mac game’s architecture?

In Finder, select the game’s own .app file, press Command-I, and read Kind. Application (Apple silicon) is native, Application (Intel) requires Rosetta, and Application (Universal) contains both slices.

How do I know whether a Universal game is currently using Rosetta?

Open Get Info for the game app and inspect Open using Rosetta. A selected checkbox forces the Intel slice; clearing it lets macOS choose the native arm64 slice, followed by a relaunch.

Why does a native label not prove the whole game is compatible?

Launchers, plug-ins, anti-cheat modules and helper processes can be separate components with different architectures. An incompatible component can block startup even when the main app is Apple silicon or Universal.

What should I check before upgrading macOS with an Intel-only game installed?

Review Apple’s current Rosetta support guidance and the developer’s notes for the exact game version. General Rosetta support is stated through macOS 27, with a narrower allowance expected in macOS 28.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Select the game’s own .app in Finder and open Get Info. Application (Apple silicon) runs natively, Application (Intel) runs through Rosetta, and Application (Universal) normally runs its arm64 slice unless Open using Rosetta is checked. Then verify launchers, helpers, plug-ins and anti-cheat components, because the label describes one app bundle rather than the entire game.
