A physical game card does not always hold the full game. For Nintendo Switch 2, check the exact box and official listing for a “Game-Key Card” label: that format requires a download before you can play. A regular game card contains game data. These checks apply to Switch 2; packaging conventions vary across platforms and publishers.
How to check before you buy
- Confirm the exact product. Check the platform version, edition and region in the listing. A Switch 2 version may use a different format from a Nintendo Switch version, and special editions can differ from standard ones.
- Inspect the Switch 2 case. Nintendo says the Game-Key Card label appears toward the bottom half of the case label. Its UK guidance also identifies a key icon at the upper right of the card’s front. Look for these clues in product photos when you cannot inspect the box in person. Nintendo of Canada’s Game-Key Card explainer and Nintendo UK’s Game-Key Card page show the format.
- Read the product-specific description. Look for explicit wording such as “Game-Key Card,” a statement that game data must be downloaded, or a required storage amount. If a retailer’s listing is unclear, check Nintendo’s digital listing or the publisher’s information for that exact version; Nintendo says its listing gives the download-space requirement. Nintendo Support’s Game-Key Card overview explains the package and listing storage information.
- Ask if the evidence is inconclusive. Have the retailer or publisher confirm whether the complete game data is stored on the card. “Physical,” “game card included,” or a generic content-included field does not establish that the full game is on the card.
What a Game-Key Card means
Nintendo describes the distinction plainly: “Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data.” The card acts as a key to download the game, rather than carrying the complete game itself. Nintendo Support explains the format and its setup requirements.

Before the first play
Insert the card and download the game. The download requires an internet connection and enough free space in the console’s system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download Game-Key Card data. Check the package or digital listing for the specific title’s required free space; the amount varies by game. Nintendo Support’s overview covers the download and storage requirements.

After the download
Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the first launch after downloading, but not for later launches. The Game-Key Card must still be inserted to start the game. This offline play behavior does not mean the game data is stored on the card: the data was downloaded to the console or storage device. A title may also have separate online-service requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Compare the exact editions, not just the boxes
If two physical versions are available, compare where each version’s game data is stored, what is required for its first play, whether the card must remain inserted, and whether the title has separate online requirements. Confirm all details for the precise platform and edition; a format description for one version does not establish the format for another.
Publisher support can help verify a specific release. For example, Square Enix’s support FAQ confirms that the Nintendo Switch physical version it addresses includes a game card containing game data. That is evidence about that release, not a universal rule for physical games.

What not to assume
- A card in the box does not prove the full game is stored on it.
- A download after purchase does not, by itself, identify the format; use the exact product’s packaging and official description.
- Switch 2’s Game-Key Card guidance is not a universal packaging rule for other consoles or publishers.
- A listing that omits the format is inconclusive. Confirm with the retailer or publisher rather than relying on a generic “physical” label.
