Start with Pokémon’s official Product Gallery and card database, then compare the physical item and its seller context. Those checks can show whether a product or card design is listed and flag warning signs, but Pokémon’s published guidance does not describe a formal process that certifies the specific item in your hand.
How to check whether a Pokémon TCG product is official
- Look up the product in Pokémon’s Product Gallery. Choose the gallery for the relevant year and compare the exact product name, product type, packaging and images. For example, Pokémon publishes separate galleries for 2024 and 2013. Pokémon Support recommends familiarizing yourself with official product images because counterfeit packaging may look unlike the real thing. An image match is a useful reference, not proof that an individual sealed item is genuine.
- Check expected contents against the official listing. Compare what is shown or advertised with Pokémon’s product description, where available. For a specific example, The Pokémon Company International’s June 30, 2026 30th Celebration Product Showcase says the standard Elite Trainer Box includes nine expansion booster packs, a full-art Nidorina promo, sleeves, Energy cards, dice, a coin, a storage box with dividers and a player’s guide. The separately described Pokémon Center version includes 11 packs and a Pokémon Center-logo promo. These are details for those versions of that product, not a template for every Elite Trainer Box. Check release timing as well: that announcement gives September 16, 2026 as the start of releases, with other products scheduled for later dates; an announcement alone does not establish current stock or availability.
- For individual cards, search the official card database. Pokémon’s database lets you search card details including name, rarity and expansion. Pokémon says the expansion set can be identified by the icon at the card’s bottom-right. Use the database to see whether the card design and details are listed; a matching record does not authenticate the physical card. See Pokémon Support’s guide to using the Trading Card Game database.
How can I tell if my Pokémon cards are fake?
Try Pokémon’s bright-light check
Hold a suspect card up to a bright light and see whether it is unusually easy to see through. Pokémon Support says, “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” Treat this as a practical warning check, not a laboratory test: the guidance does not say that every counterfeit will be detected this way or that passing the check proves authenticity.

Weigh the seller and price as warning signs
Pokémon Support says a pack priced dramatically below its suggested retail price is a near-certain warning sign of counterfeit merchandise. It also says the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales it receives originate from flea markets. These are cautions from Pokémon, not proof that every unusually cheap pack or flea-market purchase is fake. Consider the context alongside the product and card checks rather than treating either factor as a verdict.
What to do when checks disagree
If the packaging, card details, physical appearance or seller context leave you uncertain, Pokémon Support suggests asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate potentially counterfeit cards. This is an option for an additional opinion, not a Pokémon certification service or a guarantee of formal authentication. Pokémon’s cited guidance does not set out a validated scoring system for combining these checks, so do not treat several matching clues as a certified result.

Official listing versus authentic item
An official gallery image or database entry establishes that Pokémon lists a product or card design; it cannot, by itself, establish that a particular sealed product or loose card is genuine. Pokémon’s published guidance offers practical reference checks and an escalation suggestion, but it does not describe a formal authentication protocol for individual items. No counterfeit-rate percentage is provided in the cited official guidance.
