Start with the console’s exact system software version, but do not treat that number as a jailbreak test. On a PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the version exactly as shown. Eligibility depends on the particular jailbreak method, its exploit chain, supported firmware range, console configuration and sometimes media requirements.
Before changing anything, compare that complete configuration with current documentation for the named method, then read the PlayStation software agreement and warranty that apply in your country. If the method’s documentation does not clearly cover your exact version and hardware, the responsible result is unconfirmed—not “yes” or “no.”

Check the installed PS5 system software version
The version lookup is an official, non-invasive check. It does not install files, run an exploit or change the console.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Write down the complete system software version, including every digit and decimal point.
PlayStation Support’s US instructions identify this screen as the place to view the installed version. The same screen can show Up to date when Sony considers the console to have the latest official release. That status only describes update currency; it does not indicate whether any jailbreak method works.

Record the result without altering the console
Take a photograph or write the version in a note before you continue. Keep the value as a precise string rather than rounding it or recording only the first two numbers. A method that supports one point release may not support a neighboring release, and documentation can change after a new Sony update.
Also note the console information that the method’s documentation asks for, such as a model identifier, whether the console has a disc drive, and the type of physical or removable media involved. Do not assume that two PS5s on the same firmware have identical requirements: model and media dependencies are method-specific, and a complete public matrix for all combinations has not been established.
Why a firmware number alone cannot prove eligibility
A PS5 “jailbreak” is not a single feature controlled by one universal firmware threshold. Each method relies on a particular vulnerability or exploit chain. The chain may require a specific browser or system entry point, a particular payload, a certain console configuration, or physical media. When Sony changes system software, one part of that chain can stop working even if another method remains viable.

For that reason, “my PS5 is on version X” is only the first input to a compatibility check. A headline claiming that a version is exploitable may describe a different method, a different model, an older build of the software, or a short-lived test. It may also omit a required disc, USB device or other condition. Treat a version claim as a lead to verify, not as permission to modify the console.
Three questions every compatibility claim must answer
- Which method? The project or exploit must be named. A range for one method cannot be transferred to another.
- Which software builds? The documentation should state the precise firmware range or individual versions, not merely “old firmware” or “latest firmware.”
- Which hardware and media conditions? Check model, disc-drive status, required game or disc, removable media and any other stated dependency.
If one of those questions is unanswered, eligibility remains unconfirmed. Do not fill the gap with a forum comment, a video title or a list copied from an unrelated exploit.
Compare your version with method-specific documentation
After recording the version, identify the exact project you are considering and read its current documentation or release notes. Look for a compatibility section that names firmware, console conditions and required media. The documentation should be recent enough to account for changes since your console’s software was released.
- Copy the method name and documentation date. This prevents a claim about one exploit from being confused with another.
- Match the entire version string. Check whether your exact build is listed, not merely a nearby major or minor number.
- Check prerequisites separately. Confirm model, disc-drive or disc requirements, payload method and any media requirement.
- Look for exclusions. A project may support only certain models, regions, launch conditions or entry points.
- Read release notes and warnings. A newer release can add support, remove a path or change the required sequence without changing the project’s name.
- Stop when the evidence is ambiguous. If the documentation says “may work,” omits your model or does not identify the tested range, classify the result as unconfirmed.
Do not attempt an installation merely to find out. The purpose of this comparison is to make a decision before any unofficial file, payload or hardware is used.

What the currently cited compatibility evidence actually shows
The available sources illustrate why method and date matter, but they do not form a universal compatibility table.

The 7.00–13.60 range should therefore be read as a time-stamped Relapse claim, not as a general PS5 jailbreak range. Tom’s Hardware also noted that firmware requirements were changing quickly. A later release, an unlisted model condition or a different exploit chain can change the answer.
Because the cited material does not supply a complete method-by-method table, no honest checker can convert one firmware number into a universal “jailbreakable” label. The correct output is conditional: confirmed for this named method and configuration, not supported by the current documentation, or unconfirmed because a required detail is missing.
How to interpret the result
Confirmed for a named method
Use this label only when the project’s current documentation explicitly includes your exact firmware and the listed console and media prerequisites match your hardware. “Confirmed” means documentation alignment; it is not a guarantee that the procedure will succeed on every unit or that the software is safe, permanent or supported by Sony.
Not supported by the documentation
If your exact version falls outside the stated range, or your model or media does not meet a mandatory condition, treat the method as unsupported. Do not substitute a neighboring firmware number or a different project’s range.
Unconfirmed
Use this category when the documentation is silent, contradictory, outdated or dependent on a condition you cannot verify. An unconfirmed result is a reason to pause, not an invitation to experiment. Wait for a clear statement from the project or choose to leave the console unmodified.
Check hardware and media dependencies before doing anything else
Firmware is only one compatibility axis. A method can require a particular PS5 model, a disc drive, a specific disc or another physical medium. The available sources do not establish values for every model and disc combination, so avoid universal claims such as “all launch consoles work” or “every digital edition is excluded.” Those statements need method-specific evidence.

Build a configuration record
- Exact system software version from Console Information.
- Model identifier or other hardware detail requested by the method’s documentation.
- Whether the console is a disc edition or a digital edition.
- Any disc, USB or other media requirement named by the project.
- The date and version of the documentation you used.
Keep this record with a screenshot of the official version screen. If a project later changes its requirements, you can tell whether the change affects your console rather than relying on memory.
Understand the legal and warranty limits
Jailbreaking can conflict with the software licence and warranty terms that apply to your console. The precise law and contract depend on your country, so the following points are deliberately separated by jurisdiction.
US software agreement
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement, shown as version 1.12 in the cited material, prohibits several forms of circumvention. It states:
"You may not (i) use any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with System Software; (ii) use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism; (iii) reinstall earlier versions of the System Software ("downgrading");"
The same agreement describes possible actions if Sony determines that its terms were violated, including disabling some or all software or online or offline console use, ending PlayStation service access, or denying warranty, repair or other services. Those are terms of the cited US agreement; they are not a prediction that every console will receive every listed action, and they are not universal legal advice.
US hardware warranty
The US PS5 warranty excludes certain damage associated with unlicensed peripherals, unauthorized modification without written permission, and service or opening by anyone other than Sony or an authorized provider. It also says Sony may void the warranty if it reasonably believes the console was used in violation of a separate software agreement. Read the warranty supplied for your region rather than assuming the US wording applies elsewhere.
UK update guidance
PlayStation Support’s UK update guidance warns that update data obtained through methods or sources other than those Sony describes can create problems. It says an altered console or unofficial update method might prevent the console from operating properly or installing official updates, and may affect warranty or repair-service eligibility. This is UK guidance, not a worldwide warranty rule.

What these terms mean for your decision
Checking a version is low risk; applying an unofficial modification is a separate decision with contractual, service and reliability consequences. If warranty coverage, official repairs, online access or dependable future updates matter to you, those costs belong in the decision before any modification. Do not assume that returning to stock software will restore coverage or erase evidence of a modification.
Reliability and update risks
Sony’s guidance indicates that an altered console may fail to operate properly or accept official updates. A modification can therefore affect more than the initial experiment: game compatibility, system maintenance and access to support may all become harder to manage. The available sources do not quantify failure rates, recovery time or the likelihood of a particular outcome, so no percentage or guarantee can be responsibly given.

The version-check process requires none of those actions. If a guide tells you to downgrade before eligibility is established, it is not following the cautious procedure described here and may conflict with the US licence terms quoted above.
A pre-modification decision checklist
Complete this checklist while the PS5 is still in its current state:
- Version captured: You recorded the exact value shown at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Method named: You know which project or exploit the claim refers to.
- Documentation current: You checked the project’s current documentation and release notes, including their date.
- Exact match: Your full firmware string appears in the stated range or version list.
- Hardware matched: Your model, disc-drive status and any other configuration requirements fit.
- Media verified: You have confirmed any required disc, USB device or other medium from the project’s own instructions.
- Evidence classified: The result is confirmed, unsupported or unconfirmed; you have not treated an ambiguous claim as approval.
- Regional terms read: You reviewed the PlayStation software agreement and warranty for your country.
- Service trade-off accepted: You understand that unofficial modification can affect operation, updates, warranty, repairs or service access.
If any box is unchecked, stop at the information-gathering stage. There is no technical advantage to proceeding with an uncertain compatibility claim.

Using only the first digits of the version

Applying one project’s range to another project
Mistake: Seeing a Relapse report and assuming etaHEN or an unrelated exploit supports the same versions.
Correction: Keep each claim attached to its named method. The dated 7.00–13.60 report applies to Relapse as described by Tom’s Hardware, not to all jailbreaks.
Trusting an undated compatibility list
Mistake: Following a table without a publication date, release identifier or source.

A simple decision path
- If you cannot reach Console Information or cannot read the complete version, resolve that information problem first.
- If the exact version is listed by the named method and all hardware and media prerequisites match, record the result as method-specific compatibility and then decide whether the legal, warranty and reliability risks are acceptable.
- If the version is outside the method’s range, treat that method as unsupported.
- If the version or configuration is not addressed clearly, treat eligibility as unconfirmed and do not proceed.
- If the terms or service consequences are unacceptable, leave the console unmodified regardless of technical compatibility.
What this check can—and cannot—tell you
It can tell you the official system software version currently installed and help you compare that value with a named project’s published requirements. It can also expose missing information before you risk the console.
It cannot guarantee that a jailbreak will work, establish a universal firmware threshold, confirm support for every PS5 model, predict Sony’s response, or restore warranty and service eligibility after an alteration.
