What cross-play and cross-progression mean
Cross-play lets people playing on different supported platforms play together. Cross-progression lets a player carry game progress between supported platforms, usually under conditions defined by the game. A statement confirming one feature does not confirm the other.

Look for explicit wording such as “cross-play,” “crossplay,” or “cross-platform” for multiplayer, and “cross-progression,” “cross-save,” or shared-progress language for saves. If the official page says nothing about one of these, treat that feature as unconfirmed—not as included.
Check the exact game and platform versions
Start by naming the game, the version you and your friend are using, and the platforms you want to connect. “PS5” can mean a native PS5 version or a PS4 version running on a PS5; those may have different matchmaking or save-transfer rules. Also note the game edition, since some titles impose edition-specific conditions.

PlayStation says PS4 and PS5 players can play together depending on the game, with support provided by the developer. That is cross-generation multiplayer, not proof of PC or Xbox cross-play. Check the title’s own current platform list and wording rather than relying on a general “cross-platform” label. Use official sources in this order
- Open the game’s PlayStation Store listing. Check its online multiplayer details and any stated platform or subscription conditions. A listing may not identify every compatible platform pair.
- Read the official game FAQ. Search for “cross-play,” “crossplay,” “cross-platform,” “cross-progression,” “cross-save,” and “account linking.” Record the platforms named and any conditions.
- Check the publisher or developer support page. Use it to clarify account requirements, platform exclusions, setup, and troubleshooting. Follow the instructions for the exact title.
- Check the game’s settings and invite flow. Cross-play may require a setting or an enabled invite option. Use the menu path given by the game’s official instructions.
- Check online access requirements separately. See the game’s Store listing for any PS Plus requirement. A subscription requirement is not the same as cross-play eligibility.
Features and account rules can change. When the answer matters for a purchase or a planned session, note the date and region of the official page you checked and confirm that it still describes the current version.
Verify cross-play, including settings and invites
Look for a direct statement that the game supports multiplayer between the platforms you care about—not merely “online multiplayer.” Confirm any platform exclusions, matchmaking limits, and whether cross-play must be enabled. If the wording only says “supported platforms,” find the page or in-game list that names them.

For example, PlayStation’s US Split Fiction FAQ says cross-play works on supported platforms and includes Friend’s Pass. It also gives this title-specific path for enabling cross-play invites: Options → Privacy Settings. This is an example of a setting to verify, not a universal PS5 menu path. The FAQ does not establish that Split Fiction supports cross-progression.
System-level PS5 invite or join features can help players join game groups, but they do not establish that a particular game supports cross-platform play. Check the game’s compatibility statement as well as its invite settings. PlayStation’s instructions for joining a game on PS5 also point players to the relevant game and online-play details.
Verify cross-progression and account linking separately
For cross-progression, find an explicit statement about shared progress, then check exactly what carries over and between which platforms. Do not assume that a linked account transfers every save, item, purchase, or entitlement. Look for requirements such as signing into a publisher account, linking a specific platform account, using the same account on both devices, or completing a one-time setup.

Account-linking instructions vary by game. PlayStation says PC account linking may happen during sign-in or through a prompt, and that the process differs between games. Follow the exact title’s current instructions and verify in-game that the intended account is connected. See PlayStation’s PC gaming support page.
Horizon Hunters Gathering illustrates why the condition matters: PlayStation’s US FAQ says cross-progression works when the player is logged in and saves using the same PlayStation account. That statement applies to this game, not to every PlayStation title. The same page describes the game as planned for PS5 and PC (Steam), with playtests and a release date to be announced; check its current status and terms on the official game page.
Keep cross-gen saves and cloud storage in their own category
A PS4 save that transfers to a PS5 version—or a save synchronized through PlayStation cloud storage—does not prove that progress can be used on PC or Xbox. Treat these as separate checks: whether PS4 and PS5 players can play together, whether a PS4 save can transfer to the PS5 version, and whether the game supports cross-progression across different platform families.

For PS5 saved-data sync status, PlayStation lists this path: Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Saved Data (PS5) → Sync Saved Data → View Sync Status. The game’s home screen may also offer Check Sync Status of Saved Data. These are PlayStation save-sync checks, not a test for cross-platform progression. Make a reliable yes-or-no check
- Cross-play: Does an official source name the platforms you want to match together? Are there settings, invite, edition, or matchmaking conditions?
- Cross-progression: Does an official source explicitly say progress carries between those platforms? What account must be used, and what progress is included?
- Cross-generation: Does the developer confirm PS4/PS5 multiplayer for this game? Is save transfer a separate process?
- Online access: Does the Store listing specify a PS Plus requirement for online play in your region?
- Freshness: Is the information current for the game’s release state, platform version, and region?
If you cannot find an explicit answer for a feature or platform pair, describe it as unconfirmed and ask the publisher’s support team. Do not convert missing information into a “yes” based on another feature’s support.
Examples show why title-level checks matter
Official pages can confirm one feature while leaving another unanswered. PlayStation’s Split Fiction FAQ describes cross-play and invite settings but does not establish cross-progression. Its Horizon Hunters Gathering FAQ describes both cross-play and conditional cross-progression, while also presenting the game as planned for PS5 and PC and discussing playtests. Neither example is a substitute for checking a different game, and announced details can change.
There is no single comprehensive current index established here for every game with cross-play or cross-progression. For any specific title, use its current official listing and FAQ, then resolve missing platform or account details with the publisher’s support page.
