How to Check Whether a Steam Demo Will Run on Your PC

Find the exact demo’s Steam requirements, compare them with your PC’s operating system and hardware, and use the result as a compatibility check—not a performance guarantee.

Open the Steam Store page for the exact demo, find System Requirements, and compare every listed minimum with your PC: operating system and version, 32- or 64-bit support, processor, RAM, graphics hardware and any stated DirectX or graphics API requirement, and free storage. A match is a useful screening check, not a guarantee that the demo will launch or run smoothly.

Check the demo’s own Steam Store page

Use the listing for the demo you plan to download, rather than assuming the full game or another demo build has identical requirements. On that page, scroll to System Requirements. Steam Support recommends checking both the game’s hardware requirements and its supported operating systems: Game is not available on your current platform.

Listings differ in the platforms and details they publish. A demo may list Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, while another lists only some of those platforms. Examples include The Membrane Demo, Pinoptic Demo, and the Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes demo. Treat these as examples of listing formats, not substitutes for the target demo’s requirements.

Compare every listed requirement with your PC

Read the complete minimum list for the operating system you use. Compare like with like rather than judging by one component, such as the graphics card.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Operating system: Check that your OS and version are supported. Notice whether the listing requires a 64-bit OS; Steam calls this out as a requirement worth checking.
  • Processor: Compare the listed CPU model or stated minimum with your processor.
  • Memory: Compare the required RAM with the amount installed.
  • Graphics: Check the GPU model and any stated graphics API or DirectX requirement. A GPU name alone may not answer whether a required API is supported.
  • Storage: Make sure you have at least the listed free space available.

If a requirement is missing, unclear, or difficult to match to your hardware—particularly a GPU model, API, architecture, or OS version—treat the result as uncertain. Don’t turn incomplete information into a definite pass.

Find your Windows PC’s specifications

  1. Open Settings > System > About to check your Windows version and basic device specifications.
  2. Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. On the System tab, look under System Information for the DirectX version. Use the Display tab to see graphics-device information for comparison.
  3. Return to the demo’s requirements and compare the details you found with each listed minimum. Microsoft’s instructions for checking DirectX are available at Which version of DirectX is on your PC?.

If the listing names a GPU or feature and your PC’s details do not make clear whether it meets that requirement, the comparison cannot establish compatibility. Ask the developer for clarification rather than assuming the closest-sounding model or feature is sufficient.

Interpret “minimum” as a screening threshold

Meeting the listed minimum does not promise smooth performance or a trouble-free launch. Steam says that a machine at or near a game’s requirements may experience performance or launch issues; see Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’. The page’s requirements can also change if the developer updates the listing or demo. Drivers, exact hardware variants, settings, and the software environment may affect the result, so the comparison is an estimate rather than a universal guarantee.

If you’re checking a Steam Deck

Use the Deck compatibility details as well as the relevant system requirements. Steam assigns reviewed titles one of four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. The store page can explain which Verified conditions a Playable or Unsupported title does not meet. Unknown means Steam has not tested compatibility; it is not a negative verdict. Deck Verified also assesses usability and system support, so it is a Deck-specific signal, not a general benchmark for Windows PCs. See Steam’s Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide and Deck Verified.
