For a Nintendo eShop preorder in North America, Nintendo charges no sooner than seven days before the listed release date. You can cancel before payment is processed and the game is preloaded; after payment, Nintendo’s US policy says digital purchases are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. A delay is not documented as an automatic refund trigger, so check the game’s current regional listing and your Nintendo Account terms.

When does Nintendo charge for an eShop preorder?

For Nintendo eShop accounts in North America, Nintendo processes the full payment no sooner than seven days before the game’s listed release date. After payment, the game is preloaded to the console, but it cannot be played until its release date and any required small unlocking update. The timing and process described here are Nintendo’s North American support guidance; check the listing and terms for your account’s region. Nintendo Support’s preorder and preload FAQ

Can you cancel a Nintendo eShop preorder?

In North America, Nintendo says you may cancel before payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Its cancellation guidance identifies the eligible window as seven days or longer before release. Because payment is processed no sooner than seven days before launch, check the preorder in the account that placed it and cancel as soon as you decide not to keep it.

  1. Open Nintendo eShop on the console using the Nintendo Account that placed the preorder.
  2. Open the account’s preorder list and select the game.
  3. Cancel while the preorder is still eligible, before payment processing and preload.

Nintendo says a canceled preorder may be placed again before launch or purchased after launch. If the preorder was canceled because payment failed or of an account-related issue, check the payment method and account status before trying again. Nintendo’s preorder FAQ and cancellation instructions

What if the game is delayed after Nintendo has charged you?

First, check the game’s eShop listing and Nintendo’s official news or support pages for your region to see whether the release date has changed. Nintendo’s reviewed North American preorder and refund pages do not promise that a delayed release automatically cancels a paid preorder or generates a refund. That does not resolve every individual order or legal situation; contact Nintendo Support through your regional channel if the listing, preorder status, or charge appears inconsistent.

If the game is still unavailable on the planned date

Nintendo Japan’s support guidance says a paid preorder that is not playable on its planned release date may have had its release date changed. It advises checking the eShop or Nintendo’s official site for the latest date, then refreshing preorder information on the console using Software Update → Via the Internet. This is Japan-specific guidance; the cited North American FAQ does not confirm that same procedure for every North American case. Nintendo Japan’s preorder support guidance

Can you get a refund after payment?

Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” The stated exceptions matter: Nintendo may authorize a refund, and applicable law may require one. Ask Nintendo Support about the specific order and consult the rules that apply where you live; neither a request nor a delay guarantees a refund. Nintendo’s Digital products refund policy

Why your Nintendo Account region matters

Preorder cancellation and refund rights are not identical worldwide. For example, Nintendo Spain describes a 14-day withdrawal right for preorder contracts subject to conditions for digital content, as well as a separate voluntary right to cancel before the non-playable version downloads. Those Spain/EU-facing terms should not be applied to a US account. Check the terms and support information for the region of the Nintendo Account that placed the order.
