There is no Steam-wide guarantee that a Free Weekend save will survive. Whether you can resume later depends on the individual game’s save system, whether the save remains on your computer or has synchronized to Steam Cloud, and what the publisher says about that event. A game can stop launching when the free entitlement ends while still retaining a save for the day you buy it.
Before the event closes, check the game’s current announcement, look for the Steam Cloud indicator on its store page, inspect the game’s Cloud setting in Steam, and finish a successful synchronization. Treat the Cloud logo as evidence that the game uses Cloud, not as proof that every progress file is included. Steam says developers choose which files are uploaded and that many games do not use Cloud for saves at all. Steam’s Steam Cloud FAQ explains those limits.

First separate two different questions
Players often ask whether their progress will “carry over,” but that phrase combines two independent issues:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Can the game still be launched after the Free Weekend? The free entitlement may end, requiring you to purchase the game to continue playing.
- Does the save still exist? A save can remain on the computer or in Steam Cloud even when the temporary right to launch the game has expired.
Buying the full game does not recreate a deleted save, and a retained save does not give you a permanent right to play. Check both conditions in the publisher’s event terms. The wording can differ from one title and one event to another.

This distinction also explains why two players can report different results. One may have purchased the game but deleted a local save, while another may still have an intact Cloud copy but cannot open the game until buying it. Access is an entitlement controlled by the event; retention is a file-management question controlled by the game and the way Steam synchronization was configured.
What Steam Cloud does—and does not—tell you
Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Steam Cloud logo in the feature area. It is a useful first check, but it is not a guarantee that your campaign, profile, settings, or other progress file is covered. Steam states that developers can “completely customize how The Steam Cloud is used for their games, including which user files are uploaded.” A game might synchronize only configuration files, use a different save system, or omit a particular mode’s data.
Steam also says that many games do not use Steam Cloud to store save games. If Cloud is disabled or the game does not integrate its save files, the newest progress may exist only on the computer where you played. That local copy can be lost when the game is uninstalled, when a drive is replaced, or when a cleanup utility removes its save directory.
Cloud is therefore one part of the answer. You still need the game’s own instructions or a direct statement from its developer about which files are supported and whether Free Weekend progress is intentionally retained.
Even with Cloud enabled, synchronization is not instantaneous proof that every file is safe. A title can upload one set of files while leaving another outside its configured list. For example, a settings file might appear on a second device while the actual campaign remains local. Confirm the supported files with the developer when the announcement is vague, especially if the game has separate single-player, co-op, profile, or mode-specific saves.
Check the game’s event terms before the weekend ends
Publishers normally describe the end condition in the Free Weekend announcement, the game’s Steam news feed, or an official support page. Read the current notice for the exact event rather than relying on a general assumption about Steam weekends.
- Open the game’s store page. From Steam, search for the title and open its main store listing. Follow the link to the developer or publisher’s latest announcement if one is shown.
- Find the Free Weekend dates and cutoff time. A title may stop accepting new sessions at a stated time even if the store page still shows the event banner for a while.
- Look for purchase language. Phrases such as “purchase to continue” answer the access question, not necessarily the save question.
- Look for a save-retention statement. The strongest wording explains that progress will carry over after purchase and identifies any condition, such as the save needing to remain available.
- Note exceptions. The announcement may limit carry-over to a particular platform, mode, region, account, or version. Do not extend a title-specific promise to another game.
If the current event notice does not discuss saves, the safest conclusion is “not established.” Ask the developer through its official support channel or community rather than treating the absence of a warning as a promise.

Save a copy of the announcement or note its date and wording while the event is active. Publishers can issue later updates, and a statement for one Free Weekend may not govern a future event. The date matters because a title-specific promise is evidence for that event, not a permanent Steam policy.
Verify Cloud in the Steam client
Use both the store page and the client settings. Labels can move slightly as Steam updates, but the relevant controls are in these locations:
- In your Library, right-click the game (or select its gear icon).
- Choose Properties, then open the General tab.
- Check the per-game option for keeping game saves in Steam Cloud. Leave it enabled if the game supports Cloud and you want Steam to synchronize it.
- Open Steam’s global Settings and check the Cloud section. Confirm that the setting allowing Steam Cloud synchronization is enabled.
A disabled global setting can prevent synchronization even when the store page advertises Cloud. Conversely, enabling the setting cannot make a non-Cloud game upload local saves. The developer controls the game’s integration and the file list.
Check these settings on the account and computer where you actually played. If you use multiple Steam accounts, verify the account name before assuming a missing save is a synchronization failure. Also make sure you are checking the same app entry rather than a demo, test branch, or separate edition; a save associated with one app may not be recognized by another.

The most reliable time to resolve a Cloud problem is before the Free Weekend expires, while the computer containing your progress is still available.
- Connect to the internet and launch the game on the device where you played.
- Save normally through the game’s own menu. If it has several save slots, make sure the slot you care about is the one written most recently.
- Exit the game normally. Do not force-close Steam or shut down while the client is still processing the save.
- Watch the game’s Library entry for the Cloud status and wait until synchronization reports completion.
- If Steam presents a synchronization error or a choice between local and Cloud versions, stop and investigate. Do not dismiss the warning and launch on another device.
Steam warns that launching after an unsuccessful upload can create a conflict or leave you with an older version. If the original computer still contains the newest save, keep it intact while you resolve the error. A successful upload from that computer is usually safer than allowing an empty or old save from another device to replace it.
Do not assume that closing the game is enough. Leave Steam running until its status changes to synchronized, and avoid putting the computer to sleep during the upload. If the client reports an error, record the message and retain the original files before trying alternatives. Repeatedly launching on several devices can create more versions and make it harder to identify the newest one.

Understand the main outcomes
| Event and save condition | What happens when the Free Weekend ends | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| The event requires purchase; the save is in Cloud and synchronization completed | The game may stop launching until you buy it, but the synchronized save can generally be available after purchase on the same Steam account, subject to the game’s implementation. | Buy the title if you want to continue, then allow Steam to download the save before launching. |
| The event requires purchase; the save is local-only | The free access can end while the save remains only on the original computer. Uninstalling or deleting that data can remove your route back to it. | Keep the installation and local save until you have checked the developer’s backup instructions. |
| Cloud is advertised, but the progress file is not included | Steam may synchronize other files without your actual progress. | Ask the developer which files Cloud covers; do not rely on the logo alone. |
| A sync error or unresolved version conflict exists | The newest progress may not have uploaded, and choosing the wrong version can overwrite it. | Preserve the original device and resolve the conflict before opening the game elsewhere. |
| The event announcement says nothing about retention | Neither carry-over nor deletion is established by Steam’s platform rules. | Request a title-specific answer from the developer or consult its official support information. |
The table’s four checks are the useful comparison axes for any game: whether purchase is needed to keep playing, where the save is stored, whether the relevant progress files are included, and whether synchronization actually completed. A positive answer in one column does not substitute for the others.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Dinkum example: a conditional carry-over promise
A March 30, 2025 announcement for Dinkum illustrates how a publisher can separate access from retention. It said players had to purchase the game after the event to continue playing, and that progress would carry over after purchase “as long as your save data is still available.” The announcement is specific to that title and that dated event; it is not a rule for every Steam Free Weekend.
The same notice warned that uninstalling could cost progress when the save was stored only locally. That condition matters even when a publisher intends to preserve progress: a promise cannot restore a file that has been deleted. Read the latest announcement for the game you are playing rather than applying the Dinkum wording to another title. Dinkum’s March 30, 2025 announcement is the primary example.
Dinkum therefore demonstrates the safest way to interpret event language. “Purchase to continue” describes the cost or requirement for access; “progress will carry over as long as your save data is still available” describes retention and its condition. Look for both kinds of wording in the game you are testing.
What to do if the game is local-save only
First identify whether the game’s developer documents a local save location. Individual games can store saves in different folders, so do not assume that Steam’s Cloud directories are the game’s ordinary save directory.
Steam lists these default locations for files managed by Steam Cloud:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Those paths are not a universal map of local saves. A title may keep its working save under a user profile, a game-specific data directory, or another location documented by its developer. Copying the wrong folder will not protect your progress.

- Search the game’s official support pages for “save location,” “backup,” or “uninstall.”
- Close the game and Steam before copying files, so a write operation is not in progress.
- Copy the documented save folder to a separate location, preserving the original folder and its files.
- Do not edit or rename the backup unless the developer’s instructions require it.
- Keep the backup until you have launched the purchased game and confirmed that the correct progress appears.
If the developer does not publish a location, ask its support team. Steam Support says developers are the people who can clarify which files are integrated with Cloud and may need to help locate local saves. Steam Support also says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a game-specific Cloud conflict.
Preserving a local copy is especially important before uninstalling. The Free Weekend ending does not itself tell Windows, macOS, or Linux to preserve every game-created file, and an uninstall routine may remove the directory the title uses. Keep the original installation and backup until the purchased version has loaded the expected profile.
How to handle a Cloud conflict or missing progress
The original computer still has the save
Do not launch the game on a second device first. On the original computer, verify that the desired save loads in the game, exit normally, and retry synchronization. Check your connection and leave Steam open until the status changes. If Steam asks whether to use a local or Cloud copy, compare the timestamps and choose the copy that demonstrably contains the newest progress; when the choice is unclear, stop and contact the developer instead of guessing.
The game shows an older save on another device
Return to the original device and confirm whether the newer save is still present. If it is, make a backup and complete an upload from that device. Do not save new progress on the second device while the versions are unresolved, because a new save can make it harder to identify which copy was current.
The original device was uninstalled or is unavailable
Check whether the game had Cloud enabled and whether Steam reports a synchronized version. If the game was local-only, look for the backup or the developer’s documented recovery method. Steam cannot manufacture a missing local file, and a Free Weekend announcement cannot change that limitation.
The game launches but the progress is absent after purchase
Confirm that you bought and launched the same app on the same Steam account, that the game’s Cloud setting is enabled, and that Steam has finished downloading before you enter the game. Then consult the developer’s support instructions for save-file locations and account linking. Avoid creating a new save over the missing slot until support tells you what to do.

Steam keeps offering an old Cloud copy
Do not repeatedly accept the prompt without checking which version contains your progress. Return to the computer with the known-good save, preserve a backup, and allow that copy to synchronize. If the conflict remains, provide the developer with the game version, platform, account details it requests, and the exact Steam message. Steam Support identifies the developer as the party that can explain the game’s file integration and resolve title-specific conflicts.

Questions to answer before the countdown reaches zero
- Does the current event announcement say that purchase is required to continue?
- Does it explicitly promise that progress carries over, and what condition does it attach to that promise?
- Does the store page show Steam Cloud?
- Is Cloud enabled globally and in the game’s Properties > General settings?
- Does the developer confirm that the progress files—not merely settings—are included?
- Did the latest save synchronize successfully after you exited?
- If Cloud is unavailable, have you located and copied the game’s local save?
- Have you kept the original installation or backup until the purchased version displays the correct progress?
If any answer is unknown, treat the save as at risk and preserve the original data before the event ends. The practical rule is simple: a Free Weekend controls temporary access, while the game’s own save design and a completed synchronization determine whether your progress is still there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy the game to keep playing after a Steam Free Weekend?
Usually the temporary entitlement ends at the event’s stated cutoff, so the publisher may require a purchase to continue. Check the current event announcement; access requirements and save retention are separate questions.
Will Steam Cloud always save my Free Weekend progress?
No. The store-page Cloud logo only shows that the game uses Steam Cloud in some way. Developers choose which files are uploaded, and Steam says many games do not use Cloud for saves. Confirm that the specific progress files are covered and that synchronization completed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will I lose my save if I uninstall the game?
You can lose a local-only save if uninstalling removes its folder. Before uninstalling, follow the developer’s backup instructions and keep a copy. A Cloud copy may remain, but only if the game included the save and it synchronized successfully.
What should I do when Steam shows a Cloud conflict?
Stop launching on other devices, keep the computer with the newest save intact, and compare the local and Cloud versions. Back up the known-good files and resolve the error with the developer if the correct choice is unclear.
Where are Steam Cloud files stored?
Steam lists default Cloud locations as C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata on macOS, and ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata on Linux. These are not universal locations for a game’s ordinary local saves.
Can Steam Support recover a deleted save?
Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve game-specific Cloud conflicts. Contact the game’s developer for file-location and recovery guidance, and preserve any remaining local copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the Dinkum policy apply to every Free Weekend game?
No. Dinkum’s March 30, 2025 announcement is a title-specific example. It required purchase to continue and promised carry-over only while the save data remained available. Read the current announcement for your own game.
The Bottom Line
A Steam Free Weekend ending does not by itself determine what happens to your save. Verify the event’s purchase and carry-over wording, check whether the actual progress files—not just settings—use Steam Cloud, finish synchronization on the original computer, and preserve a local backup when Cloud coverage is uncertain. Keep that installation or backup until the purchased version opens with the correct progress.
