For the most reliable answer to “Is [player] playing today?”, check the official NFL injury report first, then check the team’s game-day inactive list close to kickoff. The weekly report gives practice participation and anticipated game status; the inactive list is the practical game-day confirmation.
Check the official injury report first
- Open the NFL.com injury report and select the current season, week, and relevant team or matchup.
- Find the player and read both the practice-participation and game-status fields. Note the report date: a status from earlier in the week may not reflect a later change.
- For a late update, check the team’s official news or social channels, especially if the player is listed as a game-time decision.
The NFL’s 2017 Game Status Report policy distinguishes practice reports from game-status reporting. “Did Not Participate,” “Limited,” and “Full” describe practice participation; they are not the final game-day inactive decision. The policy says the Game Status Report is intended to give the public an accurate description of anticipated availability for the next game.

Check the inactive list near kickoff
Look for the team’s game-day inactive list around 90 minutes before kickoff. NFL Football Operations says club public-relations representatives deliver the Game Day Administration Report, which includes the inactive list, at the pregame officials’ meeting. See Game and stadium prep.
If the player is listed as inactive, that is the clearest official confirmation that he is unavailable under the regular game-day designation. If he is not on the inactive list, you can say he is active or available for the game—but that does not guarantee he will start, take a snap, or have a particular workload.

Why a weekly status can change
The NFL’s 2026 reporting schedule sets regular-season Game Status Report deadlines by game day. For Sunday games, the scheduled report is due Friday by 4:00 p.m. New York time. That is a scheduled reporting deadline, not a promise that the information cannot change afterward: teams must report relevant changes to a player’s condition after the initial Game Status Report. Recheck close to kickoff.
The NFL’s 2017 policy also says that when a player appeared on the club’s Practice Report during the week but is absent from its Game Status Report, the club is certain he will play; if the club then deactivates him, it must provide an explanation. This describes that policy’s reporting framework, but checking the actual game-day inactive list remains the most direct way to confirm availability.

Do not confuse roster membership with game-day availability
“Active roster” can refer to the larger 53-player Active/Inactive List. For a particular game, the game-day active list is limited to 47 or 48 players, depending on the number of offensive linemen. NFL Football Operations explains the distinction in its contract language information. A player’s place on the team roster alone does not establish that he is active for that game.
Which source answers which question?
| Source | What it tells you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly NFL injury report | Practice participation and reported game status | Earlier in the week, as context about anticipated availability |
| Team game-day inactive list | Whether the player is inactive for that game | Close to kickoff, for the clearest practical confirmation |
For a live answer, you need the player’s name, team, matchup, and a fresh check of the official report and inactive list. Without those details, no source can establish the status of a particular player for a particular game.
