To check, sign in on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive, insert the game disc, and launch the game. If the title is eligible, the console may offer a digital license or show the entitlement in your library. The license remains linked to the qualifying disc, so you must keep it.
Which Xbox discs can qualify?
Microsoft’s feature applies to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, but eligibility is title-specific. It excludes Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs. Microsoft says availability can depend on technical, licensing, and publishing factors, and that titles may be added or removed; a game’s generation alone does not establish eligibility. See the Xbox product FAQ and Microsoft Services Agreement for current qualifications and terms.
At the feature’s announcement on August 26, 2026, Xbox said it was starting with thousands of titles and would add more over time. That announcement-era scope is not a guarantee that a particular disc qualifies today. Xbox said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games supported the feature; individual eligibility can still vary and change. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.
How to check a specific disc
- Use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X. A digital-only console cannot perform the disc insertion check.
- Sign in to the account that should receive the license.
- Insert the Xbox One or Series X disc and launch the game.
- Check for the console’s digital-license prompt. If the disc is supported, follow the prompt. Xbox also says the license may appear in your library after you claim or receive it.
- Keep the disc. The entitlement is conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.
Microsoft’s FAQ describes the prompt as the way to identify a supported disc, but the precise on-screen flow may vary. If no offer appears, do not infer eligibility from Smart Delivery, backward compatibility, or ownership of another edition. Check the current Xbox FAQ and try again after checking for console updates; there is no reliable title-independent rule that can confirm eligibility.

What the digital license does—and does not do
The entitlement is a separate digital license associated with a supported physical disc. It is not a way to separate the game license from the disc permanently: Microsoft says the license can be revalidated and may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the qualifying disc. It cannot be transferred independently. Selling or giving away the disc can therefore end access through that disc-linked license.
Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits apply where supported. Those features have their own game, market, and device requirements; a disc-linked license does not make every title available on every device. The license may also be limited to select markets, as described in Xbox’s product FAQ and Microsoft’s usage terms.

Disc-to-digital is different from Smart Delivery
Smart Delivery is a publisher-configured way to provide the appropriate game package for different Xbox generations. It does not, by itself, grant a disc-free digital license. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains that some Smart Delivery disc releases may rely on an online license to download a higher-generation package, while others include full disc support. Neither arrangement proves that a disc qualifies for the separate disc-to-digital feature. Microsoft’s Smart Delivery overview describes the package-delivery system.
Backward compatibility is also separate: playing a compatible disc-based game on a newer Xbox may still require inserting the disc for authentication. Disc-to-digital eligibility follows its own rules.

If the disc is not eligible
If the console does not offer the entitlement, the practical alternative is to obtain a separate digital license through the Xbox Store. Compare the cost of a digital copy with the benefit of keeping the disc-linked license, which requires continued possession of the disc. If you do not have an Xbox with an optical drive, you cannot check the disc directly on a digital-only console; access to compatible disc-reading hardware is required for this check.
