To verify FFmpeg is publishing to the intended YouTube stream, select that stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, compare its current stream URL and key with FFmpeg’s configured destination and credential, then start FFmpeg and confirm the incoming preview appears on that same stream. The preview shows that YouTube is receiving a feed; comparing the configuration is what checks which key FFmpeg is set to use.
Check the destination and key in YouTube Studio
- Select the intended stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then select the scheduled stream or stream configuration you want FFmpeg to publish to. Confirm the stream identity before copying credentials. Reusing settings can carry forward a previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so do not assume the selected stream is the one you last used. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings.
- Compare the server URL. In the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, copy the stream URL (also called the server or RTMP server in some encoder interfaces). Compare it with the destination configured for FFmpeg. Do not rely on an old command or a URL copied from a different scheduled stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the server URL and stream key.
- Compare the stream key. Copy the key for that selected stream and compare it with the key in FFmpeg’s configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, support posts, or shell history.
- Start FFmpeg and check the preview. Watch the intended stream’s preview in Live Control Room for the incoming feed. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting the event; its streaming tips cover that workflow. A preview is evidence that the selected stream is receiving media, but it does not display or independently prove the literal key value configured in FFmpeg.
Check the URL for your streaming protocol
The server URL must match the protocol FFmpeg is configured to use. For ordinary RTMP or RTMPS, use the corresponding URL shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room. If an RTMPS connection fails, YouTube says the Live Control Room may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL instead. Port 443 is a troubleshooting setting YouTube identifies when needed. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
For an HLS workflow, the encoder must support HLS, the key must be configured for HLS, and the destination is an HTTPS ingestion URL. Do not substitute an RTMP/RTMPS URL in an HLS setup. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
If FFmpeg does not appear in the intended stream
- FFmpeg reports a startup error: Re-copy the current key from the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, replace the configured key, and retry. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into the encoder and starting the encoder again.
- No incoming preview appears: Recheck both the server URL and key against the selected stream. Then inspect FFmpeg’s output and the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder-side issues from outbound connection problems.
- The preview appears on a different stream: Stop and verify the stream selected in Live Control Room and the destination/key pair configured in FFmpeg. A preview belongs to the selected stream receiving it; it is not a substitute for checking which stream’s credentials are in the local configuration.
- An RTMPS SSL or connection problem occurs: Make sure FFmpeg uses the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube rather than assuming the default RTMP URL is correct. If needed, check YouTube’s port 443 troubleshooting recommendation.
- You are using HLS: Verify HLS support in the encoder and use the HLS key and HTTPS ingestion URL associated with that workflow.
- The key may have been exposed or reset: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg’s configured key and any other authorized encoder configuration that used the old value. YouTube notes that channel owners or managers can reset keys.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo can run that stream without leaving a computer or home connection on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
