Use YouTube’s Stats for nerds overlay while the problem is happening, then compare the same video and device during busy and quiet hours. The dropped-frame counter confirms that playback frames were dropped; buffer health, resolution and connection data help describe the conditions. None of these measurements alone proves that an Indian ISP or peak-hour congestion caused the problem.
Capture playback evidence while the issue is happening
- Set a baseline. Pick a video and device. Note the time, whether you are on Wi-Fi, mobile data or Ethernet, the selected quality, and what you observe: jerky motion, buffering, a drop in picture quality, or a combination.
- Open Stats for nerds. On a desktop, start the video, right-click the player and select “Stats for nerds.” On a TV, open the player settings and enable the overlay. YouTube also supports casting when the overlay is enabled on the mobile device. YouTube’s instructions for Stats for nerds describe the available playback diagnostics.
- Save a screenshot or photo. Capture the overlay during the slowdown or stutter, not after playback recovers. Include enough of the screen to identify the time and the relevant counters.
Which Stats for nerds fields to record
Write down the time and these fields together. Their combination is more useful than any single number.
- Viewport / Frames: record the dropped-frame count. An increasing count confirms that frames were dropped during playback, but does not identify the cause.
- Current / Optimal Res: shows the current playback resolution alongside YouTube’s optimal resolution. A change in current resolution can indicate that adaptive quality selection has lowered or raised quality.
- Buffer Health: shows how much video is buffered ahead. A falling buffer or rebuffering alongside a stall makes inadequate or variable delivery more plausible.
- Connection Speed and Network Activity: record both as context for the playback conditions. They are not a complete measurement of YouTube delivery over the session.
YouTube’s Stats for nerds help page explains the overlay. A published study of YouTube mobile streaming analyzed 11,142 individual video measurements, illustrating why playback conditions are assessed through multiple measurements rather than a single counter. The study does not establish what caused a particular viewer’s frame drops.
Compare peak and off-peak sessions fairly
Repeat the observation on the same device and video during a busy evening and a quieter period. Keep the connection type and quality setting as similar as practical, and repeat on more than one occasion. One run may be affected by momentary Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic, or changes in the video’s delivery route.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Comparison | What to keep or change | What it can help show |
|---|---|---|
| Time of day | Same device, video and connection; compare busy and quieter periods. | Whether symptoms repeatedly coincide with a particular time. |
| Connection type | Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or wired Ethernet where practical. | Whether the Wi-Fi setup or first connection is a plausible contributor. |
| Playback symptoms | Record dropped frames, buffer health, stalls and resolution changes together. | Whether the issue looks more like dropped rendering frames, interrupted delivery, adaptive quality changes, or a mix. |
| Device or app | Where possible, compare the same content on another device or app. | Whether the problem may be specific to a device, browser, app or decoding load. |
Check Wi-Fi and other local causes
Before blaming the ISP, try moving closer to the router, reducing competing network use and comparing Wi-Fi with mobile data or Ethernet if available. If playback improves on another connection, the original connection or its local conditions become more plausible contributors. If dropped frames continue across connections, consider device performance, browser or app behavior, decoding load, or a video-specific issue as well.
YouTube’s troubleshooting advice is to change your Internet connection, then replay your video. Its guidance also recommends checking router range and interference when troubleshooting Wi-Fi. See YouTube’s connection and Wi-Fi advice.

Use speed tests as supporting evidence, not a verdict
TRAI MySpeed provides a network test; its web tester describes measurements of download speed, upload speed and latency. Run it near the time of a playback observation if useful, and note the result with the time and connection type. A speed test is a snapshot, not a measurement of YouTube delivery throughout the viewing session.
YouTube lists approximate recommended sustained speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K, 5 Mbps for HD 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for HD 720p, 1.1 Mbps for SD 480p and 0.7 Mbps for SD 360p. These are resolution benchmarks from YouTube Help, not proof that a connection sustained the required throughput at every moment. See YouTube’s resolution speed guidance.

Interpret the pattern without overclaiming
- Dropped frames rise while buffer health stays steady and resolution does not change: playback frames are being dropped, but that pattern can also fit device decoding or rendering trouble, or app behavior. The counter is not a network diagnosis.
- The buffer drains, playback stalls or quality falls at the same time: variable or insufficient timely delivery becomes more plausible. Repeat the comparison on another connection and at another time.
- Wi-Fi is worse than another connection: investigate signal range, interference and local network load before attributing the issue to the ISP.
- Wi-Fi and mobile data show similar symptoms: this still does not identify a common cause. Device or app behavior, a video-specific problem, or coincident provider conditions remain possible.
- A speed test looks adequate: treat it as one time-specific result, not proof that YouTube’s path remained clear for the whole session.
YouTube notes that live-stream delay and interruptions can involve congestion and other factors, even on a good network. The playback overlay does not reveal the entire delivery path or which segment caused a symptom. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance provides context, but does not diagnose an individual viewer’s route.
What Indian network reports can—and cannot—tell you
TRAI’s published telecom performance reports describe aggregate service indicators. They can provide broader context about reported service performance, but they do not establish why one viewer’s YouTube playback is stuttering at a particular time. TRAI’s performance-indicator report catalog is not an individual YouTube diagnosis.

Similarly, an IETF 120 presentation in 2024 reported rebuffering in 30% of TCP sessions and 30% of QUIC sessions in its GEO satellite-network measurements. Those figures concern that presentation’s satellite-network measurements—not India, mobile networks generally or household broadband generally. The presentation’s test set covered 208 distinct videos across 16 categories, with 13 videos per category. Read the IETF presentation.
