Check the exact graphics device in your handheld, then compare it with AMD’s published requirements and the game’s own support. AMD now calls FSR 4 FSR Upscaling. Its current eligibility statement names Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, with RX 6000 Series support planned for 2027. It does not expressly confirm support for the integrated Radeon graphics in Ryzen Z handheld processors, so an AMD chip or an RDNA architecture label alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
The practical answer depends on more than the handheld’s brand or processor family. You need to know which graphics device is in the exact model, whether the game supports the feature you mean, and which graphics driver the handheld maker supports. Identify the exact model and graphics device
Start with the handheld maker’s specifications page, product documentation, or the system information and Device Manager on the device. Record the full handheld model and the name of its graphics device. A processor name and a graphics-device name are related, but they are not interchangeable: the processor may contain integrated graphics, while AMD’s published FSR Upscaling eligibility statement specifically names graphics-card families.

If the manufacturer’s product page gives only the processor model, use that exact processor name to find its AMD specification. AMD’s Ryzen Z series page lists graphics architectures for handheld processors. For example, AMD lists Ryzen Z1 Extreme with RDNA 3 integrated graphics; its Z-series table lists Z2 Extreme with RDNA 3.5 graphics and Z2 Go and Z2 A with RDNA 2. These examples help identify what is in a device, but they do not by themselves answer whether AMD officially supports FSR Upscaling on that integrated GPU.
Be precise when recording the result. “AMD graphics” is not enough to compare with a requirements page. Preserve the full processor or GPU name, and do not infer that two handhelds have the same support status simply because both use Ryzen Z processors. If the specifications are unclear, ask the maker to confirm the integrated GPU in the exact model and configuration.

AMD GPUOpen’s FSR SDK likewise describes FSR Upscaling 4 as requiring an RX 7000 or RX 9000 Series discrete GPU or better. Read those statements as written: they refer to named graphics-card families, not every GPU that shares an AMD architecture-generation label.

Check the particular game and feature
Device eligibility alone is not enough. FSR features require support in the game, so check the title you actually want to play rather than assuming that a system-level feature will be available in every game. Start with the game’s graphics settings or support information, then consult AMD’s supported-games page for the relevant feature and any driver-based upgrade route.
Distinguish a game’s own FSR integration from AMD’s driver-based upgrade method. AMD’s supported-games page states prerequisites for that driver route: the game must have standard FSR integration and use DirectX 12. AMD lists FSR 3.1 as the minimum for FSR Upscaling and FSR 3.1.4 as the minimum for FSR Frame Generation on Windows 11. These are version thresholds for that method, not a general statement that every game with any older FSR version qualifies.

The supported-games page also distinguishes RX 9000 availability from RX 7000 Upscaling-only availability and lists required driver versions. Check the current entry for your specific title, graphics device, driver, and feature rather than relying on an old list or a summary of a different game. Meeting a listed threshold establishes only that the stated compatibility conditions may be met; it does not promise a particular image quality, frame rate, or performance result.

Use the handheld maker’s driver and update instructions
Follow the device maker’s supported route for operating-system and graphics-driver updates. AMD’s Adrenalin 26.3.1 release notes, dated March 19, 2026, state: “AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices.” That is a specific warning against assuming the standard desktop Adrenalin package is the correct driver for a handheld.
Check the support page or update utility for the exact handheld model and use the driver path the maker documents. If AMD’s game list specifies a driver version, compare it with the driver version actually supported for your device. Do not assume that installing a newer desktop driver will make an unsupported handheld eligible, or that a handheld maker’s driver update automatically adds support for every FSR feature. The supported driver path, the GPU requirement, and the game requirement are separate checks.

Verify after updating
Once you have checked the device and installed updates through the maker’s supported route, open the particular game’s graphics settings. Look for the specific FSR option you want, and confirm whether it is available and enabled. A general “FSR” label may not tell you whether the game is offering the ML-based upscaler, frame generation, or an earlier spatial or temporal FSR option.

What “FSR 4” means now
AMD says: “FSR 4 has been renamed FSR Upscaling to better distinguish between the various features that now make up FSR ‘Redstone’.” In current AMD terminology, FSR 4 is called FSR Upscaling. FSR itself is an umbrella for multiple versions and functions, so a game or device that supports one FSR feature is not necessarily supporting all the others.
In particular, earlier spatial or temporal FSR support does not prove that a game or device supports the newer ML-based upscaler. Frame generation is another distinct feature. AMD’s current table separates spatial upscaling, temporal upscaling, ML-based upscaling, frame generation, and other features. When reading a game setting, support list, review, or product claim, identify the exact feature and version being discussed. A claim that simply says “FSR supported” is too broad to establish that the specific ML-based feature is available.

This distinction helps answer the common question, “Is FSR 4 the same as FSR 3?” The versions and capabilities are not interchangeable labels. FSR 4’s current name is FSR Upscaling, and older FSR support cannot be used as proof of ML-based FSR Upscaling compatibility. If a game has FSR 3 or another earlier feature, check whether the specific title and method meet AMD’s published requirements for the feature you want.
Why handheld compatibility needs a model-specific answer
AMD’s materials describe two different categories that are easy to conflate. The FSR Upscaling requirements name RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, while AMD’s Ryzen Z pages identify the integrated graphics architectures in handheld processors. The pages reviewed here do not expressly confirm Ryzen Z integrated GPUs as supported for FSR Upscaling, even where an architecture generation name also appears in desktop graphics products.
That is why answers based on a device brand or a broad processor family can be misleading. A ROG Ally, Legion Go, Steam Deck, or another handheld name may refer to more than one model or hardware configuration, and a brand name alone does not establish its exact graphics device. Do not give a blanket yes or no for one of those product families without checking the exact model, GPU, game, and current driver route. The question is not just “Does this brand use AMD?” but “Does this precise graphics device meet AMD’s published eligibility, and does this particular game and supported driver path expose the feature?”
Use careful wording when public documentation leaves the integrated GPU uncertain. For example: “AMD’s current published requirements list RX 7000/9000 graphics cards; they do not explicitly establish support for this handheld’s integrated GPU.” That reports what the documentation says without turning an unconfirmed status into either an official endorsement or a universal incompatibility claim. AMD’s published requirements also do not rule on every third-party or modified software approach. Such methods should not be described as manufacturer-supported compatibility.
For a definitive model-specific answer, ask the handheld maker or AMD about the exact handheld model and integrated GPU. Include the game, operating system, driver version, and FSR feature you want to use. If the answer relies on a particular driver-based upgrade route, mention that too. Those details give support staff a concrete configuration to check instead of a vague question about whether “FSR 4 works on handhelds.”

How to compare two handhelds for FSR
Do not compare devices by AMD branding alone. Compare each one against the same four questions:
- GPU: What exact integrated or discrete graphics device does it use, and does AMD explicitly list that type as eligible for ML-based FSR Upscaling? Record both the handheld model and graphics-device name. An architecture label is useful identification, not a substitute for an eligibility statement.
- Game: Does the particular title support the feature through its own integration, or is the intended method AMD’s driver-based upgrade route? If it is the driver route, check the game’s standard FSR integration, DirectX 12 requirement, applicable minimum version, and AMD’s current title listing.
- Driver path: Which operating system and graphics driver version does the handheld maker support? Compare that supported path with AMD’s current game and driver requirements. Remember AMD’s stated caveat that standard Adrenalin software does not include support for handheld gaming devices.
- Feature: Is the claim about ML-based FSR Upscaling, frame generation, or an earlier spatial or temporal FSR feature? A game may offer one without proving the availability of another.
A useful comparison statement gives the exact handheld model, graphics device, game, driver, and feature. If one of those details is unknown, mark that part as unconfirmed rather than declaring one model the winner based on a broad architecture label. Apply the same standard to both devices; otherwise the comparison may confuse a game-specific feature with GPU eligibility or a desktop driver option with the maker-supported handheld driver.

Do you need a driver update?
Possibly, but a driver update is only one part of the check. AMD’s supported-games page lists driver versions for its driver-based upgrade method, so an outdated or mismatched driver can matter for a title on that route. However, a driver update does not by itself prove that an integrated handheld GPU is eligible, that the game supports the feature, or that the handheld maker supports the driver package.
Check for updates through the handheld manufacturer’s instructions first. Then compare the installed or supported driver version with the current AMD entry for the game and feature. Because AMD says standard Adrenalin software does not include support for handheld gaming devices, do not treat a desktop Adrenalin download as the default solution. Start by identifying what is missing. Is the game lacking any FSR setting, is an FSR option present but not the ML-based upscaler, or is AMD’s driver-based upgrade feature unavailable? These are different situations, and each calls for checking a different part of the chain.
First confirm the game itself supports the particular feature. Then check AMD’s supported-games information if you are using its driver-based route, including the title’s stated integration and API requirements. Verify the exact GPU and driver combination, and confirm that the driver was obtained through the handheld maker’s supported update route. Finally, check the game settings again and make sure you are not mistaking an earlier FSR option for ML-based FSR Upscaling or frame generation.
If you have checked those items and the documentation still does not explicitly cover your integrated GPU, the remaining issue is model-specific confirmation. Contact the manufacturer or AMD with the full device, game, operating system, driver, and feature details. This is primarily a check for a device you already own: identify its GPU, game, and supported driver path before considering any purchase. An external GPU enclosure is not a general solution; it would be a conditional setup whose compatibility depends on the specific handheld and its connections, and it does not change the fact that AMD’s published handheld-integrated GPU support is not explicit.
