To check an RPG, search its exact title in Nintendo’s Switch-game compatibility checker, then look separately for a free update or a paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. A game can run on Switch 2 without having an upgrade, and an upgrade does not guarantee that every Switch game is compatible.
Check whether the base game runs
- Search the exact game title. Open Nintendo’s compatibility page and enter the RPG in the search box. Check the specific title rather than assuming that all games in a series behave alike.
- Read the status and any notes. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but some games may not be supported or may have partial functionality issues. A game that starts may still have a known limitation.
- Ask the publisher when the listing does not answer your question. Nintendo recommends contacting the publisher for specific compatibility information about third-party games. This is especially useful if you need to confirm how a particular feature or edition works.
- Recheck close to playing. Nintendo says testing and updates may change compatibility support; some games may take longer to become playable or may remain unsupported.

Check for an upgrade separately

Only selected games have free updates or paid upgrade packs, and their features differ by title. The base game’s compatibility status is a separate question from whether an enhancement exists. Nintendo describes how Switch 2 Edition bundles and upgrade packs work in its Switch 2 Edition upgrade instructions.
How Switch 2 Edition upgrades work
A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its upgrade pack. If you already own the original game, physically or digitally, Nintendo says selected upgrade packs can be obtained through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailers. Certain packs are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Check the individual game’s listing for its availability, price, and contents; do not assume that an upgrade pack exists for every compatible RPG.

The enhancement features included in a pack vary by game, and Switch 2 Edition features can only be played on Switch 2. If you have a regional copy or are considering a pack from another region, verify the match first: Nintendo says upgrade-pack compatibility across regions depends on the software. In an announcement dated May 29, 2025, Nintendo named Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet among the games scheduled to receive free Switch 2 enhancements on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s instructions said to connect the console to the internet and update its system before downloading the game updates. This is a dated example, not a complete or current list of Pokémon RPG upgrades. Check each game’s current official information rather than assuming another Pokémon title has the same update.

- Search the exact RPG in Nintendo’s compatibility checker and read any limitation notes.
- For a third-party title, consult its publisher if the checker does not settle a feature-specific question.
- Look separately for a free update or a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack in the game’s official information.
- Before obtaining a pack, confirm it matches your base game edition and region.
