Check the game’s current official requirements against your own PC, one requirement at a time, before buying. In Windows, use Settings > System > About for the operating system, processor, RAM and system type; Settings > System > Storage for free space; and dxdiag for the DirectX version. Then verify the actual graphics device, compare it with the game’s listed GPU and feature requirements, and read all platform notes. Meeting every minimum item means only that your computer matches the publisher’s stated baseline on paper—not that it will deliver a particular frame rate, resolution or level of stability.
Why a “2D game” label is not a compatibility guarantee
Two-dimensional art describes how a game presents its world, not how much work the computer must do. A 2D title may use simple sprites, or it may render large animated scenes, lighting effects, particle systems, physics, high-resolution assets and a demanding engine. It can also require a modern operating-system feature, a particular graphics API or a large installation.

Requirements are therefore specific to the game. Do not substitute the requirements of another 2D title, an older version, or a similarly styled game. Start with the target game’s own store listing or publisher support page, and recheck it close to purchase because developers can update requirements after release.

1. Record the game’s complete current requirements
Open the official store page or publisher support page for the exact PC edition you intend to buy. Copy the minimum and recommended sections separately. A headline such as “runs on modest PCs” is not a specification; the individual entries are.

Capture these fields
- Operating system and system type: note the required Windows release and whether the listing requires 64-bit Windows.
- Processor: record the model or processor family, not just the number of cores.
- Memory: write down the minimum and recommended RAM values.
- Graphics device: record every named GPU, along with stated video-memory, shader, graphics-feature or API conditions.
- DirectX or other graphics API: copy the required version if one is listed.
- Storage: note the required available space, not merely the download size. Updates and temporary installation files can need additional room.
- Additional conditions: read notes about online services, controllers, launchers, architecture, special peripherals, or platform-specific limitations.
Keep minimum and recommended values in different columns in your notes. A PC can clear the minimum processor requirement while missing the recommended graphics target; that is a different result from meeting both tiers.
2. Find your Windows version, processor, RAM and system type
Microsoft’s “Find information about your Windows device” instructions direct Windows 10 and Windows 11 users to Settings > System > About. The page shows the Windows edition and version, processor type, installed RAM and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Start, then Settings.
- Select System, and choose About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the edition and version.
- Under Device specifications, record the processor name, installed RAM and System type.
- Compare the system type with the game listing. If the game requires a 64-bit operating system, a 32-bit Windows installation does not satisfy that line even if the processor and RAM appear adequate.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. A Windows 10 computer can continue to operate after that date, but the support end date does not prove that a particular game will run. Use the game’s stated operating-system requirement as the compatibility test and consider the security and maintenance implications of an unsupported Windows installation separately.

3. Check available storage on the installation drive
In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage to see free space. If your PC has multiple drives, check the drive on which the game will actually be installed; free space on another drive does not satisfy the requirement.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select System > Storage.
- Identify the drive selected by your game launcher and record its available space.
- Compare that number with the game’s required available storage, leaving practical headroom for updates and temporary files.
Storage is a hard prerequisite for installation. A game that fits only after deleting unrelated files may still fail during a later update if the drive has no working room, so treat a marginal match as a warning rather than as a comfortable pass.

4. Verify the DirectX version when the listing specifies one
Some requirements pages name a DirectX version or a related graphics feature. Microsoft’s “Which version of DirectX is on your PC?” procedure is to search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab and read DirectX Version under System Information.
- Open Windows Search and type
dxdiag. - Launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Approve the prompt if Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version.
- Compare the reported version with the game’s requirement.
- Read the game’s graphics notes for separate feature requirements. A matching DirectX version alone does not establish that the GPU supports every feature the game needs.
Microsoft notes that Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version available for those operating systems. That statement does not replace the game-specific comparison: the listing may require a particular feature level, shader capability or graphics device in addition to the version number.

The processor name in About does not tell you which graphics device is available. A desktop may have a separate graphics card, while a laptop may expose both integrated and discrete GPUs. You need the actual GPU model and any listed graphics memory or feature information.
Use Windows’ device information
Open Device Manager from Windows Search and expand Display adapters. Record each adapter exactly as named. You can also use the Display tabs in dxdiag to inspect the graphics devices and driver details.
Account for laptops with two GPUs
If the laptop lists integrated and discrete graphics, determine which adapter the game is configured to use. Windows graphics settings and the laptop’s graphics-control software can assign an application to a specific GPU. Compare the game with the device that will run it, not merely the first adapter shown in a list. If the listing names a minimum amount of graphics memory or a feature level, check that condition for the selected device.

Do not infer equivalence from a name alone
A model family can contain substantially different desktop, mobile and low-power variants. When a requirement names a specific GPU, compare the exact model shown by Windows and look for reliable, model-level gameplay evidence if the publisher’s wording leaves a close call. Do not treat a vaguely similar model, a newer-sounding name or shared branding as proof of equivalence.
6. Compare every requirement, not just CPU and RAM
Create a side-by-side checklist. The PC must satisfy each applicable minimum entry; a strong processor cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or graphics feature.

Mark each row as meets, does not meet or uncertain. “Uncertain” is not a pass; resolve it before purchase.
Minimum versus recommended: what each tier tells you
Minimum requirements
Minimum specifications are the publisher’s stated baseline for launching or operating the game under its documented assumptions. They are not a universal promise of a frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or stability level. A PC that matches the minimum CPU and RAM but misses the GPU requirement has not passed the minimum comparison.
Recommended requirements
Recommended specifications describe a stronger target chosen by the publisher. They are generally the more useful reference when you want the intended resolution, preset or smoother headroom, but they remain game-specific guidance rather than a test performed on your machine.

Performance targets in the notes
Some pages attach a resolution, quality preset and frame-rate target to each tier. Compare all three together. “60 FPS” without its stated resolution and preset is incomplete, and a target on one game’s page cannot be generalized to other 2D games.
Examples of why the details matter
DiRT 4’s Windows listing
The Steam DiRT 4 listing illustrates an all-fields comparison. Its Windows minimum tier lists a 64-bit processor and operating system, a processor family, 4 GB of RAM, named graphics devices with 1 GB of VRAM and DirectX 11, plus 50 GB of available storage. Its recommended tier raises the CPU, RAM and GPU targets while retaining 50 GB of storage. Steam’s page states: “Please note for your computer to meet the minimum requirements it must match or better all elements of the listed spec.” That sentence applies to that listing; it is not a universal guarantee for every game.
The example also shows why a large amount of free disk space or sufficient RAM alone cannot establish compatibility. Every listed element—including architecture, graphics memory and DirectX—must be checked.
A Square Enix PC Steam requirements page
A Square Enix support page for a PC Steam version lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, processor, RAM, graphics, DirectX 12 and 10 GB of storage. Its minimum notes specify 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low; its recommended notes specify 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest, with an additional RAM note when an Intel GPU is used. Those targets belong to that game and configuration. They demonstrate how a requirements page can define an expected result more precisely than a bare component list, not how every 2D game will perform.

All minimum items meet or exceed
You have a paper match to the publisher’s minimum baseline. That is the strongest conclusion this checklist can make. It does not predict a particular FPS, resolution, visual preset, loading time, crash rate or performance while other applications are running.

Recommended items meet or exceed as well
You are closer to the publisher’s stronger target, especially when the page states a resolution, preset and frame rate. The result is still guidance, not an individualized benchmark; drivers, cooling, power limits, background software and the exact laptop variant can affect behavior.
Any minimum item fails
Do not buy on the assumption that the other components will make up the difference. A failed OS architecture, graphics feature, GPU memory condition or storage requirement is a specific compatibility risk that needs its own solution.
A field is unclear
Pause the purchase and resolve the ambiguity. Recheck the current official requirement page, confirm that you are reading the same platform and edition, and seek exact-model gameplay evidence from a reliable source when the publisher does not clearly identify whether your integrated GPU or laptop variant qualifies.

Close calls and conflicting requirement pages
When a store and publisher page disagree
Check the date and edition on both pages. A console requirement, an older build or a different launcher can look similar while applying to another version. Prefer the current official information for the exact PC edition, and treat an unresolved conflict as uncertainty rather than silently choosing the lower figure.
When the GPU is integrated
Integrated graphics share system resources and vary widely by processor generation and power setting. A listing that names only a broad graphics family may not answer whether a particular laptop is sufficient. Use the exact adapter model, confirm any stated memory or feature requirement, and look for evidence from the same model or a genuinely equivalent configuration.
When the requirement is barely met
A technical match leaves little room for driver changes, background applications, thermal throttling or future updates. If the page supplies recommended targets, use them to judge how much headroom you want. Do not convert a minimum match into a promise of high settings or a fixed frame rate.
A practical pre-purchase decision procedure
- Identify the exact game edition. Confirm that the page is for Windows PC and the launcher or platform you will use.
- Copy both requirement tiers. Include architecture, graphics memory, API, storage and every note.
- Measure your PC. Record Windows version and system type, CPU, RAM, free space on the installation drive, GPU model and DirectX version.
- Compare row by row. Do not skip a field because another component is stronger.
- Classify the result. Use “minimum pass,” “recommended pass,” “fails,” or “uncertain.”
- Resolve uncertainty. Recheck official documentation and seek exact-model evidence rather than relying on another game’s requirements.
- Set expectations. If you have only a minimum pass, plan for the possibility of lower settings, resolution or frame rate unless the publisher states a more specific target.
- Buy only after the unresolved risks are acceptable. A generic upgrade suggestion is not a compatibility assessment; any hardware change must address the specific failed requirement and fit the rest of the computer.
What this check cannot tell you
- It cannot guarantee a particular frame rate or frame-time consistency on your exact machine.
- It cannot prove that every graphics setting, resolution or quality preset will be usable.
- It cannot account for every driver bug, thermal limit, power setting, background process or game update.
- It cannot turn a requirement for a missing graphics feature into compatibility merely because the CPU and RAM are sufficient.
- It cannot establish online-service availability, controller comfort or other experience factors unless the listing specifies them.
The checklist is still valuable because it replaces guesswork with a reproducible comparison to the publisher’s current baseline. Use it again if the game receives a major update or if you change the drive, operating system or graphics configuration.
